3 Decades Old Cold Cases That Were Solved in 2018

3 Decades Old Cold Cases That Were Solved in 2018

3. Michelle Martinko
In December 1979 Michelle Martinko, who lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was 18 years old. She was a senior in high school and she was a member of her school's choir. About two weeks before Christmas the choir records some Christmas songs for a local television show. The show was to air on the morning of December 20th, and then it would replay that evening. The night before the show aired the choir had a banquet at a hotel in Cedar Rapids. After the banquet Michelle called her parents and told them she was going to the West Dale mall to buy a new winter coat.

The mall had just opened months earlier in October. At around 8 p.m. friends of Michelle saw her at the mall. But sadly, she never arrived home. At 2:00 a.m. her worried parents called the police and told them that she hadn't come home. Two hours later her car was found in the parking lot of the mall. Michelle's dead body was inside the car. She had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and the face. Her hands were marked with defensive wounds. She was fully clothed and she had not been sexually assaulted. The Medical Examiner thought that she had died around nine o'clock the night before.

The television station was unaware that Michelle had been killed and on the morning that she was found dead they aired the footage of her and the rest of the choir singing. In the early days of the investigation the police didn't have much in the way of evidence. It wasn't long before the case went cold. The first significant suspect emerged a year after the murder.

On June 16th, 1980 18 year-old Susan Belotte clocked out of her job in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was reported missing when she didn't come home. A few days later another young woman was reported missing from Las Vegas. 20 year old Cheryl Daniels vanished while she was on a date. Her date had run into a store to buy some beer and when he got back to the car Cheryl was missing. Six months later, in the summer 1980, Cheryl's body was found in the desert near St. George, Utah. She had been sexually assaulted and shot in the head. Near the body the police found a wallet. Inside the wallet was a credit card that belonged to 30 year old Stephen Morin.

The police also found an address written on a piece of paper in the wallet. The police went to the address and found out that a woman was living there. She was a co-worker of Susan Belotte who was still missing. The woman said that Morin have been stalking her. When the police went to arrest Morin he was gone. It turned out that Morin had fled the state.

On November 6, 1981, Morin kidnapped 23 year old Sheila Warren in Golden, Colorado. He took her to a motel room and he stabbed her to death. A month later Morin kidnapped 21 year old Janna Bruce from a hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas. He strangled her to death and dumped her body in a culvert. Eight days later Morin was trying to steal a car outside of a restaurant in San Antonio, Texas.

The owner of the car, 21 year old Carrie Marie Scott, who was a waitress at the restaurant came out of the restaurant and found Morin in trying to steal it. She confronted him and he shot her to death. He fled from the scene and the police tracked him down to a motel. In his motel room, they found a woman he had kidnapped days before but Morin had slipped out a window and he was gone. He had gone to a shopping center and kidnapped Margaret Palm. For 10 hours Morin drove around with Margaret in the vehicle.

During those 10 hours, they listened to some audio cassettes that Margaret had that were recordings of an evangelist preacher. She'd also read from her journal that had bible quotes in it. Morin then decided to let Margaret go. He traded his bullets for her journal that contained the bible quotes. Morin went to a bus station and he boarded a bus heading to Austin. The police were alerted and they rushed to the bus station. Morin was arrested without incident. He was charged with the murder of Carrie Marie Scott. Morin said that Margaret had converted him to Christianity during the time that he held her captive.

Because of his newfound religious faith, he pleaded guilty to capital murder and he was sentenced to death. He was only the second person to plead guilty to capital murder in the history of Texas. Stephen Morin was also convicted of the murders of Janna Bruce and Sheila Warren. He received a death sentence for both of those convictions. He was never charged with the murders of the two Las Vegas women, Susan Belotte and Cheryl Daniels. The police believe that Morin could have committed anywhere between 30 and 50 murders. This included the murder of Michelle Martinko. Warren was a drifter who travelled around the country. He was also heavily addicted to cocaine. The police asked him about other murders he may have committed but his answers were always vague. Investigators thought he did too many drugs and he couldn't remember most of the crimes he committed.

On death row Morin led a Bible study group and even got a degree in biblical teachings. He refused to appeal his conviction and his death sentence. Just after midnight on December 11th, 1985, Morin was brought into the execution chamber in Huntsville, Texas. Because of Morin's history of drug abuse it took 40 minutes to find a vein that they could insert a needle into. They finally found the vein and he was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. The police in Cedar Rapids thought was possible that Morin killed Michelle Martinko but they couldn't prove anything, so once again her case went cold. The police have blood samples that were found on Michelle's coat in the gearshift of her car

In 2006 they had the blood tested and discovered that the blood didn't belong to Michelle. Instead it belonged to a man. Presumably during the murder the killer was injured and he left his blood in the car. In 2018 Parabon NanoLabs did a reverse genealogy search on the  DNA. Parabon NanoLabs is a DNA phenotyping company that is responsible for helping identify the Golden State killer as Joseph James DeAngelo. Parabon NanoLabs narrowed down the suspects and the police began to follow 64 year old Jerry Lynn Burns who lives in a small town of Manchester, Iowa, which is about 50 miles north the Cedar Rapids. He had gone to high school in Manchester and he had lived there most of his adult life. At the time of Michelle's murder he was 25 years old. The police were able to pick up an item that he discarded that had his DNA on it. It was compared to the DNA found in Michelle's car and it was a match.

On December 19, 2018, 39 years to the day of Michelle's murder, Jerry Burns was arrested and he was charged with first degree murder. At the time of his arrest Jerry owned a powder coating company in Manchester. He also used to work at John Deere and he had co-owned a truck stop that was just outside of town. Jerry was well-known in Manchester, which has a population of about 5,000 people. Everyone thought he was upbeat and friendly. Gerry has one son and two daughters. His family was completely shocked by his arrest. Jerry didn't have a criminal record. Had he not been found through reverse genealogy the police would've never had a reason to suspect that he stabbed Michelle to death. If there was a motive for the murder the police haven't made that public. After Jerry was arrested people started to look at tragedies in his life in a new light. Jerry married his wife Patricia in 1975, four years before Michelle's murder.

In June 2008 at the age of 55 Patricia died. Her death was ruled a suicide. Jerry was questioned by the police after her death, but the police were confident that it was a suicide. Then on December 19, 2013, 34 years to the day of Michelle's murder, Jerry's cousin, 55 year old Brian Burns, went missing. Brian was last seen in his home in Manchester. He has never been found. The police say that Jerry is not a suspect in the death of his wife or the disappearance of his cousin. Jerry Burns will most likely go to trial for the murder of Michelle Martinko in 2019.

2. Michella Welch and Jennifer Bastian
In the spring of 1986 Michella Welch was 12 years old and she lived with her family in Tacoma, Washington. She was a bright and talented girl who played the piano and the violin. On March 26, 1986, Michella took her two younger sisters to Puget Park, which wasn't far from their home. Not long after noon Michella rode her bike home and picked up lunch for her and her sisters. She then rode her bike back to the park. While she was gone her sisters needed to use the washroom so they left the park and went to a nearby business. When they returned to the park at about one o'clock they found Michella's bike and their sandwiches on a table but Michella was nowhere to be seen. They looked around the park for her, but they couldn't find her.

So they went home and told their mother that they couldn't find her. Her mother called the police. Later that night Michella's body was found by a search dog in a gulch not far from the park. She had been sexually assaulted, beaten and her throat had been cut. Five months later 13 year-old Jennifer Bastian, who also lives in Tacoma, was training for a bike tour. On August 4th, she left her family's home on her bike and she rode 30 blocks to Point Defiance Park. When she didn't return home later that day her family alerted the police and a massive search was launched. Over three weeks later, her body was found hidden in a wooded area near a trail that is commonly used by joggers. Her bike was lying a few feet from her body. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.

The police and most people who heard about the murders assumed that they were committed by the same man. Both victims were young girls who were killed after they rode their bike to a park. At first the police had an array of suspects. One suspect was a man named David Fisher. In 1970 Fisher had sexually assaulted and beat to death 13 year old Laura Burbank in Tacoma. He was arrested but the case against him was circumstantial. He ended up pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was sent to a minimum-security prison to serve his sentence. The prison didn't have any walls or fences.

In September 1974 Fisher walked away from the prison and no one noticed for hours. At the time of Michella and Jennifer's murders Fisher was still on the lam and the police thought it was possible that he was back in the Tacoma area. Another suspect emerged in May 1986, about two months after Michella was killed and three months before Jennifer was murdered. A man named Robert Washburn had called the police and told them that on the day that Michella was killed he was in the same park jogging. He told them as he was jogging he saw a man who looked like the sketch of the suspect. He said the man was also jogging. The police interviewed Washburn after Jennifer was killed and he said on the day that she  went missing he just happened to be in that park jogging as well.

Since Washburn was in both parks on the days that both girls were killed the police thought he could have been the killer but they had no evidence to prove it so he wasn't charged. For years the cases sat cold. Then in December 1989 the television show Unsolved Mysteries did a story about one of the suspects, David Fisher, who disappeared in 1974 after he escaped from prison. After the show aired a tip came in that Fisher was living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He had been working as a door-to-door salesman and he was married with three daughters. He was able to prove that he wasn't in Tacoma when the girls were killed. There was no progress on the cases for 17 years.

Then in 2016 the police compared the DNA from Michella's murder to the DNA from Jennifer's murder. It turned out that there was two different killers. The DNA was inputted into the FBI's combined DNA index system, which is better known by its acronym CODIS, but no match to either set of DNA was found. The police tracked down Robert Washburn who had called the police after Michella's murder and admitted to being in both parks on the same days as the murders. In early 2018 he was living in, Eureka, Illinois. The police asked for a sample of his DNA and he voluntarily gave them a sample. It was a match to the DNA from Jennifer's murder. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder but the police still didn't know who killed Michella Welch.

Then Parabon NanoLabs became more involved in the case. They inputted Michella's killer's DNA into a public genealogy database and they discovered that the DNA belonged to one of two brothers who lived in Tacoma. Detectives then started to follow both of the brothers. One day in June 2018 detectives followed one of the brothers, 66 year old Gary Hartman, into a restaurant and they saw that he used a napkin to wipe his mouth. The police collected the napkin and they pulled a DNA sample from it. It was then compared to the DNA of Michella's killer. It was a match.

On June 20, 2018 Hartman was arrested and he was charged with first-degree murder. Hartman lived in the area where Michella was killed, but he wasn't a person of interest or a suspect. The police had no idea who he was until he was found through reverse genealogy. Hartman was a married father of two. He was a registered nurse and he worked at the Western State Hospital in Lakewood, Washington. His job was to find community placements for people leaving the State Hospital. He did not have a criminal record and the news of his arrest shocked everyone who knew him. Both Washburn and Hartman are expected to face trial in 2019. A detective who worked on Michella's case had a message for any killer who left his or her DNA at a crime scene. He said that they should turn themselves in because with the help of reverse genealogy it's only a matter of time before they will be arrested.

1. Arlis Perry
Arlis Dyckema was born in North Dakota on February 22, 1955 A guiding force in her life from a young age was her evangelical Christian faith. She attended high school in Bismarck, North Dakota where she was an active member of several Christian groups. In one of these groups she met Bruce Perry who was in the same grade as her. Both Arlis and Bruce graduated from high school in 1973. Arlis went to Community College in Bismarck and Bruce moved to Stanford, California to study pre-med at Stanford University. Bruce proposed to Arlis during their first year apart and Arlis said yes. They got married on August 17, 1974 and Arlis took Bruce's his last name.

After their honeymoon Arlis moved to Stanford to live with Bruce while he continued his studies. After relocating Arlis got a job as a receptionist at a law firm. Life as a newlywed in the new city far from her friends and family was tough on Arlis at times. When life became stressful she turned to her faith to help get her through. On September 17, 1974 the couple had been married for exactly eight weeks Late that night Arlis decided to walk to campus to mail a letter and Bruce joined her. As they walked through the campus they got into a fight over something minor. One of their car's tires was slowly leaking air and they argued over who was responsible for filling it with air.

Arlis was annoyed and she told Bruce that she was going to pray alone at the Stanford Memorial Church, which is on campus. Arlis entered the church at 11:50 and joined several other people who were praying. Everyone but Arlis left the church before midnight. As they walked out a few people saw a young man with a medium build and light brown hair walk towards the church. At 12:10 a security guard named Stephen Crawford said he entered the rear of the church and yelled out that he was locking up for the night. Crawford said he didn't see anyone and the church was quiet so he locked all the doors to the church.

At 12:15 Bruce went to the church to check on Arlis because she had not returned home. When he got to the church he found the doors locked so he went back to the residence to await her return. At 2:00 a.m. Arlis still hadn't returned home so Bruce went back to the church and once again, he found the doors locked. By 3:00 a.m. Bruce still had not heard from nor seen his wife and he became worried. He called the campus police and reported her missing. An officer went to the church and found the doors locked so he left. At 5:40 a.m Stephen Crawford, the same security guard who locked the doors of the church at midnight, started to unlock the church's doors. When he got to a side door he noticed something unusual. The door had been forced open from the inside.

Crawford entered into the church and under one of the pews he found the dead body of 19 year old Arlis Perry. He left the church and called the police. When the police arrived they found Arlis lying face-up. She was naked from the waist down and her jeans were lying on top of her. Her right hand was palm down and her left hand was under her body in the waist area. She had been sexually violated with a 24 inch beeswax candle. Another 24 inch candle have been shoved between her breasts. The shove was so forceful that it ripped her bra straps. There were deep bruises on her neck. The bruises looked like they were made by the necklace that she was wearing. It was initially thought that Arlis had been strangled to death but the autopsy revealed an entirely different cause of death. She had been stabbed at the base of the skull at a 45 degree angle with a five and a half inch ice pick.

The metal pick was still lodged in her head. The handle of the ice pick had broken off and the killer took it with him. It's not believed that the killer raped Arlis but the police did find a semen stain on a kneeling pillow that was placed beside her body. On one of the candles that was used to violate Arlis the police found a palm print which was the best evidence they had at the time. The first suspect was Arlis's husband Bruce. His palm print was compared to the palm print that was found on the candle. He was not a match. Bruce was given a polygraph exam and he passed so he was cleared as a suspect. The next suspect was Stephen Crawford the security guard who locked up the church then found Arlis's body.

Just like Bruce his palm print didn't match the palm print left on the candle. The police asked Crawford to take a polygraph exam and he refused. But since his palm print didn't match the palm print left on the candle the police had to look at other suspects. One of those suspects was serial killer Ted Bundy but the police were able to confirm he wasn't in the area at the time of the murder, so he was eliminated as a suspect as well. Unfortunately after ruling out those suspects the police had no idea who killed Arlis.

Since the gruesome murder happened in a church there was speculation that the killing was satanic or occult in nature. But police were clear from the early days of the investigation that the crime had no occult or satanic overtones. One detective said it just happened to occur in a church. Another investigator said that the crime seemed like the work of a sexual psychopath instead of the work of satanists. But this didn't stop rumors or conspiracy theories that was a satanic or occult murder. The rumors were somewhat bolstered in 1979. David Berkowitz, who was also known as the Son of Sam killer and the 44 caliber killer, sent a package to investigators in North Dakota.

At the time Berkowitz was sitting in prison in New York for the murders of six people. In the package was a book The Anatomy of Witchcraft by Peter Haining. In the margins of one page Berkowitz wrote "Arlis Perry hunted stalked and slain followed to California Call the Santa Clara Sheriff's Office California, please ask the Sheriff's what happened to Arlis Perry." After getting the book a detective interviewed Berkowitz about Arlis's murder. The interview didn't lead to any arrests. In1987 Maury Terry, a reporter with the tabloid the New York Post, published a book called The Ultimate Evil. In the controversial book Terry asserts that Arlis was killed on the orders of a satanic cult that was based in Bismarck, North Dakota. He called the founder of the called Manson  2. Terry said that Manson 2 was a former member of the Manson Family.

Terry then goes on to claim that Arlis was killed by a man named Bruce Perry. Not Arlis's husband but a different man named Bruce Perry. After the book was published the police still do not think that Arlis's murder was related to satanism or the occult. For years, no progress was made on Arlis's case. When DNA testing became more prevalent the Stanford police asked Bruce for his DNA. Bruce had gone on to become a doctor. He voluntarily gave the police a sample of his DNA. The police also picked up an object that had Stephen Crawford's DNA on it. However, it wouldn't be until 2018 that DNA technology had advanced enough that a profile from the DNA found at the crime scene could be developed. When they got killer's DNA profile they compared it to Bruce's DNA and Crawford's DNA. BrucePerry's DNA did not match. Stephen Crawford's DNA was a match.

In June 2018, weeks before his DNA was linked to the crime scene Detectives had to interview Crawford and he knew he was a person of interest. On the morning of June 28th, 2018 the police pounded on the door of Crawford's apartment and they identified themselves. They said they had a warrant to search his apartment. He didn't answer the door so the officers entered the apartment. When they got inside, they saw Crawford sitting on his bed. He was holding a gun. He was in a small room so the officers backed their way out of the apartment. A few minutes later they heard the distinctive sound of a gunshot. Crawford, who was 72, had shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police searched his apartment and they found a book jacket of Terry Maury's book The Ultimate Evil, which discusses Arlis's murder. They also found a suicide note that was dated two years earlier. He did not address the murder directly in the note. Friends and family of Crawford said that he had developed a hatred of Stanford. Crawford had worked as a police officer at Stanford. He joined the force in 1971. But the year after he joined the force the Chief of Police implemented new qualifications for officers to carry guns. A lot of the officers were told to reapply for their jobs. About three-quarters of the people that reapplied were not hired back on. This included Crawford.

The people who weren't rehired were offered jobs as security guards and Crawford took the position. The situation made Crawford bitter. He continued to work at Stanford until 1976, about two years after Arlis's murder. During that time Crawford stole artifacts, bronze statues and rare books from the campus. In 1992, he was arrested in connection with the thefts. He pleaded no contest to the charges and he was given a six-month suspended sentence. The police suspect that Crawford killed Arlis as a way to lash out against Stanford. There is also speculation that Crawford committed other murders on and around the Stanford campus.

At around 1:00 a.m. on September 11, 1973, about 13 months before Arlis was killed, 20 year-old physics student David Levine left the Stanford Physics Department and started to walk to his dorm. Two hours later a jogger discovered his body. He had been stabbed 13 times, a dozen times in the back and once in the chest. Then about six months later, and seven months before Arlis was killed, there was another murder. On the evening of March 24, 1974, 21 year-old Janet Ann Taylor was on the Stanford campus visiting friends.

Janet was the daughter the former director of athletics at Stanford Chuck Taylor. She was last seen at an intersection on campus hitchhiking towards home. Her dead body was found the next morning by a milk truck driver about three miles from the campus. Her body was in a ditch on the property that was owned by Stanford University. She was fully clothed but she was missing her raincoat, her belt and her shoes. Those were all found scattered along the road where her body was found. The cause of death was strangulation. The police department said they are looking to see if Stephen Crawford was involved in these murders as well. But for now, they are happy that after 44 years they can close the case on the murder of Arlis Perry.

Top 10 Scary Californian Urban Legends

10. Alcatraz Island Of Evil
Before Alcatraz was even a high-security prison, Miwok tribes of California were NOT about that rock. They thought that the sandstone rock that protrudes from the middle of San Francisco Bay was inhabited by evil spirits. When the prison was built on the rock, it became one of the most notorious high-security prisons of all time. It is presumed that all who tried to escape the jail were killed – if they fall into the rocky water didn’t kill you, the sharks that infested the water might. The Prison was infamous for the criminals it housed, their somewhat inhumane confinement and the murders that happened with the walls of the jail.

Alcatraz stopped functioning as a prison in 1963, but the memories of the buildings brutal era live on. In 1946, three men were killed in a bloody standoff in Block C – these days, national park employees believe C block to be haunted. Security hears clanging and dissonant screams at night and is reportedly haunted by a trouble-making ghost called Butcher, a hitman killed by another prisoner. The most haunted place in the building, however, is allegedly cell 14-D, a solitary confinement hole. The hole is said to turn men mad…and criminally insane is a lot worse than simply being a criminal. It seems Alcatraz was always an island of evil spirits, and by building a jail there, the United States government just added a few more to the mix, whilst damning others to expire there.

9. The Billiwhack Monster
Ahhh the legend of the Billiwhack Monster. So this Californian legend goes all the way back to the 1940s but is still going strong today. The old Billywhack Dairy building is situated in Santa Paula in Ventura County. The building was indeed an old dairy – and was run by August Rubel, a German national living in the united states. Rumour had it at the time that Rubel had a secret lab under the dairy where he was working with the government to create a super soldier for warfare. In 1943, he had to go back to Germany, which was tricky as he was working for the allies and war had already broken out. It seems Rubel was killed by a German land mine and was unable to return to the Billywhack dairy.

Some years later, a strange creature was reported in the area around the now abandoned dairy. Most of the reports came from students at Santa Paula High School who called the police to tell them their cars were being hit with rocks thrown by a large looking animal. Some students even reported being set upon by a large white humanoid looking creature with goat-like horns and razor-sharp claws. It seems something fitting that description terrorized hikers nearby in 1964. It wasn’t just the monster causing trouble either – locals were getting frustrated with the teams of vigilantes turning up to try and hunt the beast!

8. California’s Skinwalkers In Navajo Culture
A lot of people believe in skinwalkers. Skinwalkers are said to be witches who ascended to their superhuman powers by sacrificing – by murdering – a close family member. These skinwalkers can then take the form of an animal of there choosing, although they usually appear as wolves, owls, coyote’s, foxes and crows. These witches are said to be extremely dangerous and you do not want to encounter one for fear of invoking their wrath. These skinwalkers are said to be most commonly found stalking desserts in California, like Death Valley, the Mojave National Preserve, and Joshua Tree. When Nick Redfern visited Joshua Tree in August 2010 for a VH1 Documentary, he said he came across a woman who helped save injured wolves and other animals in the area but was deathly terrified of meeting a skinwalker. So much so, she wouldn’t even utter the S word.

7. Turnbull Canyon
Turnbull Canyon was dubbed the dark place by local native tribes, and that nickname has more to it than simply referring to the lack of light. Back then, the native tribes would refuse to set foot there. The place became even darker when Spanish invaders forced natives into the Canyon, killing those that fell out of line. Since then, legend says that every Native American killed in the canyon still haunts it today – watching passers-by and waiting for the sun to rise. Many explorers feel watched when they venture into the canyon. Not only is the canyon haunted by the spirits of the wronged natives, but it is also said to be a hotbed for occult activity, with reports of black-robed beings making effigies in the remote area. A string of disappearances around the nearby Puente Hills has been put down to satanic activity in the canyon. To make this a triple whammy of creepy – there is also an abandoned mental asylum in the canyon.

6. Stow Lake
The White Lady is said to be one of the ghosts of San Francisco, and this particular lost soul is said to haunt the Stow Lake area of the city. Few are brave to walk by Stow Lake at night, although some zealous youths find it funny to turn amateur ghost hunter by provoking the spirit. The story goes that once upon a time, a woman was out walking her baby in a stroller. She became tired and sat down on a bench next to the lake when another lady joined her and they had a brief chat. While the women chatted, it is said that the stroller rolled away unnoticed, either because the breaks malfunctioned, they weren’t put on properly or someone abducted the child.

The mother became distressed and started frantically wandering the area asking if anyone had seen her child. Eventually, she thought the baby must have rolled into the lake and so she got into the water to look for her. After that, neither mother or child was seen again and it is presumed the woman drowned. Now, at night, her ghostly apparition still stalks the area looking for her child. Some versions of the urban legend even say you can summon the ghost yourself. Allegedly, if you say White lady, white lady, I have your baby” three times, the lady will appear. She’ll ask you, “Have you seen my baby?” If you say yes, she’ll haunt you and if you say no, she’ll kill you.

5. The Angel of Bodie
Bodie is one of many Californian Ghosts towns. As we know, California was at the forefront of the gold rush, but it was also heavy on the silver mining. Bodie had 10 thousand residents in 1859 and was thriving in 1894 when little Evelyn Myers was born. Growing up around a mine has its dangers, but as families settled to make their fortunes, this was the life many children in the South West of the United States came to know. Little Evelyn was nearly four years old when she tragically lost her life. Her downfall was her playful curiosity; she likes to follow the miners to work and she would often land herself in trouble with her parents.

One day, she followed a miner to work and he sent her back home, but she was sneaky and snuck back to watch him work. Sadly, he didn’t know she was behind him when he swung his pickaxe back and crushed her skull. A monument was erected in her honor and it is said that her ghost now haunts the deserted town. She can be heard laughing and giggling as she skips gleefully around her home.

4. The Charred Man Of Creek Road
I don’t like a ghost at the best of times, but a charred ghost with vacant eye sockets? No THANKS. The legend of the charred man has been told around Ojai campfires for decades. The charred man is said to stalk creek road and the Camp Comfort County Park. Many have reported seeing the ghostly apparition of a man on fire with blacked burned skin and hollow eye sockets. The charred man has most commonly been spotted in the Creek Road Bridge – when a car passes the bridge, he will emerge and glare at the passengers. Not only that – he comes with the stench of burning flesh, which is something I have luckily never had to experience, but I can only imagine is awful. It is said that the man leaves an imprint of ash on cars that get too close to him.

3. The Monster of Elizabeth Lake
While Elizabeth Lake in the Antelope Valley may look like heaven, it actually has a hellish legend attached to it. Los Angeles County’s largest natural lake could contain a nasty beast. Legend has it that the lake was created by the devil himself and he placed one of his own pets inside it. If you swim deep enough, you may find a secret passage that leads to the underworld. The Lake Monster uses this passage to move between earth and the netherworld. The lake was originally referred to by Spanish Settlers as La Laguna De Diablo – the lake of the devil because they were convinced of the lurking monster. In the late 1800s, a group of men claimed to have witnessed the ascension of a vast monster with bat wings coming from the lake.

2. The Fresno Nightcrawler
Ah, the legend of the Fresno Nightcrawler! Rumors of strange Cryptids walking around at night in Fresno California began surfacing in the late nineties and early 2000s. There were only a handful of eyewitnesses and reports were shaky until some strange footage emerged in 2008. CCTV video seemed to show a strange biped walking down a road. By biped…I mean, that was pretty much it. The figure was all legs, walking down the street like dexterous tweezers….Or, I guess looking a bit like a possessed pair of trousers. The footage is grainy but definitely strange. Watch for yourself. Well, many people think that the strange nightcrawler is some kind of Fresno monster, but many more think it is an alien! Similar Cryptids have been spotted in Yosemite and in Poland. What is this figure? A puppet? An Alien? An undiscovered creature? A Ghost? Is the Fresno Nightcrawler real, whatever it may be, or is this a bizarre hoax?

1. The Dark Watchers of Santa Lucia
The Dark Watchers are a legend in Santa Lucia, California and were known by Spanish Settlers as Los Vigilantes Oscuro. The watchers are regularly described as tall, sometimes giant sized featureless dark silhouettes often adorned with brimmed hats or walking sticks. They have been frequently spotted in the Santa Lucia Mountains watching passers-by. The figures are mainly spotted around twilight and dawn. No one has ever seen one up close, and it is said that if a person does ever come close to one, they will disappear. They have been regularly spotted by walkers, and many believe that if they stay on the path they are on and keep going about their business, the watchers won’t bother them.

Writer John Steinbeck’s son, Thomas, believed he saw the watchers growing up. In the 1960s, a high school principal reported seeing a tall man with a hat watching him as he led a group hike. When he called out, the figure disappeared. Scientists offer a number of different  explanations for the sightings with some saying they could be Brocken specters, which happen in certain atmospheric conditions when the sun is at a particular angle. Others say they could be fatigue based hallucinations.

Top 10 Scary Mexican Urban Legends Part 2

Mexico is world famous for its food and culture but we've all heard the scary stories too. After all, there is a Mexican holiday literally called The Day of The Dead. People there know the stories, I've seen many of you in the comments who are from Mexico asking for me to share more because they're so good. I agree and that's why we are back. My name is Danny Burke and this is the Top 10 Scary Mexican Urban Legends - Part 2.

1. La Llorona
The story goes like this. Once upon a time, in a Mexican village, there lived a young woman called Maria. Her family was poor but she was known for her beauty. One day, a rich nobleman was travelling through her village but stopped in his tracks when he saw Maria. He was so charmed by her beauty that he proposed to her immediately proposed to her. She accepted. The wedding was planned - even though the nobleman Father was disappointed his son was marrying into poverty. Maria and her new husband built a house in the village and eventually, she gave birth to twin boys. Her husband was always travelling but returned when he could until one day, he never came home.

One day, as Maria and her boys were walking by a river, she saw a familiar carriage with a younger, beautiful woman next to her husband. Maria flew into a jealous rage. She was so angry at seeing her husband cheating on her that she picked up her two boys and flung them into the river. By the time she came around, their bodies were floating in the river, face down. She then jumped in, hoping to also drown and be with her kids. Now, they say her soul is attached to the land, unable to pass on because of her grief and the murder of her two little boys. People say if you hear her cries, then misfortune or even death is around the corner. If you are a child, you must be extra careful, she is always attracted to children, hoping that they are hers. She will try and drown them to be with her children. Kids must never walk alone by the river unless they too want to meet the same fate.

9. El Sombreron
In some parts of Mexico, people swear this mysterious creature exists. Its name roughly translates to -the goblin-… he goes around wearing a huge dark hat and dresses entirely in black except for his ornamental boots and belt. He preys on the young, especially girls. El Sombrero has an obsession with braiding. He often braids the manes of tails and horses or if there are none about, he braids the hair of dogs. If people see animals with their hair braided like this, they know the Goblin is nearby. When he cant find the animals, he follows  young women with large eyes and long hair. He arrives in town with a pack of mules and when he finds a woman he likes, he ties his mules up and serenades her with a silver guitar.

After enchanting her back to his home, he's said to serve them dirt for dinner which makes them unable to sleep. The legend goes that a young girl named Susana was admiring the moon and stars from her balcony one night when she was approached and serenaded by the Goblin with the big hat. Her parents were worried and upset by her daughter being out so late and so they forced her to come inside. The Goblin returned every night, making it impossible for her to sleep. When her parents tried to feed her, shed always find dirt in her food. Her parents eventually cut the girls hair and had it blessed by a priest. Suddenly, the El Sombreron had no interest in her and the visits stopped. He moved on to search for his next victim, and they say he continues his journey even today.

8. The Vanishing Hitchhiker
This is an old story burned into the memoryn of many Mexicans. One night in November many years ago, a taxi driver called Pedro Ramirez was heading for the town of Cazones. It was a warm night but every now and again, Pedro felt a snap of cold. Then, on the dark road, a girl stopped him to ask for help. She said that bad people wanted to harm her and so they sped away from the area together. She said her name was Martha and that her parents were the owners of the ranch where he picked her up. He took her to Cazones and left her at the house she wanted to go to. Martha was very grateful and invited him in to spend the day with her for some time.

Pedro took her up on this offer and returned a few days later. He knocked on the door of the house, an elderly woman came to the door. He asked for Martha and explained how they met. The old woman smiled and said that Martha was her daughter who had been assassinated 10 years before by drug addicts outside of her husband's ranch. The woman was smiling because this wasn't the first time Martha's ghost had done this. Still, Pedro didn't believe her. She invited him in and there in the living room was an old photo of Martha, looking just like she had the other night. Many people get creeped out by the story but are also glad to know who the girl is by the side of the road to Calzones.

7. Santa Paula Cemetery
This is said to be a very haunted cemetery near the city of Guadalajara. The story dates back to 1882 and goes like this. One night, a young couple put their 9-year-old son Ignacio to bed. His family nickname was -Nachito-. Nachito slept with the light on as he was afraid of the dark. He had two lit torches outside of his bedroom window and slept with the windows open. This night, a storm hit and blew out the torches. The next morning, his Mother entered the room to find it was icy cold. She rushed to Nachito but found him dead - he had died from a heart attack due to his pathological fear of the dark. However, a rumor spread that Nachitos heart had exploded inside his chest and that his death was actually a curse or the work of demons. He was laid to rest in the cemetery and the strangeness that began with his death did not end quickly.

The next morning, his coffin was found lying on the ground next to his grave. The parents and locals were shocked and had it reburied but the next morning, the same thing happened. It continued like this for 9 straight days. His parents began to think that the boy was so afraid of the dark - he didn't want to be kept in the ground away from light, even in death. So, they created a stone coffin that stood on pillars above the ground, so that his tomb could always see sunlight. Ever since then, people reported hearing and seeing a boy that matches Nachitos description, wandering around at night. Others have seen mysterious balloons hovering above the gravestones as if carried by a small child. Many who have heard this story actually go to visit Nachitos grave. Some hope they won't see signs of him at night, but reports of his sightings continue to this day.

6. Cadejo
This is a supernatural character from southern Mexican folklore. There are two types of this creature, the white and black Cadejo. They are dog-like creatures. The white one is said to be good, accompanying people home late at night. The black Cadejo is feared as an evil spirit. It does exactly the opposite, it tries to kill people walking alone at night. If the person survives the attack, its because they are an idiot - apparently. Quite often, a person is saved from the attack by the white Cadejo, the two will battle it out until the good Cadejo wins.

Its a sight to behold - while they are dog-like creatures, they are often described as being much bigger than dogs. Some reports say they can be as big as cows. They have burning red eyes and goats hooves. They lurk in graveyards and dark alleys, waiting for their victim to pass by. They have a distinct smell of concentrated urine and burning sulfur. People say they move in a demonic nature with short jerky movements. One thing to remember about the Cadejo is that its gaze can freeze you in place, at which point you can be easily attacked by the evil Cadejo.

5. La Mala Hora
This name translates to the Evil Hour or the Evil One, either is a fitting description for this being. In parts of Mexico, it is believed to be a wicked spirit or evil demon that wanders country roads after midnight, waiting to attack anyone who walks alone. It waits at crossroads, hoping for a lost traveler to pass by. For the people who have seen it, they fear the Evil One more than the devil. It first appears as a large, black lump, swirling through the night air and changing shape. It shapeshifts quickly, getting bigger or smaller at will. People say it resembles a ghostly black shroud or a large black cotton ball. Nobody wants to see it though, for to do so will drive a person mad. The demon will try to hypnotize and paralyze people before attacking them. When it does, it rushes forward as a thick black smog, enveloping and suffocating them. The next morning, locals will find them dead at the crossroads, and they know who is to blame.

4. The Princess of Bufa
This story comes from the Cerro de la Bufa, an area of forested hills and rocky cliffs on the southeast side of Guanajuato. There, locals say an enchanted princess lives at the peak of the mountain. They say that on Holy Thursdays, for centuries, she will emerge from the mountaintop to call for a handsome and valiant man to rescue her by carrying her down to the altar in the nearby town. Once there, she will become human and the town will be restored to its former glory as a booming mining town.

However, as with many similar stories, there is always a catch. They say the man who rescues the princess must not be so stunned by her beauty that he cannot complete the journey. He must carry her calmly in his arms all the way. He cannot look back or lose his step, especially when he hears strange noises behind him. If he does turn around or stumble, the princess will turn into a vicious, hideous serpent and will devour him whole. People say this happens every year because the town has still not met its former glory. Will the snake princess claim victims like this forever?

3. Mannequin
In a store window in the city of Chihuahua, there stands a bridal mannequin that has become famous in the paranormal community. Its been there since 1930 and at first glance, it doesn't look so creepy - but wait till you hear this. Soon after it was placed there, locals noticed the mannequin bore an uncanny resemblance to daughter of the woman who owned the store - Pascuala Esparza. A rumour spread that this mannequin was actually the embalmed body of the daughter who had recently died on her wedding day after being bitten by a black widow spider.

Of course, the mother denied all of this but the legend took hold - people were convinced it was the body of the daughter - the resemblance and how lifelike it looked were just too perfect. Sonia Burciaga was a woman who worked in the store. She had to change the outfit twice a week and was quoted as saying -Every time I go near Pascualita my hands break out in a swear. Her hands are very realistic and she even has varicose veins on her legs. I believe she's a real person- … Well, I thought it sounded ridiculous until I saw the close up of her hands, now I'm not sure. I'm only sure that I'm never going anywhere near her.

2. The Island of Dolls
If you head just south of Mexico City, you can find an island that attracts tourists from all over the world. The whole thing is covered in creepy dolls of every shape and size. There is a famous story as to why. Its said that a girl was found drowned in mysterious circumstances many years ago on the island. Her body was found by a man called Don Julian Santana Barrera. Shortly after, he saw a floating doll nearby. He hung it to a tree as a sign of respect and as a way of helping her into the next life.

However, it didn't seem to work. Don Julian was apparently haunted by the spirit of the girl. He began hanging more dolls in an attempt to please her restless spirit. Then, he realised what he had done - and it was already far too late. He believed the dolls themselves were now possessed by the spirits of dead girls from all over the world. His friends say he went mad - as if driven by an unseen force to continue what he started. After 50 years of doll hanging, Don Julian was found dead, drowned in the same area where the girl died. Now, locals believe his spirit has joined the others on the island. People visit to honour him, the girl, and the spirits of the others. However, most people don't stay long, and almost nobody would spend a night on the Island of Dolls.

1. The Seventh Son
This story comes from a remote area near Toledo. In the 19th century, there was a boy who lived in a village. His name was Federico. He was the 7th son in his family. In fact, his Father was also the 7th son in his family. Locals believed that because of this, he was endowed with dark occult powers. They say he had second sight and the ability to predict the future. Even more, he had a natural gift for healing, curing anyone of their ailment with just a touch of his hand. Although he was kind, quiet and shy - the other kids hated him - because they feared him.

Overall, the village wanted nothing to do with him. And so, one night, the village elders held a meeting to discuss what should be done about him. They voted to kill him and then destroy his body - that was said to be the only way the village could be kept same from the dark forces he channeled. They led him to an abandoned shack in the woods. When his back was turned, they pounced on him and bound him up. In a satanic ritual, they stripped him, hung him from the roof and then lowered him into a vat of boiling oil. It didn't stop there though. He was still alive and screaming in pain and so they gouged out his eyes and hacked his body to bits. The parts were put in a wooden barrel and dumped in the river. With that, they were satisfied.

The next day some villagers went to visit one of the elders. They knocked on his door but got no reply. As soon as they entered - they stopped - there was the elder, dead on the floor. His eyeballs were on his chest, his head had been crushed beyond all recognition. His eyes and feet had also been chopped. On the ground in front, there was a message written in blood -Innocent blood has been split. Now the guilty must die- … after that day, all the elders who were responsible for the boy's death began to die one by one - their bodies always found in hideous ways. When the last one died, there was another message written in blood, it read -Now I have been avenged, the guilty have paid their debt-Okkayyy.

Top 10 Scary Malaysian Urban Legends

10. The Taxi Passenger
The story goes that one night that one night a taxi driver was working late at night as he clocked ticked to midnight. Suddenly, he saw a beautiful young woman standing at the corner of a traffic light junction. She had long black hair and a flowing white dress. He asked her if she needed a ride. She got in without a word - the taxi driver asked where she wanted to go. The girl simply handed him a piece of paper - it had a number and the name of a road on it. The taxi driver wasn't sure where it was and asked if she could help him. She nodded. She kept nodding every time he went the correct way but never said a word. They finally reached the road - it was narrow, just enough for once car to pass - and dark - there were no working streetlights.

A mist engulfed the car. He tried to peer through the fog and see the numbers of the houses but to his horror - there were none - just rows and rows of gravestones. He was gripped with fear and nervously asked if this was the right place. No answer came from the back seat. He continued to drive but then felt a tap on his shoulder. Too scared to turn round, he stopped the car. He heard the rustle of money and felt her hand giving him cash. He threw it down without even counting it. He heard the back door open and close. He sped home without looking back. The next morning, curiosity got the better of him and he returned to the street. It was indeed a large cemetery. He found the lot number the girl had given him. His eyes widened in horror and he saw the woman's picture staring back at him from a fresh gravestone. He later found out the girl had died the week before in a horrific accident at the very same junction he had picked her up from. It was a hit and run - the driver was never caught.

9. Yellow Volkswagen on Karak Highway
For many Malaysians, the Karak Highway is the most haunted road in the country. This is in part due to it having the highest accident rate in the country. Aside from the reports of an eerie feeling along the road, there are some more solid stories. Perhaps the most famous is that of the Yellow Volkswagen. The story goes that if you see this yellow car, it will block your lane. It will then begin to slow down to a snail's pace, forcing you to overtake it. Once you do that, you'll continue on for a while until it happens again. The same yellow car will be blocking you, it will slow down, you will go past it and then - it happens again. After a few times, you'll realize that its actually the same car and whats even more creepy is that there is nobody driving it. The only way to stop the cycle is to actually not overtake it. Some say that when you are overtaking it, the car will speed up and disappear into darkness.

8. Lang Suyar
This is said to be the ghost of a woman who died while giving birth to a stillborn child. The mother's grief turns her into a flying banshee. On the surface, she will look like a beautiful woman with long nails, hair down to her ankles and dressed all in green. However, don't be fooled by their beauty - the Lang Suyar haunts coastal areas and attacking pregnant women out of jealousy. People believe you can stop a pregnant woman's corpse from being a Lang Suyar. You need to place beads in her mouth, an egg in each armpit and needles place on her hands. This should make it possible for her to pass on peacefully to the afterlife. If everything fails - there is said to be one way to fight and Lang Sugar. You cut off her long nails and stuff the hair into the hole in the back of her neck.

7. The DJ
This urban legend revolves around a Malaysian radio DJ. He had a late night show in the 90s where listeners could call in to share their ghost stories. One night, a man called in to share his story. He said he was driving down a highway late at night with his parents, his wife and their baby. They were asleep and he felt sleepy too. He saw a large truck coming the other way but on his side of the road. It sped past him but before he even had time to collect his thoughts - it happened again.

And then again, and then again. It happened a few more times - each one as shocking as the last. Then, it changed. The truck started appearing behind him - he realised it was chasing him now. He sped up, trying not to panic. As he came over a hill, he suddenly saw a single headlight heading towards him again. He swerved violently to avoid it but lost control of the car, crashing through the highway barrier and into a deep gully. Then, he told the Radio DJ that the crash killed all of his family. He sounded distraught. Then, he said the crashed took his own life as well. He then hung up the phone.

The DJ thought it was just a prank and laughed it off. However, the next days newspaper had a story on the front page - it said an accident had occurred along the highway - the same one described by the caller. A car had crashed the night before - killing an elderly couple, a husband and wife and their baby. The DJ was stunned. He felt the hairs stand up the back of his neck. He rushed to play the tape back from the mystery caller - but all he found was minutes of nothing but silence.

6. The Merman
In 2006, shocking pictures began circulating around Malaysian sites that seemed to show what people were describing as a Merman - that's a male version of a Mermaid. It was supposedly caught by a fisherman in Teluk Bahang beach in Penang. There were 6 photos of the creature, taken from various angles. They were attached to an email that was going around, claiming that the newspapers werenot being allowed to share the pictures. The merman appears vaguely humanoid in shape and seemed to be about the size of an adult male. There were two long fins that resembled large ears on its head. It had two arms and was covered in fins from head to toe - or rather fins. A while later, internet investigators claimed that the pictures had come from an eBay sale in Florida. But die-hard conspiracy theorists believe this is just all part of a coverup and that there are more Merman out there in the Malaysian seas.

5. The Oily Man
In Malaysian folklore, the Oily Man is a supernatural being called into being and controlled by evil witch doctors. It can cover its whole body in a black oily substance that makes him practically invisible at night, difficult to catch, and makes breaking and entering extremely easy. It crawls up the walls and the sides of tall buildings. Once on top of them, it leaps from rooftop to rooftop - some say it's like the Malaysian version of venom - although, the Oily Man definitely came first. Before you say this is just an ancient creature passed down through stories - think again. As recently as 2012, there were reports of a knife-wielding Oily Man leaping from building to building. The residents of Kampung claimed to have seen and heard him for 10 days.

4. The Hotel Bed
The story goes like this. A group of college friends planned a weekend trip to a Malaysian resort during their break. They booked one room with 2 beds, figuring they could save money by fitting 4 of them in there. When they reached the resort they wasted no time in seeing the local attractions for the day. They decided to freshen up back at the hotel before dinner heading out. While one of them was lying on the bed, they complained that it felt lumpy - but they decidednot to complain to the hotel management because they already had too many people in their room. After dinner, they headed out to some bars before returning around midnight. Returning for the room, they got ready for bed - however, when they began to rearrange the mattresses to fit them all in - they saw something truly horrific. There - sandwiched between the mattress and the bed springs - was the corpse of a woman. They ran out of the room and told hotel management. The hotel was keen to avoid any negative publicity and decided to pay the students a lot of money to keep quiet. Still, this rumor began to spread and now many young Malaysian people will make sure  to check if their hotel mattress ever feels too lumpy.

3. Janets Ghost
The story goes that Janet was a young Chinese nurse in Kuching's public hospital. Legend says she disappeared around the late 1960s. This was at a time when there was an epidemic of kidnappings in the city. All the police had figured out were that the kidnappings may be linked to the constructionof Satok bridge. If construction of the bridge was held up, it meant that the territorial spirits were displeased. Human sacrifices had to be made to appease them. Apparently, they preferred to sacrifice virgin girls but only use their heads. This meant they would be decapitated and their heads embedded in the concrete pillars to strengthen the bridge. Eventually, they found Janet's headless body, confirming the polices theory. Her grieving parents buried her in a red dress and red shoes. According to some Chinese belief systems, if a woman dies wearing red, she would returnas a vengeful spirit. They say her parents did this so she could return from the dead and take revenge on her killers. Then, the sightings began. Villagers on the outskirts of the city reported seeing a mysterious woman dressed in red. She would catch rides on motorbikes or cross the ferries. She would always leave behind Chinese hell notes. Her quest to find her killers continue - and she doesn't care who stands in her way.

2. The Toyol
The name for this creature is sometimes translated in English to Goblin - but it's not the kind of Goblin you're thinking of - this thing is much more creepy. Its said to be the spirit of a small child invoked from a dead human fetus. Its traditionally described as looking like a nearly naked baby with brownish skin, large fangs and sharp ears. The Royals always have a master - and the master may be used by its mother to capture other people. It is said the owner of the Toyol may become rich beyond their wildest dreams - but there is always a price to pay when it comes to the spirit world. Becoming the master of a Toyol can bring fortune, but the health of every one of the masters family will steadily decline - they will lose everything and then slowly die. The Toyol is evil in their behavior but childlike in their thinking. People use this to try and distract a Toyol from entering their homes. They scatter buttons on the floor, leave sweets or toys next to them, in the hopes that the Toyol will pass on and spare them another day.

1. The Horror
Remember we were talking earlier about Karak Highway - the haunted road, well we’re returning for another scary story. One day, a couple were traveling down the road to return to their hometown after a relatives wedding. They decided to travel late at night and the journey was going well for a while - but then signs of trouble started. They're trusty Proton Wira began to zigzag wildly on the road. As they struggled to control it, the engine gave a last splutter and then died. The husband was shocked - he had just had the car serviced the day before.

Now, they were stranded by the road, in the middle of the night, and only about halfway to their destination. All around them was desolate hills and jungle. They kept trying to start the car but nothing seemed to work. They gave up and tried to flag someone down for help. When that didn't work, the husband decided to try and find an emergency phone. The wife disagreed because she was afraid that he might get knocked down walking in the dark. He went anyway and told his wife to wait in the car. She waited for what felt like forever - the jungle trees seemed to shift in the dark around her.

Then - there was a loud thump on the roof of the car followed by a rustling sound. She thought it was animals and decided to not get out of the car to check. Then, a cars headlights began to approach from behind. The car slowed down as it passed but then quickly sped off. She waited for hours - others cars did the same. She began to worry more about the rustling sound from the roof and where exactly her husband was. Finally, a police car approached. It stopped a few meters away. The policeman got out and called to her using a megaphone, telling her to back away slowly. When she got to the police car, she looked back out of curiosity. To her horror - she saw her husbands body on the roof of the car. There was a demonic creature feasting on his blood. This had been happening for the hours she was in the car. The police quickly took her away, and the legend began.
