3. Richard Marc Evonitz

Monday September 9th, 1996 was a hot day in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. After school, sixteen-year-old Sophia Sylva was at home with her sister. Sophia decided to do her homework outside. She grabbed a can of soda and then whet and sat on her front porch. A short time later, her sister went outside and found her soda can and her homework on the top step of the porch, But Sophia wasn't there. Her sister assumed that she was just at her friend's home. When her parents arrived home, they both stepped over the soda can and the homework on their way into the house. When Sophia's family realized that no one has seen her for several hours, they became alarmed.

The police and volunteers look for Sophia, but they can't find any trace of her. She was eventually found six weeks later in a shallow pond about 20 miles from her home. Her body had been wrapped in a blue quilted moving blanket, and she had been there for several weeks. The medical examiner said that she was probably killed within a day or two of being kidnapped. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. On her body. the medical examiner found some blue fibers. After her body was found, a 44 year old neighbor of Sofia's family became a suspect in her murder. In his van the police found blue fibers and forensic experts said that they were a match to the fibers found on Sophia.

He was arrested on lesser charge for a different crime, and held while the police and the district attorney built a murder case against him. But then nine months later, something happened that changed the direction of the case. Two sisters, 15 year-old Kristin and 12 year-old Kati Lisk, disappeared from their front yard in Spotsylvania after school on May 1st, 1997. The sisters lived less than 10 miles away from Sofia Sylva. Their bodies were found five days later in a creek about 40 miles away from their home. They both had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. Investigators immediately noticed similarities between the murders of the Lisk sisters and Sofia Silva Notably, all three young women went missing from their front yards in broad daylight.

All three have been sexually assaulted, strangled, dumped in shallow bodies of water, and blue fibers were found on their bodies. Male DNA was also found on Sophia and the sisters. The DNA was compared and it was a match, proving that the same man killed all three girls. Since Sofia's neighbor was sitting in prison when the sisters were kidnapped and killed, he couldn't have been the killer. It turned out that the blue fibers didn't come from his van. The forensic expert who examined the fibers had developed tunnel vision and lied about the results. After the DNA was tested, the neighbour was released from prison.

The forensic expert who lied about the results ended up losing her job. The murders terrified the citizens of Spotsylvania County. Who strangled to death the three young women and would he strike again? A few uneasy years went by in Spotsylvania and no other young women were kidnapped, but the killer hadn't been identified, either, and he could have been walking the streets. Then in 2005 there was another kidnapping. But this one wasn't in Spotsylvania. This one happened over 400 miles away in Columbia, South Carolina. 15 year-old Kara Robinson was inside of a friend's home watering flowers when she vanished. There were no witnesses. It was just like she vanished into thin air. Her family and friends feared the worst. But 18 hours later, Robinson walked into a police station, wearing shackles.

She told an officer that a man in his late 30's pulled up to her as she was watering the flowers outside of her friend's home. He got out of his car, walked up to her, and asked her if she wanted to buy any magazines. Kara said no, and instead of leaving the man pulled out a gun. He ordered Kara to get into a Rubbermaid container in the trunk of his car. After securing her in the Rubbermaid container, the man drove away. When the car stopped and turned off, he picked up the Rubbermaid container that contained Kara and carried her into his apartment. He kept her captive for the next 18 hours. He sexually assaulted her repeatedly, and he did sadistic things like make her watch news coverage of her own disappearance.

Kara says she just did everything that was asked of her. She was nice and respectful towards him and she even started cleaning up his apartment. Eventually the man decided it was time to go to bed. He shackled Kara to a bedpost and then fell asleep on the bed beside her. When Kara heard him snoring, she managed to slip her hands from the shackles fastening her to the bed. Once she freed herself, she ran from the apartment and flagged down a passing car. She then convinced the driver to take her to the police station. As they drove away, she pointed out her kidnapper's apartment and told the driver and the passenger to remember it. Kara told the police everything she could about the man and the apartment.

Because of her information, her kidnapper was identified as Richard Marc Evonitz. The police raced to his apartment, but he was gone. In his apartment, they found a footlocker and inside of it were several trophies from the murders of Sofia Silva and the List sisters. His DNA was also compared to the DNA found on the three victims, and it was a match. Two days later, the serial killer was finally located. Evonitz had called his sister and asked her to meet. She called the authorities and told them that he was in Sarasota, Florida. When the police located him, Evonitz led them on a high-speed chase. He ran over some tire spikes and was forced to get out of his car.

When he got out of the car, he had a gun in one of his hands. The police told him to surrender, and when he didn't, they released a dog on him. Evonitz was bit by the dog several times, and then he put the gun in his mouth and shot himself. Since the information that Kara gave to the police led to Evonitz being exposed as the killer of the three young women, she was given the one hundred fifty thousand dollar reward that had been offered for information surrounding the murders. Kara said that she got through the ordeal because she stayed calm. In 2010, Kara became a sheriff's deputy in South Carolina. She said that she was disappointed that Evonitz killed himself. She wanted him to go to trial so that when he saw her testifying against him, he would know that she was the reason that he was going to prison. She wanted him to know that kidnapping her was the biggest mistake of his life.

2. Lorenzo Montoya

On February 2nd, 2009, a woman was walking her dog in an empty lot in West Mesa which is an area on the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico. As she walked she saw a large bones sitting on the earth. She thought the bone looked odd, so she took a picture and texted to her sister who was a nurse. Her sister told her it was a human femur. The police were called and they started to excavate the area. In total they found the bones of 11 women and a fetus buried in shallow graved, all within a 100 acre area.

Over the next year the police were able to identify all the women The first woman who went missing was 21 year-old Monica Candelaria who was last seen alive on May 11th, 2003. Her family heard rumors the man named Isaac had bragged about murdering her and buried her in West Mesa. The family told the police what they heard and the police either didn't investigate the tip, or, if they did they didn't find anything. Half a year later, in October 2003, 27 year-old Doreen Marquez vanished. Then, from the beginning of 2004 until September of that year, Nine more women went missing and they would all be found buried within the 100 acres at West Mesa.

They range in age from 15 to 32 and most were Hispanic, one was black, and the rest were white. Nearly all of them had a history of prostitution, drugs, or both. There was one exception. that was 15 year-old, Jamie Barela. She was last seen on the April 3rd, 2004 when she and her cousin, 27 year old Evelyn Salazar, left a family party to go to a park. Salazar went missing at the same time and her body was also found buried in West Mesa. The last woman to go missing that was found buried in West Mesa was Michelle Valdes, who was four months pregnant when she went missing in September 2004.

Nearly a year after Valdez went missing, the Albuquerque Police realized that several women who had a history of drug use and prostitution had been reported missing between 2001 and 2006. In total, they compiled the list of sixteen names of missing women. The police never made the list public. The year after the list was compiled, a crime reporter with the newspaper in Albuquerque was doing a ride-along with some officer and she learned of the existence of the list. She wrote a story about it and it was published in September 2007.

Then the first bone was found in February 2009. Out of the list of 16 women, 10 of the women were found in West Mesa. The 11th woman that was found but wasn't on the list was Syllania Edwards. She wasn't on the list because she wasn't reported missing in Albuquerque. There were very little clues at the burial site of the 11 women who all disappeared between May 2003 and September 2004. Most of the remains were just bones, so the medical examiners couldn't even distinguish the cause of death for any of the women.

Since none of the bones bore signs of bullet or knife wounds, it's believed that the women were strangled. But they can't say that for certain. The possible clues that they did find, which have been made public, is a plant egg that is found on newly purchased plants, and some carpet fibers. The killer was given the misleading name the West Mesa Bone Collector. It is misleading because he didn't collect or keep any of his victims bones or pieces of their bones like the killer in Geoffrey Deaver's book The Bone Collector, Which was adapted into a movie in 1999 starring Denzel, Washington.

He was called that because when the remains of his victims were found they were mostly just bones. Less than six months after the first bone was found the police developed a list of five suspects, but didn't identify them publicly. Five years, later a local television news reporter in Albuquerque identified two of the five suspects. The first one came to the attention of the police within a week of the bones first being discovered. His name is Joseph Blea. A week after the first bone was found, one of his ex-wives called the police and said he was capable of being the killer.

Blea had an extensive record with the police Between 1990 and 2009, the police encountered him 130 times. Many times they came across him in an area of Albuquerque known for prostitution and drugs. The police even have circumstantial evidence linking him to the graves in West Mesa. It is the plant egg that was found buried with one of the victims. The police were able to trace the tag back to a nursery or Blea had been a regular customer. Perhapps most damning is that Blea  is connected to another murder in a series of terrifying sexual assaults on teenage girls.

In 1985, 22 year-old Jennifer Lynn Shirm, who worked in the sex trade, was found beaten to death under some brush in Albuquerque. In 2009, the police were alerted to the fact that Blea's DNA was a match to the DNA found on the victim. However he was never charged for that murder. Instead, in 2013, it was announced that he was the prime suspect in a series of sexual assaults on at least four teenagers between 1988 and 1993. The details of only one attack were made public and those details revealed Blea was a terrifying predator.

In 1988, he broke into the home of a mother and daughter while they were at work and school. Once inside, he waited for the 13 year old girl to come home. He grabbed the girl and then sexually assaulted her at knife point. He luckily left her alive. A lawyer who was involved in the trial said that this attack was similar to the assaults he committed on the other three teenagers In 2015, Blea was convicted of those attacks and he was sentenced to 90 years of prison. Blea has never been charged with murder and he's currently appealing his sexual assault convictions.

The second suspect in the West Mesa murders that was identified in the news report, was a man named Lorenzo Montoya. Like Blea, Montoya was known to hang out in the area of Albuquerque where drug users the prostitutes frequented. He also had been arrested several times for soliciting prostitutes and his ex-girlfriend said he was abusive. One ex-girlfriend said that he threatened to kill her and bury her in lime. On December 17 2006, Montoya met 19 year-old Sherick Hill online. They met at a bar and Hill agreed to go back to Montoya's trailer home to perform a private dance for him.

Hill drove her own car and on the way to Montoya's she picked up her boyfriend, Frederick Williams. They drove to Montoya's trailer and. when they got there, Hill went inside the trailer while Williams sat in the car. After an hour, Hill hadn't come back to the trailer so Williams went to go check on her. When Williams walked up to the trailer, he saw Montoya dragging Hill's limp body, that was bound with duct tape. Both Williams of Montoya were carrying guns. When they saw each other they pulled out their guns, and they aimed it at each other Williams fired and Montoya was hit. The police and paramedics arrived a short time later.

Both Montoya and 22 year-old Sherick Hill were dead. Williams wasn't charged because the police deemed the shooting to be self-defense. Before Williams had shot him, Montoya had bound Hill's wrists and ankles with duct tape and strangled her. He was killed as he was dragging her body out to his car, presumably so he could take her somewhere to dispose of her. Montoya was killed three years before the graves were found, but after his death he became the prime suspect in the rash of disappearances.

The lead investigator said that the murder of Hill was meticulous, and he highly doubted it was Montoya's first murder. Although they wouldn't know it for another three years, the graves were less than three miles from where Montoya lived. The police search Montoya's trailer and found several unusual videotapes. The contents of one videotape were made public. It shows Montoya having sex with an unidentified woman, and then the recording stops. A little bit later on the same tape, there's the following clip. It only shows the wall and Montoya's trailer, but you can hear someone pulled duct tape off a roll and a plastic bag, quite possibly a garbage bag, is being rustled.

Some investigators suspect that while the video was recording, Montoya was preparing to dispose of a body. There were some carbon fibers found among the remains in West Mesa and they were compared to carpet fibers at Montoya's trailer. They were not a match. But proponents who think that Lorenzo Montoya was the West Mesa Bone Collector Point out that women stopped disappearing after he was killed. There were six women on the list of 16 who weren't found buried in West Mesa. One went missing in 2001 and the other five went missing between January 2005 and May 2006 and then Montoya was killed in December 2006

Besides the eleven victims found buried in West Mesa, and the other six missing women, the police fear there may be more victims. In 2015 they released stills taken from videotapes of two women. The images are grainy, but the police are hoping that someone will recognize the women. They may be victims or they may have information proving that Montoya was the West Mesa Bone Collector. Unfortunately, despite the police putting a lot of time and effort into the case, they can't say with certainty who is the West Mesa Bone Collector.

1. William Nance

In 1974, Missoula Montana had a population of just over 30,000 people. On February 5th, the city was rocked by a horrifying crime. Five year old Siobhan McGinnis was walking home alone when she was kidnapped. Her body was found two days later on the outskirts of the city, down near the interstate. She had been sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. A few months later, the city was rocked by another brutal murder. 39 year-old Donna Pounds was found dead in the basement of her home. She had been sexually assaulted, and then her wrists and ankles were bound with duct tape. She had been forced onto her knees and then she was shot five times in the back of the head.

The gun was left on the floor between her legs. Throughout different bedrooms of the home there were ropes tied to the bedposts. The town was in a panic a rumor started to swirl Many people in the city thought that the murders were the work of Satanists. They believed that the murders were part of a series of three. They thought the Satanists would kill a virgin, a Christian woman, and finally a betrayer. Siobhan McGinnis was the virgin, and Donna Pounds, who was the wife of a minister, was the Christian woman. People with a guilty conscience in Missoula lived in fear that they may be the betrayer. But the third satanic murder didn't happen.

What the citizens in Missoula didn't know was that the police has suspect in the murder of Donna Pounds. The suspect was a strange 18-year old man who lived in the same neighborhood as Pounds, and he was friends with her children. He was seen in the Pound's backyard around the time of the murder. However, they couldn't find enough evidence to charge him. Before long, the murders of Siobhan McGinnis and Donna Pounds both went cold. Five years after the murders, the body of a young teenage girl was found in Beavertail State Park, just east of Missoula. She had been there for three or four months and her body had decomposed greatly.

The medical examiner determined that she had been stabbed to death. She did not match any local missing-persons reports and instead of being another Jane Doe, she was given the name Beavertail Betty. Another six years would go by. And then, in September 1985, another body of a young teenage girl was found in the Missoula Valley. This time the body was found near Crystal Creek, about 20 miles away from where Beavertail Betty was found. Like Beavertail Betty, the police were not able to identify the girl. She was dubbed Christie Crystal Creek. She had been shot to death.

A few months later on December 12, there was a horrifying home invasion in Ravalli County, Montana, which is about 60 miles south of Missoula. A man  had forced his way into the home of Mike and Teresa Shook. Teresa had been baking sugar cookies with her two youngest children while the oldest child slept. After entering the home, the man shot Teresa on the ankle and then struck Mike in the head with a blunt object. Mike was tied up and then the killer plunged a knife into his chest After they had seen their parents attacked, the two youngest children were put into their cribs and then the man took Teresa into the master bedroom.

At some point, a towel was wrapped around her ankle to stem the bleeding from the gunshot. She was tied to the bed, sexually assaulted and finally stabbed in the chest. After killing Mike and Teresa, the man started a fire in the family's home. He walked out of the house, leaving the couple's three children, who were all under the age of seven, to die in the fire. Luckily, the fire didn't spread quickly and the neighbors were able to save the children. Only two things were taken from the family's home: a silver dollar collection and a hunting knife. Two weeks later, the third body of a teenage girl was found in the Missoula Valley.

She was buried in a shallow grave. She had been shot to death and she had been dead at least three or four months. Based on where she was found, she was called Debbie Deer Creek. Nine months passed by and no progress was made on any of the cases. Then on September 4th 1986, the police were called to the home of Doug and Kris Wells in Missoula. Their house was a bloody crime scene. The worst night of the couple's life unfolded when a man named Wayne Nance stopped by their home. Nance was a 31 year old furniture delivery man that worked for a furniture company that was managed by Kris Wells.

Doug Wells was outside when Nance approached him and asked if he could borrow a flashlight. Doug agreed and let Nance into his home. When he did, Nance struck Doug in the back of the head. At gunpoint, Nance forced Kris to tie up her husband. Nance then tied Kris up in the bedroom. Nance dragged Doug into the basement, where he tied him to a pole and beat him. Nance then pulled out an 8-inch knife and buried it into Doug's chest. Nance pulled the knife out of Doug's chest and went upstairs to assault Kris, leaving Doug to bleed to death in the basement.

Amazingly, Doug didn't die. He was able to free himself and he grabbed a rifle that he had in the basement. He loaded the rifle with one round and walked up the stairs. Nance heard Doug coming up the stairs towards the bedroom so Nance ran towards the stairs with his knife in hand, ready to finish off Doug. Doug saw Nance. He aimed his rifle and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Nance in the side of the abdomen. Without any more ammo, Doug turned his rifle around and started swinging it like a baseball bat at Nance, who made his way back to the bedroom.

When Nance got into the bedroom, he grabbed his 22 caliber revolver and fired three times at Doug. One bullet hit Doug in the leg, but he didn't stop swinging the rifle. He finally connected the butt of the rifle with Nance's head and this caused Nance to drop his gun. Doug picked up Nance's gun and fired a bullet into his head. Nance finally stopped moving. 911 was called and Doug was rushed to the hospital. Both he and his wife, Kris, survived the brutal encounter. Nance was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The police quickly realized that the home invasion wasn't an isolated incident for Nance, and he was really a vicious serial killer that left a trail of bodies in his way wake. When they looked at Nance's home, they found hair which belonged to Debbie Deer Creek, the girl whose body was found on Christmas Eve 1985. They also found a strip of black-and-white photographs of Nance and the girl together, but there were no other clues to her identity. When the girl was killed, Nance was working at a bar in Missoula. While working there he met a lot of young females, a few who were runaways. Debbie Deer Creek was one of those runaways. Witnesses said that she lived with Nance for a while and when she went missing, he told people that she ran off with a trucker.

In 2006, her DNA was matched to a missing-persons report. Debbie Deer Creek was 16 year-old Marcella Bachman, who was reported missing seven months before her body was found. She had hitchhiked from her home in Vancouver, Washington, and she ended up at the bar in Missoula where Nance worked. Sometime in late September 1984, after living with him for a few weeks, Nance led to the creek where he had already dug her grave. He forced her to get into the grave and then shot her three times in the back of the head. A few weeks before her body was found, Mike and Teresa Shook were killed in their home.

There were obvious similarities between the attacks on the Wells and the Shooks. The police were able to confirm that Nance killed the Shooks after the silver dollar collection and the hunting knife that was stolen from their home on the night that they were killed were found in Nance's home. christy Crystal Creek was the second girl who was found dead in the Missoula Valley in September 1985. Unfortunately she has never been identified. The first girl, who was found in Beavertail Hill State Park in 1979, Betty Beavertail, was identified 30 years after she was killed.

She was 15 year old, Devonna Nelson, who disappeared in July 1978 after she ran away from her home in Seattle. There's no definitive evidence tying adds to the murders of Devonna Nelson and Christy Crystal Creek but Nance is the only suspect in their murders. But there was evidence that Nance was responsible for the 1975 murder of Donna Pounds. Shortly after the murder, the police had suspect, and it was an eighteen year old neighbor that was friends with pounds children. The strange 18 year old neighbor was Wayne Nance. When the police searched his home after Pounds' murder, they found a pair of bloody underwear. The problem was that they couldn't link the blood on the underwear to the crime scene.

So that's why he was never charged in connection with Pounds' murder. Finally, there's the murder of five year old Siobhan McGinnis, the first murder that rocked Missoula. After William Nance was killed, many people, including Siobhan's mother, assumed that he was the one who killed her. In 2008, DNA found on Siobhan was compared to Nance's DNA. It was not a match, meaning Nance didn't kill the five-year-old. As for who did kill her, that is still a mystery to this day. But her family is hoping that one day they'll find a match to the DNA. Before he was stopped by Doug Wells, Wayne Nance killed at least four people, and he is the only suspect in two other murders.

10. The Russian Sleep Experiment

Some of you guys may have heard of this before - it became a very popular creepypasta a few years ago and for good reason. According to legend, Russian scientists in the 1940s took 5 prison inmates and locked them in an airtight chamber with a special gas inside that made them unable to sleep. They wanted to study the effects of sleep deprivation over 30 days. On day 5 - the inmates stopped talking to each other. By day 9, some of them were screaming, begging to get out. One of the others tore apart the books they were given, smeared them with their own feces and then covered the one way mirror with it which the scientists were using to observe them. The screaming stopped. By day 15, they announced over the intercom that they were coming in - a voice replied -We no longer want to be freed- … they opened up the chamber to find one of the inmates had been torn to pieces by the others.

They had also mutilated themselves almost to the point of death. The team tried to surgically reverse the damage on their brain but they resisted and couldnt be sedated - they just laughed and laughed. They demanded to be let back into the chamber which the head scientist agreed to. Appalled at what he was seeing, one of the scientists shot the head scientist and the remaining subjects. Before killing the last one he asked -What ARE you?- … the prisoner responded -Have you forgotten so easily? We are you. We are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every moment in your deepest animal mind. We are what you hide from in your beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread- … the scientist fired the gun and killed him.

9. The Legend of Brosnya

The Brosnya is said to be an ancient, mythological beast that lives within the waterways of the Andreapol District. Perhaps the closest comparison for a western audience would be the Loch Ness Monster. The Brosnya lurks below the surface there, many have heard of it - but few have seen it. They describe it as a prehistoric creature with a dragons head and long thin tail. There have been accounts of the beast going back well over a thousand years. One notable example involves a Mongol army in the 8th century that fled the area after the Brosnya attacked them - eating their soldiers and horses. 8. Ivan Vassili

Thats the name of a ship not a person. It was built in St Petersburg in 1897. Everything was fine for about 25 years and then, in 1903, something changed. The crew were in the Indian ocean when they felt a strange presence - almost as if an invisible entity was watching them - there was a chill in the air. One night, they saw an apparition - a human figure that stolled across the deck - its features too blurry to make out - it then disappeared behind a lifeboat. A few nights later, when the ship was docked in China, a crew member screamed out into the night - sending everyone into a crazy panic - they lost their minds and went berserk - beating each other and themselves.

It only ended when one of the crew members threw himself overboard and died. A few days later, it happened again, the crew became possessed with fighting rage and only ended with another crew members death by drowning. The crew abandoned ship at port - the new crew set sail but the same thing happened to them - 4 people died including the captain, all of them threw themselves overboard. 7. The Well To Hell

This one comes from Siberia - a part of Russia thats perhaps one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. Youll rarely find people here - which is why a lot of stories have sprouted up around it. According to legend, a scientific team were drilling a hole to study samples in the Siberian permafrost. Suddenly, the drill started malfunctioning and letting off intense heat - then they heard faint noises coming from within. They scrambled to get a microphone and began feeding it down the hole so they could hear better. They realised the noises were actually human voices - coming from deep in the ground - and they were screaming out in pain. The terrified team packed up and left - convinced they had found a well to hell.

6. The Black Volga

This one comes from the height of the cold war during the 1960s and 70s. During that time, many Russians talked of a Black Volga - an expensive car usually driven by those high up in the Soviet Government. They said that this particular car would appear out of nowhere, its side mirrors were actually horns and it would steal children from the side of the road - never to be see again. Whats more, some say the car was driven by the Devil himself. For me though - the scariest part of the story is yet to come. It was said that those who doubted the stories authenticity would be dead within 24 hours. Of course, this only made the story spread even faster - do you dare doubt its authenticity? Actually you probably do.

5. Snake Lubac

Some Russians believe that occasionally, a shooting star falling to Earth may actually be a Snake-Lubac, a demonic figure that resembles a giant snake. Its often called -the fiery serpent- due to its fiery descent to Earth in a huge ball of fire. After it lands and the dust settles, the Snake-Lubac takes on human form. To be more specific, it takes on the form of a lost love that died to whomever it appears in front of. It chooses people who are desperate to see their partner one last time. The Snake Lubac then tricks the person into believing they never died - once the person is under its spell, it slowly convinces them to convince suicide - a fate which many say is unavoidable.

4. Chernobyl Black Bird

Im sure many of you guys have heard about Chernobyl - the nuclear power plant meltdown that happened in 1986, leaving a large part of the Soviet Union uninhabitable because of radiation. According to some of the locals who lived nearby - there were signs of the disaster coming. Some of them experienced nightmares, strange phone calls and encounters with a huge winged monster they called the Blackbird of Chernobyl. Apparently it looked like a twisted hybrid of bird and human with huge wings and big red eyes. Some even say they saw it over the reactors during the meltdown. Is it just some stupid story? Does this creature warn people of impending doom or perhaps even cause it?

3. UVB-76

Also known as -The Buzzer-, this is the nickname given to a shortwave radio station that broadcasts a short, monotonous buzzing noise all day, every day and has been doing t since 1973 - 45 years ago. Nobody knows why or where this creepy station is. Sometimes the buzzer signal is interrupted by a Russian voice that reads out a string of random phrases and numbers. The message usually starts with -UVB76- … when the message stops, the buzzing begins again - sometimes for years. Theories have ranged from military communication to a way to announce a nuclear war has begun.

2. The Collector

In old Russian folk lore, the collector is a strange, dark figure who kidnaps people, kills them and then puts their mummified bodies on display for his own pleasure. If that sounds too disturbing to be true then think again. Russians were shocked in 2011 to learn that there was a real life version of The Collector that had been arrested. He used to dig up corpses and dress their remains in womens clothing to display around his home. In total, he did this with an astounding 29 corpses. If theres anything worse than an urban legend - its a real one coming to life.

According to Russian folklore, she is a supernatural being who appears as a deformed old woman. She flies around in a giant mortar while using the pestle to steer. Deep in the Russian woods, she lives in a log cabin that moves around on a pair of chicken legs. The keyhole to her door is filled with sharp teeth, the fence outside is made with human human bones topped with skulls - she always leaves one empty for you. She is said to kidnap children and threaten to eat them - an emphasis is placed on the need for proper preparation of purity of spirit when meeting, as well as politeness. Today we continued our quest to discover scary tales from all over the world. In this Topic well be visiting a land steeped in myths and legends, some of them are modern, some of them are ancient, but all of them are feared by the people who know them. This is the Top 10 Scary Mexican Urban Legends.

10. White Death

The White Death is said to be a vengeful spirit in Mexico who hunts down anyone who knows about her existence. If its true, Im sorry to drag all of you guys in to it. Shes said to be an undead girl with cold black eyes that weep blood. She glides but never walks and stalks her victims like wild animals, chasing them back to their homes. Then, she waits until night and knocks at the door. One knock means she wants your skin, 2 for your hair, 3 for your bones, 4 for your heart, 5 for your teeth, 6 for your eyes and 7 for your soul - which she will swallow hole.

9. La Lechuza

According to legend, she was a witch who used magic to turn herself into a giant white owl. Its said that she sold her soul to the devil to become more powerful. Sometimes she appears as an owl the size of a human being, with the head of an owl and the body of an elderly woman. She is said to wait outside the house of her victims, crying out into the night until they step outside.

8. The Phantom of The Park

In the small city of Jaral Del Progreso lies a park called the Benito Juarez Park. Its built on the remains of an old, forgotten cemetery. The locals say this disturbed the spirits of the dead and unleashed a deadly curse. Every night, the benches were vandalized and nobody knew who caused the damage. The city hited a security guard to patrol the grounds. One night, around midnight, a dense fog emerged and crept out over the park. The guard heard the cries of a woman. Then, he saw her - a shadowy figure lurking near the park benches. It looked like an old woman in a long white dress. When he got closer, he saw she had no legs and was floating above the ground. Then, she attacked him. He managed to escape and told his boss the next morning. A few days later, he died of a mysterious illness. Locals have now accepted the phantom of the park - and they know a mysterious illness will fall upon anyone who sees her at midnight.

7. La Malinche

The story dates back to 1522 when the noble Aztec woman La Malinche had two sons with the Spanish conquistador Cortes. He told her he was going to return to Spain with his sons, she had a dream where one of her Gods appeared and said -If you let him take your children, one of them will return and destroy your people. The night before Cortes  departed, La Malinche escaped with the boys - Cortes’ soldiers chased them to the lake on which Mexico city now lies. Just before capturing them, she stapped the boys in their heart with a dagger and dropped their bodies into the water. She screamed out into the night, saying -Oh my children- … in the centuries since then, many Mexican families have reported seeing her ghost wandering the streets at night, grieving the loss of her children. The families lock up their kids for fear of her doing the same thing to them.

6. La Planchada

In the 1930s, a nurse known as La Planchada worked at Hospital Juarez. Her name roughly translates to The Ironed Lady. She fell for a doctor but he left her for another woman. La Planchada was distraught and fell into a deep depression. She deteriorated and eventually succumbed to an illness which killed her. Legend says that she returned to the land of the living with a hatred for all other nurses. Ever since then, she walks the corridors of hospitals at night - caring for patients while they sleep, but ready to release her anguish if she comes across another nurse.

5. The Red Car

This legend tells of a group of witches who travel the roads looking for men. Theyre also known as the carriage of the witches. The red car travels the roads at night between Mexico City and Cuernavaca. The passengers are 3 witches disguised as beautiful women. When they see a man alone by the side of the road, they pull over and try to get him inside. If the man accepts, he is usually found some time later, lying lifeless by the side of the road - battered, bruised and witch strange arcane symbols all over his body. Its thought that they are sacrificed to the devil as part of an occult ritual - and the car is red only because of the blood of the victims.

4. The Tube House

This is an abandoned mansion in Monterrey Mexico. It was built in the 1970s by a family of 3 who wanted to make a comfortable place to live for their daughter who was in a wheelchair. When the parents brought their daughter to see the home for the first time, the little girl fell off one of the ramps and went straight through a window, falling to her death. The parents were distraught and eventually put the house up fro sale. In the years since then, visitors have sworn they have seen the ghost of the little girl. They see her standing there in the same window she fell to her death from - waving and smiling, forever.

3. El Cucuy

According to legend, El Cucuy is small, hideous, hair creature with deep glowing red eyes. He has ears like a bat and a mount full of teeth as sharp as daggers. El Cucuy comes out at night to steal children away. Some say he can take the form of any dark shadow which he uses to watch children as they sleep. Once the child is asleep, El Cucuy will pounce and take them away to his lair. Children will hide in their wardrobes or under their beds. He is essentially the Mexican version of the boogeyman, or perhaps the very same person.

2. Chupacabra

This is the story of a strange beast that blurs the lines between fact and fiction. Some describe it as a vicious furry lizard like creature with bulging red eyes, fanged teeth and a long darting tongue. Its name roughly translates to Goat Sucker because of its tendency to pray on goats and other livestock. The animals it attacks are left with every ounce of blood drained out of them. What kind of creature would do this? Is it something natural or not?

1. The Severed Hands

In Mexico, some people say there exists -The Alley of the Hands- … in 1780, a priest set up in the town of Alfalfa in Mexico. He hired two boys to help look after the horses. One night, the boys returned to the house to find the priest had been murdered. They ran to get help. The police couldnt figure out who did it and began to suspect it was the two boys. After intense interrogation the boys began to blame each other. They were put on trial and found guilty - they were hung by the neck and then their hands were cut off. The hands were then hung on the wall of the alley outside the priests house as a warning to others. Ever since then, people have been afraid to walk through the Alley of the Hands. Whenever they do, they make the sign of the cross and pray. Locals say that on a cold dark night in November, you can see the skeletal hands floating above you in the alley.

10. Cressie

Cressie is said to be a mysterious, eel like creature said to lurk in the waters of Crescent lake in NewFoundland and Labrador. Stories of Cressie date back to Native Canadian legends which refer to it as the Pond Devil or Swimming Demon. Their fears were also held by European settlers who arrived at the lake during the early 20th century. Since then, there have been dozens of sightings of Cressie with one report saying it could be as much as 15ft long.

9. The St Louis Ghost Train

In the town of St Louis in Saskatchewan lies the village of St Louis. There, you can find an old abandoned train track. Many of the locals there have reported seeing strange floating lights moving along the train track during the night. Others have said a ghost train will appear on the track, looking like the ones from the 19th century. Another story is that the ghost of a workman who died during the tracks construction will appear.

8. The Forbidden Plateau

This plateau in Western Canada has long been regarded as a mysterious place. The Native Canadians would hide their families in the forested plateau during wars with other tribes. One day, the warriors returned to find their family had disappeared. They believe that evil spirits took them away and vowed never to step foot there again - earning it the name the Forbidden plateau. Many have taken this story to heart and stay clear of the eerie presence there.

7. Young Teazer

This was an American ship that was destroyed in the war of 1812. It was wrecked in Novia Scotia where some people believe its ghost can still be seen today. People swear they have seen the Teazer Light - a fiery glow of a flaming ship near the site of the explosion. Accounts began in the late 19th century and since then, many people have said the ship appears on the 27th of June - the day it sank. Others have gone even further and said the ship also holds the ghosts of the sailors who died in the explosion, forced to relive their deaths forever.

6. Christie Mansion

Its now Regis College in Toronto but Christie Mansion used to be the home of William Mellis Christie - a successful businessman. His son Robert inherited the mansion and set up a secret chamber for his mistress. She lived there for many years until Roberts affections for her began to wane. Eventually, she hung herself in Room 29. Ever since then, people have said the room is cursed. Legend says if you enter room 29 by yourself at night, the door will swing shut by itself and youll be trapped there forever, just like the ghost of the mistress.

5. Peggys Cove

On a rocky outcrop in Nova Scotia, you can find a lonely lighthouse. The story goes that in 1800, a woman named Peggy washed up on the rocks there after being shipwrecked. Tragically, her children all drowned. Peggy went on to marry one of locals and live on the cove. She would often walk along the rocks at night, calling out to them in her grief. One night, her husband went out with her and danced on the rocks to cheer her up. He lost his footing and slipped, sending him into the rocks which killed him. Soon after, she jumped off the same rocks and ended her life. Visitors swear that on dark stormy nights, you can see the ghost of a woman in a blue dress standing at the edge of the rocks, ready to jump.

4. John Troyer

By all accounts, he might be the closest thing Canada has to a witch hunter. He was born into an Amish family in America before replacing to Ontario in Canada. He was a Dr who was terrified of witches. Legend says that he would stalk witches in the woods until they led him to their den. He would then steal the broomsticks for personal transport. He would also set up witch traps to capture them. Whether or not you believe the whole broomstick or witches thing, there is evidence of John Troyers traps which are essentially human sized bear traps.

3. The Dungarvon Whooper

This is a famous ghost story coming from New Brunswick and dating back to the late 19th century. According to legend, a young Irish cook called Ryan worked at a lumberjack camp. While the other lumberjacks were out, the boss killed Ryan. When they return, he told them Ryan got sick and died suddenly. They bury him some distance from the camp. However, a loud whooping sound kept them awake. The whooping got so loud that they fled the camp, convinced it was Ryans vengeful ghost. In the years since, many have reported the Whooping that can be heard in the woods, as Ryan seeks vengeance on the living.

2. The Legend of Rose Latulippe

This is a French Canadian legend that dates back to the 18th century. There are more than 200 different versions of the legend but they mostly share the same theme. Rose Latulipe was a young girl who loved to dance. On the night of Mardi Gras, a stranger appeared at her house and danced with her until midnight. At that moment, he was revealed to be the devil. She tried to escape but it was too late, the Devil took Rose back to hell where she remains to this day, dancing with her at his whim.

1. Oak Island

Legend says that treasure an be found on Oak Island in Nova Scotia. Since the 19th century, people have been convinced that the treasure there includes the likes of Mari Antoinettes jewels and even missing Shakespeare manuscripts. A number of people have died trying to search for the treasure. The legend began with the discovery of a large pit which seems to be man made. Its almost 200ft deep and has been protected by booby traps which have killed a number of explorers. There are even underground channels that lead to the beach over 500ft away. Treasure hunters are convinced that all of this must have been built to hide treasure from hundreds of years ago.

We have a country that is very dear to heart - Ireland. Its history goes back thousands of years and contains many amazing stories - some of them are pretty scary though - they've survived since ancient times - does this mean theres some truth to them? And this is the Top 10 Scary Irish Urban Legends.

10. The Demon Bride of County Monaghan

This is a story of death. The Demon bride is said to have terrorised funeral goers for at least 200 years - her victims now lie in the churchyards where they fell. Across County Monaghan, people report the same thing - the demon bride watches funerals and waits as the deceased are laid to rest. As everyone leaves, the Demon Bride approaches a young man straggling behind. She transforms into a beautiful young woman and makes him promise to meet her a month from that day back at the graveyard. She seals the deal with a kiss and then vanishes. As he leaves the graveyard, his blood runs cold and a deep sense of despair washes over him. He realises he has sold his body and soul to the evil spirit and his life has been forfeited. Over the next month, he descends into madness before eventually dying. He is laid to rest in the same graveyard as before, exactly a month after he first met the demon bride - his promise fulfilled.

9. The Banshee

The Banshee is a female spirit that wails in the night as a sign that death is coming for a family member. Legend says the banshee has long, streaming hair, wears a grey cloak over a green dress and her eyes are red from constant weeping. According to the -Ancient Legends of Ireland- book, the Banshee -may be seen at night as a shrouded woman, crouched beneath the trees, lamenting with veiled face or flying past the moonlight, crying bitterly. And the cry of this spirit is mournful beyond all other sounds on earth, and betokens certain death to some member of the family whenever it is heard in the silence of the night.

8. The Dearg-Due

Many countries have a vampire legend, this is the Irish one. The name translates from Irish as -red blood sucker- . Originally the Dearg-Due was a normal girl who lives over two thousand years ago. She was said to be beautiful, with blood red lips and pale blond hair. Her true name has been lost in the sands of time, overshadowed by what she became. Men travelled from all over Ireland in the hopes of being with her. However, she fell in love with a local man who was very poor. He was perfect for her but without money, her Father would never let them marry. Instead, he married her off to an old, cruel man who abused her. He also liked to draw blood from her while she was locked in a tower cell.

One day, she gave up hope of her true love ever rescuing her and committed suicide by refusing to eat. Her dying breath was of vengeance against the living. Her undead corpse rose from the Earth on the night she was buried, thirsting for the blood that was taken from her. She was now the Dearg-Due, stealing blood from children, from the innocent and especially from young men. She would call to them in the night with a haunting siren song that lured them to their deaths. Some say she still wanders to the Irish countryside at night, calling out to her next victim …

7. The Changelings

These are mythical fairy creatures that take the place of a newborn human child that has been stolen by the fairies. The fairies will still the child to act as a servant. Families would try and see if their baby was a changeling through a number of different ways. One involved placing them over a fire. If the baby wass a changeling, it would leave by climbing up the chimney. The real child would then be returned. It was thought that the fairies prefered to steal baby boys. As a result, many Irish families would dress their baby boys in dresses as to confuse the fairies.

6. The Dullahan

The Dullahan is a headless rider of the night who carries his own head under one arm. His mouth is locked in a hideous grin that touches both sides of his head. His flesh is rotting and he uses the spine of a human for a whip. His job is as a foreteller of death. Where he stops riding, a person is due to die. He will call out the persons name at which point they drop to the floor dead. There is no way to stop the Dullahan - all locks and gates open when he approaches. They don't like being watched either and will throw blood over anyone who dares to do so - this is also taken as a mark that they are among the next to die.

5. The Fetch

The Fetch is a supernatural double of a living person. You could have your own Fetch. They are like a doppelganger but with more sinister undertones. Their sightings are regarded as an open of impending death. If a person sees this dark double of themselves, its said to mean they are going to die. Sometimes The Fetch may even have a clue as to how that person will die - perhaps a bullet wound in the head or a slash across the chest. Either way, its not something you want to come across. The Fetch is said to appear ghostly or shadowy and may vanish down alleys or halls if followed.

4. Puca

According to Irish folklore, these are strange little creatures obsessed with causing as much havoc as possible. They visit farms and seaside communities to tear down fences and disturb the animals. The creepy part is that the legend says the Puca sometimes stands outside the farmhouse and calls the people outside by their name. If anyone steps out, the Puca will carry them away forever. There are stories of them being blood thirsty and vampire like creatures as well as ones that describe them as man eating beings, hunting down, killing and eating their victims.

3. The Alp-Luachra

This creature is also known as the joint eater. Don't worry, it doesnt eat your joints - but this creature does something just as strange. Its said to be a newt like creature that preys on people who fall asleep near rivers or streams. It jumps down their throat and lives in their stomach so that it can eat the victims food. In the collection of folk tales called Beside the Fire, a farmer who was starving from an Alp-luachra found a way to get rid of the creature. He ate large amounts of salted meat until he could eat no more. Then he lay by a stream with his mouth open. The Alp-luachra were driven to thirst by all the salt and eventually, they all jumped out of the man and into the water.

2. The Black Cat of Killakee House

There is said to be a beast that wanders the forests of County Dublin around the old Killakee House. The animal has been sighted for centuries and people say its supernatural. For many people though, this was nothing more than  superstition. That was until 1968 when a young couple bought the Killakee house and started renovating it. The hired workers reported strange noises and events and a big black cat with demonic eyes that haunted them. It would appear and disappear in a moment. The owners didnt believe them until they saw it too - standing in the hallways, staring and snarling. The couple got a priest to perform and exorcism on the house which seemed to rid it of the beast for a while. Then a group of actors held a seance in the house which brought the black cat back with many swearing it still prowls there to this day.

1. The Sluagh

Some say these spectral creatures are demons but a closer term would be malicious spirits. The Slaugh are dead sinners who have been doomed to spend an eternity hunting for the souls of people who are dying. According to Irish Folklore, they come from the west, flying like a flock of birds, trying to enter a house where they sense someone is dying in order to steal their soul and rob them of a happy afterlife. It was said that many family would actually shut their west facing windows at all time to keep the Sluagh out of them homes. Some folklore experts have compared this to the Wild Hunt, a European folktale about ghostly hounds or spirits traveling around in packs foretelling of death and disaster.

Top 10 Scary Hospital Urban Legends

Hospitals can be a scary place to be at the best of times, but these horrifying stories make them like truly terrifying places best avoided. To make matters worse, some digging and some of these urban legends have turned out to be true.

10. In Germany
Legend has it that an abandoned hospital is over run by zombies. The Kinderkrankenhaus on the outskirts of Berlin is pretty terrifying a) because it is an abandoned Children’s hospital and B because it might be infested by brain sucking zombies. Frim the outside, the the building in the woods has been battered by the elements and ransacked by vandals. Who knows what is going on on the inside….Urban legend in the nearby town is that the old abandoned hospital is home to a number of zombies waiting to strike. Those who dare visit the location have taken some terrifying pictures if the interior and exterior. On the flip side, though, some of the graffiti is pretty cool. My question is, are they regular zombies, or child zombies?

9. Killed By Death
Killed by death is an urban legend that focuses on sick kids in a childrens hospital. Children are admitted to the hospital with severe flulike symptoms and see a creepy, nightmarish monster stalking the corridors at night. Those still ill with the flu are taken, one by one at night by the Kindestod, which means the Childs Death in German. The Kindestod sucks out the kids souls, leaving them to die prematurely, with doctors thinking it was their weak immune systems failing to fight off the flu. Only people with the flu can see the monster, leaving healthy people to think the kids are delirious when they complain of seeing the beast. It turns out that while this creepy child killing monster seems like the stuff of Urban legends, after some digging, I found it was an adapted creepypasta from a 1998 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

8. Red Wrist Bands
The wristband story is a creepypasta about a doctor who sees dead people. Basically the story goes that a Doctor Ulman was working as a surgeon and unfortunately could not save the life of one of his patients. As a signifier that this patient was dead, Dr Ulman placed a Red wristband on the deceased. After cleaning up and taking a moment, Dr Ulman hopped in the hospital elevator to take a break in the cafeteria. As he was heading down, a woman in a hospital white gown hopped in after him. Ever the gent, Ulman asked which floor the woman was heading to. She said she was expected in the morgue. Baffled, Dr Ulman noticed another passenger try to jump in the elevator, but miss as the doors closed in his face. Ulman locked eyes with the man before the doors shut. He went white. The lady asked what was wrong. He said that he thought the man was a patient who had just died. The woman asked how he could be sure, and Dr Ulman said that he was wearing a red wristband. The woman smiled and held up her arm, and said…like this one? The elevator went down.

7. You should never go to a hospital at the beginning of a fiscal year because you’ll get hurt. Ooh, fiscal year….talk sexy to me. No, seriously though, this is actually an urban legend. People think that if they go to a hospital, particularly a training hospital, they are likely to suffer an injury at the hands of doctors because the new fiscal year marks a new intake of junior doctors who are inexperienced. While there is some slight evidence to back this up, health care providers insist this is an urban legend.

6. Babies Switched
At Birth We have all heard the urban legend of two babies born in the same hospital getting switched at birth, right? They are then brought up by the wrong families and on their 18th birthday they find out they were actually switched? It’s a classic, there was even a TV series about it on ABC. Well, this actually does happen! How scary would it be to realise you were actually from a whole other family entirely and you could have had a very different life? This happened to Doris Gruenwald, born in 1990. 27 years later, following a routine blood test, she found out that she had been given to the wrong family. Speaking to local news outlets, she said: My whole body started shaking... It was like the ground under my feet disappeared. The woman from Australia took University Hospital Graz to court, and the medical facility was ordered to pay 90 thousand euros in damages. This is a crazy story….

5. Toxic Blood Infects Hospital
On a cold February evening in 1994, a 31 year old women, Gloria Ramirez, visited a hospital in Riverside California. The woman was ill and had been previously diagnosed with cervical cancer. The woman had some unusual symptoms…her heart was beating rapidly, he blood pressure plummeting and she was taking slow shallow breaths. She was injected with valium and other drugs to sedate her. When she was stripped of her clothes, they noticed her body was covered in an oily sheen and there was a garlicy odor coming from her mouth. When her blood was taken, they noticed it smelled very strongly of ammonia. The medics who had taken her blood became queasy, then fainted.

One stopped breathing for several minutes and another shook uncontrollably, losing the feeling in their limbs. It seems that Ramirez was releasing a toxicity. 23 of the 37 emergency room staff members on shift that day experienced symptoms, 5 were hospitalized and one spent two weeks in intensive care for apnea. Ramirez died that evening and there was no official explanation from Livermore investigators for the bouts of illness on the ward. Weirdly enough,this Urban Legend seems to actually be true – there are news articles and studies about the incident. Well, this urban legend turned out to be true.

4. Dr Death
Dr Death is the legend of a seemingly lovely family doctor who would charm the elderly within his care. Secretly though, he was convincing the vulnerable OAPs to write him into their Wills, then slowly killing them off with lethal drug combinations. When they died, he recorded their deaths as old age and would pocket their money. Sounds like a murderous creepypasta, but it is true. In the late 90s in South Manchester , UK, Linda Reynolds of Donneybrook Surgery expressed concerns about the high mortality rate of Dr Harold Shipman’s patients.

Police were alerted, but unable to initially gather enough evidence. 6 months after the initial claims, Police found sufficient evidence that Dr Shipman was spiking his elderly patients with Diamorphine and forging their wills. In total, Harold Shipman is thought to have killed over 215 patients between 1975 and 1998. The majority of his victims were woman, although he did kill some men. The majority of the victims were over the age of 75. The youngest was in their 40s.

3. The Legend of the Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital
You could not pay me to go here….you literally could not. This is an old, abandoned mental asylum in New Zealand of all places. Staff were nasty to patients, with many abuse claims and even murder claims coming from relatives of those admitted to the facility. Interestingly, despite many patients dying in their stay at Kingseat, it is said by locals that more staff members and nurses died than any of them.

There are suggestions that something in the place led people to suicide. Now the building is abandoned, which makes it even creepier. I have no idea why you would ever visit, but if you did, you can still see the scratch marks on the wall where patients tried to claw their way out of their rooms. That is not all you might find, either. It seems that the building has been at the centre of paranormal investigations for years, with local legend saying the building is haunted by as many as 100 ghosts, most famously the ghost of a grey looking nurse. Get me awaaaay from there.

2. The Russian Sleep Experiment
The Russian Sleep Experiment was a hospital experiment that was said to have taken place in Soviet Russia on political prisoners during world war 2. Russian doctors were reportedly fascinated by the reason why people sleep and the use of sleep deprivation as torture. Prisoners were told they would be freed if they took place in a 30 day experiment. Allegedly, a special gas was used by medics to keep patients awake. For five days, patients were seemingly okayish, but after the five day mark, they became increasingly paranoid and erratic.

After 9 days they started screaming until they tore their vocal chords. Then patients began smearing their faeces over the room they were in. After 14 days, the captives became very quiet and claimed they no longer wanted to be free. In this time, one of the test subjects had passed away. When the gas was turned off that was keeping them from sleeping, the remaining patients screamed that they wanted the gas back on. They had torn muscle and skin from their bodies, with some organs even being removed and thrown on the floor.

Eventually the patients could no longer be described as human or even human looking. When asked what they were, one of the subjects smiled and said We are you. We are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every moment in your deepest animal mind. We are what you hide from in your beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread.". Rhiiiiiight. This is probably just an urban legend, but honestly who knows when it comes to war crimes committed by Soviet Russia. Finally at number one, a disgusting and scary urban legend that turns out is the truth.

1. Chinese Hospitals Sell Dead Babies to Eat
The rumour was that a number of hospitals in China were selling aborted child foetuses as Chinese people believed that eating the will boost stamina and sexual health. This, unfortunately, is true. It was even reported that surgeons were eating the foetuses themselves. In 2011, South Korean Customs seized 17 thousand pills containing powdered baby flesh that had been smuggled in from China. There was a documentary made about the practice that aired in South Korea that showed doctors refrigerating dead babies. An undercover reporter learned that corrupt medics at hospitals are selling the dead babies on to paying customers who want to eat the babies for their health. One consumer said that he would cook the foetuses in a soup with ginger and orange peel.

5. The Man Who Spoke With God
Picture this scene: The year is 1983. A group of religious scientists have come up with an interesting new theory that any human brain untroubled by stimuli would be able to sense the presence of God. Finding a willing volunteer, an old man with a terminal illness, they painstakingly seal off his nerve endings. Then they sit back and wait. What happened next is like H.P Lovecraft's worst nightmare. For a couple of days, the old man whispered about his deteriorating state of mind. On the fourth day, he claimed to hear distant voices. On the sixth, his dead wife began speaking to him.

Then things really went downhill. As the days passed, the voices of the dead began to grow louder, more hostile. They became angry, mocking, and started to tell the man things nobody should ever have to hear. According to the legend, the man began to scream and tear at his unseeing eyes, shrieking no heaven, no forgiveness, over and over and over. Finally he began to hysterically bite at his own flesh, saying he'd met God and he has abandoned us. Luckily, the tale is nothing more than a particularly spine-chilling example of an urban legend. But it's creepy enough to have utterly freaked some people out, and now seems to periodically resurface whenever the Internet is in need of some gut-wrenching terror.

4. Farmer John's Suicide
The story goes that the owner of a meat-packing plant woke up one day to find his kids missing. With the help of his brother, the two scoured the farm but could find no trace of the missing kids. After a few hours they called in the police, who made a horrifying discovery. The stuff coming out the meat grinder that day was human flesh, pulped and ground down to goo. Realizing this could only be his missing kids, the owner retreated to the plant's boiler room and quietly hanged himself.

Twenty years after the kids were murdered, workers at the plant stumbled across a terrifying scene. The brother of the former owner had been strung up in the boiler room, the words I did it carved across his chest. At the same time, visitors to the town cemetery reported that the soil above the owner's grave had been disturbed sometime in the night. Fast forward to the present, and it's said that you can see the ghosts of the two children falling into the grinder every October, while on Halloween the two hanged men make their way back to the boiler room.

3. The Staring Video
It's a video of a man looking into a camera without expression for roughly two minutes. It's been up on YouTube without comment and seen by hundreds of people. Known as the "Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv" video, the legend goes that it was pulled by YouTube in the early days after they realized its effects. According to the story, those who watched through to the end would see the expressionless man smile an evil smile.

After that they'd lose it. People were said to have clawed their own eyes out after seeing the whole video. Others were said to have taken knives and hacked their own arms up. Yet others were supposed to have killed themselves. It is said that nobody can get even 45 seconds in without screaming, and to go any further is to sacrifice the last shreds of your sanity. At least, that's the story. In reality, the video is of a guy called Bryan Cortez and you can see him today looking suitably non-demonic and friendly.

2. The Suicide Portrait
A few years back, an internet rumor surfaced about the suicide of a young Japanese girl. Shortly before killing herself, the teen had drawn a self-portrait, which she then posted online. Curious to see this slice of suicide memorabilia, a number of Korean forums picked up the image and began re-posting it. That's where things got weird. Users had a hard time looking away from this melancholy picture. Some began re-posting it time and time again, saying that its eyes were drawing them in.

Others noticed that if you stared at the picture for any length of time, it began to alter subtly, the faintest trace of a smile surfacing around the dead girl's mouth. Yet others reported feelings of intense sadness after seeing it. It is said that one or two even killed themselves. It is now thought that anyone who spends too long looking at the image runs the risk of falling into this same deadly obsession. At least it would be, if the original artist hadn't found out about this rumor and posted a fed-up message on his website, debunking the whole thing.

1. Mickey Mouse In Hell
The creepy "lost episod" is a whole sub genre of modern urban legend. But none has ever been quite so twisted as the legend that started them all: the story of the lost Mickey Mouse cartoon. According to the legend, this cartoon is nothing special. It features a black and white Mickey walking past a repeating background, white noise playing on the soundtrack. At two minutes in it cuts to black and that's it. Wait until the sixth minute, and the cartoon is meant to reappear. Only now the white noise has been replaced by the distant murmur of voices. The background Mickey was walking against has begun to distort in ways painful for the human eye to see, and Mickey himself is smirking unpleasantly.

From then on, the cartoon supposedly becomes a nightmare. A scream starts to rise up on the soundtrack as Mickey himself seems to decay, his eyeballs falling out and his grin getting ever wider. Impossible colors begin flickering across the screen, burning rubble rises in the background, and then it is said that nobody knows what happens next. The only Disney employee to ever watch to the end committed suicide shortly after. All he left was a note describing the final frame: a piece of Russian text that translates as "the sights of hell bring its viewers back in." And now, it is somewhere out there on the Internet, waiting for you to find it.

5. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was and Iranian religious leader for a decade beginning in 1979. He had led the Iranian Revolution during which up to sixty thousand people were killed. The doctrine of the Shia Islamic Law was incredible strict, enforcing specific dress codes and eliminating equal rights. Brutal punishments were administered for breaking the rules. People were sent to prison and tortured just for listening to music. Anyone caught sharing a kiss in public was given one hundred lashes.

Those who chose not to believe in Allah were tortured and murdered by shooting, hanging, gassing, stabbing, stoning or burning. Anyone caught stealing would have a hand amputated, people were blinded and women's faces were slashed or damaged with acid. During the Iranian Massacres of 1988, everyone who was serving time in prison was killed. Over five months more than thirty thousand people lost their lives, including children who were hung from cranes. Khomeini kept fifty two American nationals hostage. Some were imprisoned for more than four hundred days, some spent six years in captivity. The hostages were blindfolded for their entire imprisonment.

Khomeini wasn't content with just ruling Iran, he had ambitions to conquer the Middle East. Saddam Hussein decided to attack first and between one and two million people were killed during the Iran Iraq war. Children were sent to fight by Khomeini. Saddam Hussein attempted peace talks but to no avail. The economy of Iran crashed and up to a million Iranian people died during this time. Khomeini's aggression towards the US is thought to have been the beginning of terrorist thinking, inspiring groups such as Al Qaeda. He is also thought to have inspired the Islamic Holy War during which over two million people died. In 1989 Khomeini lost his own fight, with cancer.

4. Delphine LaLaurie
When Delphine LaLaurie's New Orleans house caught fire in 1834, the emergency services who attended the scene made some very disturbing discoveries.Two people who were clearly being kept as slaves were found inside the house, chained up to the stove in the kitchen. Both were found to have had terrible injuries afflicted upon them during their life. But this was just the start. Upstairs in the attic more than twelve bodies were found, all of them chained to the floor or the walls.

They bore the disfigurement of serious abuse, having suffered a range of medical experiments conducted upon them by LaLaurie. She had trialled sex change surgery, had broken limbs and reset them in odd positions, performed amputations and taken flesh samples. Some of her victims had had their mouths sewn up, resulting in them dying of starvation. There were some victims who had had their hands attached to other parts of their bodies. LaLaurie never paid for her crimes as she escaped and went into hiding.

3. Beverly Allitt Nurse
Beverley Gail Allitt is said to be amongst the top ten most evil women of all time. Dubbed the Angel of Death, she killed four children and tried to kill another three. And that's not all, she also caused grievous bodily harm to another six. These terrible deeds were committed in 1991 whilst Allit was working in a children's hospital ward in Lincolnshire. It was found that two of the children had been given massive overdoses of insulin whilst another child was found to have a big air bubble inside their body. How the other children were killed and injured remains uncertain. Allitt was sentenced to life in prison, thirteen times over, when she was put on trial in 1993. The judge emphasised that Allitt posed a serious threat to society and would probably reamin in jail for the rest of her life.

2. Adolf Hitler
The German Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, was the leader of Germany between 1933 and 1945. As a young man he had aspirations of becoming an artist but these were not realised when he failed to gain admittance to art school. He enlisted as a solider in the German army during the First World War. He was furious when Germany surrendered. After returning to Germany at the end of the war, Hitler began considering the role of the Jews in terms of the problems Germany was facing.

He blamed the Jews for everything and his bitterness developed into a belief that Jews were not human beings at all. He began to plan for the elimination of all of Europe's Jews. Part of this plan included the fulfilment of his ambition to control the entire world. Hitler believed that the power of persuasion could achieve anything and propaganda was a fundamental strategy in his plans. Hitler took to killing anyone who stood against him. He would experiment on hospital inpatients for new methods of killing people; one thing he trialled in this way was the use of carbon dioxide gas.

More than three hundred thousand people were killed due to Hitler's experiments. Hitler rounded up all of the Jews living in Germany and put them into concentration camps. Jews living in other countries were not safe from this threat and over ninety percent of Polish Jews died during this time. Those incarcerated in these prison camps were put to work. Some died from overwork whilst others were killed in the gas chambers. This wasn't the only way that Hitler killed the people in the camps. He also used a firing squad, death marches, the lethal injection, starvation, poisoning and medical experimentation.

Many people died from disease, starvation and exposure too. The Jewish people were forced to watch their friends and family die. The lives of millions of children were lost because of Hitler's breeding programme. Children were judged against the Nazi scale of perfection and those found to be lacking were executed. He wasn't loyal to friends and allies and would betray them without a second thought. Over eleven million people were killed as a direct result of Hitler's power.

This figure includes six million Jewish people, three million Polish people and another three million Russian people, seven hundred and fifty thousand Slavs, half a million gypsies, one hundred thousand people suffering from mental illness, another hundred thousand Freemasons, five thousand Jehovah's Witnesses and fifteen thousand homosexual people. In all, more than fifty million people died due to Hitler's actions. He died in 1945 when he commit suicide after taking cyanide poisoning then shooting himself.

1. Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin was the dictator at the helm of the Soviet Union for thirty-one years, between 1922 and 1953. Prior to his appointment to government, he had been an assassin, a bank robber and an agitator. It took him many years to progress to his place in power and he turned into a ruthless, aggressive, vengeful dictator who was ruled by his paranoia, bringing terror, violence and murder to his country. Those who crossed him were put to death so woe betide anyone who attempted to spy on him or anger him in any way. Anyone who voted against him suffered the same fate.

His ambition was to promote the Soviet Union to an industrial superpower but in working towards this goal many, many people were killed. Soviet citizens were forced into slave labour, many literally being worked to death. Enormous industrial schemes were established and became a source of perhaps millions of people's misery. Stalin's name appears on tens of thousands of death warrants. The only way to escape Stalin's brutality was to adhere to his word entirely. Anyone who spoke against him, who displayed independence or intelligence, was subjected to torture, imprisonment or murdered.

Family made no difference to Stalin and he was as likely to murder his supporters families as he was his enemies; in fact, he murdered the parents of a girl he had made a favourite of. She believed that he extended his love for her to her family, but she was wrong. He is even said to have had wives of his friends killed. Stalin's family didn't escape his ruthlessness either. He sent his daughter's boyfriend into exile and his wife commit suicide in order to escape his horrific treatment.

When his son was captured and put into a Nazi concentration camp, Stalin would not make a trade for his release; his son died in the camp. The means of murder were varied and brutal: it's said that Stalin even had people killed with ice picks. It wasn't only by brute force that people lost their lives. During Stalin's time in power, around ten million people starved to death. He is known to have said that an individual death can be regarded as a tragedy but in high numbers deaths are merely a statistic.

Stalin showed no respect for those who were fighting for his country during the Second World War, even having Soviet soldiers killed. Prisoners were released in order to join the army; when they returned from war, even if they were injured, they were thrown back in prison. He was just as brutal to people from other countries with hundreds of thousands of foreigners raped, tortured and murdered; one and a half million women from Germany were raped by Stalin's men. Stalin regularly used mustard gas explosives to kill large numbers of people. His aim was for his country to become as strong as America, with the ultimate goal being to take on the United States. He was responsible for the deaths of up to sixty million people. He lived until 1953 when he died after having a stroke.

5 Unsolved Mysteries With Strange Writteb Clues
5. John Hill
Ottumwa is a small city in southern Iowa and it is home to a disturbing unsolved mystery. Early on the morning of November of 22, 1976, two men walked into the Ottumwa Launderette and in a small room they found the dead body of the 51 year old owner of the launderette John Hill. He had been stabbed multiple times and shot. The police were called to the scene and they found a .25 caliber handgun on the floor near Hill's body.

Near the entrance of the launderette the police found five bullet holes. The police concluded that Hill died as a result of a robbery gone wrong. Hill fired his gun five times at the robber and missed with each shot. The robber attacked Hill stabbing and shooting him. The police said that it was a long drawn-out struggle. Then the killer did something really unusual.

Despite having multiple gunshots go off, which would have drawn a lot of attention, the killer took the time to write something in the victim's blood at the crime scene. It either said black or lack and then the second word was older. The police are unsure what the words refer to or their significance. There were two suspects in the case who are a couple, but neither were charged because they had strong alibis. Unfortunately the case has never been solved and Hill's family is still looking for answers as to who is responsible for his brutal and senseless murder.

4. Tracey Neilson
After a day of classes at Medical School on January 5, 1981, Jeff Neilson returned home to the apartment that he shared with his wife of five months, Tracy Nielsen, in Moore Oklahoma It was Tracey's birthday, she had turned 21. When Jeff got to the apartment he found the door unlocked. Inside the apartment, he found Tracy on the bed. She was lying face up. Her throat had been slit and she had been stabbed multiple times in the chest. During the police investigation they were quickly able to rule Jeff out as a suspect. What the police learned is that on the morning of her birthday, Tracy ran around and did some errands.

Then a neighbor saw Tracy finishing up her chores around the apartment at about noon. During the afternoon her friends and family have been calling to wish her a happy birthday but no one answered the phone. The medical examiner placed her time of death at some time around noon. She had not been sexually assaulted. There was no evidence of a break-in and there was no signs of a struggle inside the apartment. Robbery doesn't appear to be a motive because there was only one item missing from the apartment. It was a one inch by four inch keychain that Tracy used, which had her name on it.

The police think that the killer took it with him as a souvenir. The killer left several clues in the apartment, notably a single fingerprint but unfortunately no match to it has ever been found. The second clue is a cable ticket book from Southwestern Bell for cable repair, which may explain how the killer got into the apartment without breaking in or forcing his way in because Tracy may have let him in since he was a repairman.

The last ticket in the book lists Tracy's address as the service address Whoever filled out the ticket said that the work was completed and then they signed or initialed it at the bottom. The ticket said that the work was finished at 11:51 a.m. on the day of the murder. The police and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are hoping that someone will recognize the signature or the handwriting Since the murder the police have followed up on 1500 leads, but after 35 years they are no closer to figuring out who killed Tracy Nielsen on her 21st birthday.

3. Gary Grant Jr.
January 12 1984, was a Thursday, but 7-year-old Gary Grant Jr. of Atlantic City, New Jersey, had the day off of school because there was a teacher conference. Gary left his house at about 2:30 in the afternoon and he told his mother that he had an appointment. His mother never thought to ask what he meant by appointment. Gary was supposed to return home by four o'clock and when he didn't, his mother called the police His neighborhood was searched and two days after he went missing his body was found two blocks from his house in the vacant lot.

The 7-year-old had been bludgeoned to death with a metal pipe. The last person seen with gary was his 12-year old friend Carl Mason, whose nickname was "Boo." The police interviewed Carl, who has developmental disability and was smaller than Gary, without a guardian or a lawyer present and he confessed to the murder. He was arrested and sent to juvenile detention. Once he was incarcerated Carl said that he was innocent.

He was given two polygraph tests; one was inconclusive and the other showed that he was telling the truth about being innocent. The judge eventually threw out the confession and Carl was released. Not long afterwards, the investigation into Gary's murder frosted over. This was especially tough on Gary Grant Sr., who was a police officer with the Atlantic City Police Department.

On January 4, 1986, a message was found scrawled on the side of an Atlantic City police car. It read: "Gary Grant's dead. I am living. Another will die on January 12th if all goes right." January 12th was the second anniversary of Gary's murder. Luckily, January 12th, came and went and no one was murdered in Atlantic City on that day. A few weeks later, a second message was found. This time it was scratched onto a sidewalk. It said: "Gary Grant Jr. lives. I still killed him. Son of the pig officer. Payback is a M.F."

The last message led to speculation that grant may have been killed and his payback against his father because he arrested somebody. However, that theory has never been proven. In fact, to this day the police are uncertain if the killer actually wrote the messages or if they were just a horrible prank. The case has sat cold ever since. The new clue emerged in 2006. Gary Grant senior was converting some audio tapes to mp3 files when he came across one that was labeled phone calls.

On the audiotape, he heard the following call that was made to the 911 dispatch on March 8, 1986, weeks after the messages were found. This wasn't the only mysterious phone call on the audiotape A few weeks after the bizarre confession, the 911 dispatch received a second strange phone call regarding the murder of Gary Grant. The caller didn't identify themselves but they accused the man of killing Gary because his father was a cop. The man's name was never made public because he was never charged.

Gary Grant Sr. knows the man, but says that he never had a problem with him. We should also point out that the accused man was arrested in 2011 for sexual contact with a child under the age of five and child endangerment. He ended up pleading guilty to child endangerment in 2013. Again, it is unclear at the calls are genuine or just a disturbing prank. Tragically, despite his father conducting his own investigation the murder of Gary Grant Jr. remains unsolved.

2. The Freeway Phantom
The evening of April 25th, 1971, was a warm one in Prince George's County, Maryland, and it was just an ordinary Sunday for 13-year-old Carol Spinks and her family. Around dinnertime Carol's older sister asked her to walk to the 7-Eleven, which was about a half a mile away from the family's home to pick up some TV dinners, bread and soft drinks Carol made it to the store and purchased her items but then she disappeared on her way home. Her body was found six days later on a grassy embankment next to a highway.

A few months later on the morning of July 8, 16-year-old Darleina Johnson, who lived a few blocks away from Carol, left her home to go to her summer job at a local recreation center. Sadly, she never made it to work. Her body was found 11 days after she went missing. She had been dumped about 15 feet away from where Carroll's body was found. 19 days after Darlenia disappeared 10-year-old Brenda Crockett was sent to the store by her mother.

When she didn't return home her family searched the neighborhood for her. Three hours after Brenda left for the store, her, 7-year-old sister was at home and the phone rang. She answered it and it was Brenda. She was crying. She said that a white man picked her up and she was heading home in the cab. She also said that she thought she was in Virginia. she then hung up the phone quickly. Minutes later the phone rang again.

Brenda's mother's boyfriend answered it this time. Again it was Brenda calling. She repeated what she told her sister and then she added that she was alone in the house with a man. The boyfriend told Brenda to put the man on the phone to tell him where she was and he'd come get her. Brenda then asked, "Did my mother see me?" The boyfriend responded, "How could she see you when you're in Virginia? Tell the man to come to the phone."

The boyfriend then heard the sound of heavy footsteps and Brenda said "I'll see you..." And then the line went dead. Hours later Brenda's body was found along the highway in Prince George's County. Her body wasn't hidden like the first two victims. She had been raped and strangled to death. A scarf was tied around her neck. The police think that the killer made Brenda call her home to give them false information to throw investigators off his track.

On October 8, 12 year old Nenomoshia Yates went missing while walking home from the store in Prince George's County Her corpse was found dumped along the side of the road just hours after she went missing She had been raped and strangled Then around 10:25 on November 15, 18 year-old Brenda Woodward was seen getting off the bus to transfer to another one Her body was found near an access ramp early the next morning. She had been strangled and stabbed.

Her coat was then laid gently over her body in her coat pocket there was a note that said: A handwriting analysis was performed on the note and the handwriting expert said that the note was written by Brenda herself; meaning the Phantom dictated the note to her. At this point the FBI was called in and they got thousands of tips, but none of the tips led anywhere. Around the same time that the FBI got involved the killer took a hiatus. But then on September 5, 1972, he popped back up again On that day, witnesses saw 17-year-old Diane William heading home on the bus after visiting her boyfriend, but she never made it home she was found strangled to death off the side of the road hours after she was seen exiting the bus After the murder of Diane Williams the Freeway Phantom killings came to it end.

Over the course of two years he claimed at least six lives. All the girls were between the ages of 10 and 18 and all of them were african-american. The FBI continued to work on the case but then in 1974 they reassigned the agents that were working on the case because manpower was needed to investigate the Watergate scandal and the freeway phantom killings went cold. In the ensuing years cold-case investigators have continued to look into the string of murders.

One conclusion they drew, which is based on the areas where the girls were kidnapped and the locations where their bodies were dumped, that the Phantom's anchor spot is Congress Heights, which is a neighborhood in Washington DC, suggesting that he lived or worked in the area during the time of the murders. There have been several attempts to pull testable DNA from evidence left on the victims, but so far they have not been able to. They also found fibers from a green synthetic carpet on five of the six girls, however they have not been able to find the carpet that it belongs to.

Finally, something that may just be a total coincidence, but three of the six victims had the middle name Denise Over the years the police have had over 100 potential suspects. The strongest suspect is a man named Robert Askins. Before the freeway phantom murders he had been charged with murder three different times and he was convicted of one of them in 1938 proposing a prostitute with cyanide He was released 20 years later because of a legal technicality.

In 1977, Askins was arrested for raping a 24 year old woman in his house after the arrest the police searched his house. In his desk, they found his appellate court opinion and in one of the footnotes was the word "tantamount" However, there's no physical evidence tying Askins to the Freeway Phantom murders and he was never charged Askins ended up being found guilty of raping and kidnapping the 24 year old woman and he was sentenced to life in prison in the late 1970s He died in prison in 2010, at the age of 91, without ever confessing to the Freeway Phantom murders. The police are hoping that in the future some new technology will help them crack the case

1. Jeanne French, Elizabeth Short, Mimi Boomhower and Jean Spangler
February 10, 1947, was a Monday, and a construction worker on his way to work happened upon a woman's body in a field off of an isolated road in West Los Angeles. The body was identified as 45-year-old Jeanne French. When she was in her 30s, Jean was a pioneering female aviator, but in 1947, her glory days were long gone.

She was estranged from her fourth husband, Frank French who possibly suffered from PTSD, and was supposedly abusive. Jeanne herself was an alcoholic who liked to go out and party. On the night before her body was found, Jeanne was having dinner and drinks at a diner with two men During the meal she got up from the table and made a phone call. From the way she talked on the phone a waitress at the diner could tell that Jeanne was drunk on the phone Jeanne said, "don't bring a bottle the landlord doesn't allow it."

She then yelled over to the two men that she was dining with not to put any liquor in the car and not to take any liquor. About two hours later Jeanne was alone and she stopped in at a drive-in diner where she had coffee with the owner. She talked about her troubles and complained about her estranged husband Frank.

At 10:30, Jeanne was seen at a bar where she told the other patrons that she was going to commit her husband to the neuropsychiatric ward at the Veterans Hospital the following day Jeanne then made her way over to her estranged husband's rooming house. She asked him to come out with her and he turned her down. She hit him in the head with her purse and left. Next, Jeanne was seen at another drive-in diner with a man who had a dark complexion and was small to medium in size People remembered them because the man bragged about leaving a large tip.

After the diner, Jeanne and her friend were seen at a bar They were there from 1:30 until 2:00 when the bar closed as it closed. The bartender Jeanne arguing with her friend. When the bartender stepped out of the bar, he saw Jeanne and her friend get into an old beat-up sedan and they drove off into the night. Then, just hours later, James body was found in the field by the construction worker.

Jeanne had been viciously beaten and stomped. She had massive internal bleeding, her heart was punctured, her neck was broken. On her torso someone had written "F--- you B.D.and under it were the letters "T-E-X" The message was written in Jeanne's lipstick. The police and the media immediately knew what BD stood for. It stood for Black Dahlia.

Just four weeks before Jeanne French was beaten to death, 22-year-old Elizabeth Short's body was found in los angeles Short had been cut in half and her intestines had been removed. Her body was drained of blood, her skin was scrubbed, and her lips were slashed from ear to ear, making it look like she had a horrifying smile.

Like Jeanne French, Short had been dumped in the field. Supposedly Short also had something written on her body in lipstick. It was too small swear words. Eight days after Short's body was found, the story dropped from the front page and an editor at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner got a call from someone claiming to be the Black Dahlia Avenger The caller told the editor that it seemed like they were running out of material on the Black Dahlia murder, so he would send them some of Short's personal belongings, like her birth certificate and her address book.

Sure enough, a package arrived at the newspaper two days later which containing several personal items that belong to Short. A note was also included with the belongings indicating that a letter would follow Four letters were sent in all. They were all signed off as the Black Dahlia Avenger, but the police are unsure at the letters were from the killer or from someone who knew Short well enough, or who had access to her apartment, like a landlord.

The police were hesitant to say that the killings of Short and Jeanne branch were connected The victims did share similar physical features, but the methods of the murders were very different from one another Newspapers, on the other hand, thought that one person was responsible for both murders. Instead of focusing on the serial killer theory when investigating Jean French's murder, the police immediately looked at the most likely culprit in any murder - the romantic partner of the victim.

After all, Frank did seem like a plausible suspect. The couple did have a volatile relationship and Frank did see her on a night that she died. Frank's swore that he had nothing to do with the murder and he took a lie detector test to prove it. He ultimately passed the polygraph test. The police interviewed Jeanne's son and he said that Frank had tolerated a lot from his mother and that she was more than capable of getting herself into trouble.

After that, Frank was dropped as a suspect. However, without Frank the police were out of suspects. Nothing happened with the case for two years. But then two years later, there was another odd case that happened in Los Angeles that may or may not be related to the murders of Jean French and Elizabeth Short.

On August 18, 1949, a friend talked to 48 year old Mimi Boomhower over the phone sometime between seven o'clock and eight o'clock p.m. The call was upbeat and the women talked about an upcoming social event. However that day was the sixth anniversary of Boomhower's husband's death. Later that night, the police were summoned to her upscale house. The front door was open her lights were on and her car was in her garage.

Inside the house there was a salad on the table that Boomhower didn't eat, there was fresh food in the kitchen, and a dress that had recently been worn was lying on the bed. The house showed no signs of a struggle and nothing was out of place. However, the 48 year old widow was nowhere to be found. The immediate conclusion was that Boomhower who was having financial problems committed suicide.

In fact, on the night that she disappeared she was supposed to meet an unidentified man at her house. She was hoping that the man would be interested in purchasing the house. Boomhower's friends and family said that she seemed happy with her life, and was looking forward to upcoming social events so they thought it was unlikely that she would have killed herself Five days after she went missing her purse was found in a telephone booth in a supermarket in Los Angeles.

Nothing appeared to be missing from her purse but written on its side big letters was: "Police Department found this on the beach on Thursday." Thursday was the night that Boomhower disappeared. The purse didn't show any traces of seawater or sands weeks. After Boomhauer disappeared from her house, another woman in Los Angeles disappeared.

26 year old Jean Spangler was an actress that had bit parts in movies and she had recently acquired a powerful agents. On October 7, 1949 she walked out of her front door to go to the farmers market and she never returned home. Two days later, her purse was found at the entrance to a nearby park. One strap had been ripped and inside the purse was a note that read: The police looked into her disappearance and discovered that Spangler was three months pregnant leading to speculation that Dr. Scott was an abortionist.

However, they were never able to find out the true identity of Dr. Scott. Rhe police were also unsure who Kirk was and then they received a rather unusual phone call from movie star Kirk Douglas. He was on vacation and called specifically to tell the police that he wasn't the Kirk in the letter. The police thought that this was suspicious because they never considered him to be the Kirk in the letter. Because of the bizarre call, the police considered Douglas a suspect, and then they discover that Spangler had recently acted in a movie that had yet to be a release, which starred Kirk Douglas, However, Kirk Douglas was eventually cleared in the disappearance.

The bodies of Mimi Boomhower and Jean Spangler have never been found. Newspapers at the time thought that the murders and the disappearances were all connected, but the LAPD weren't convinced. Unfortunately, the LAPD never brought anyone to justice for any of the crimes. However, there is at least one former LAPD homicide detective who thinks that the crimes are all connected, but he didn't join the force until decades after the murders and disappearances Steve Hodel, who is now retired from the LAPD, believes that his father who was an unusual and sadistic doctor named George Hill Hodel is responsible for the four crimes plus five other murders.

George Hodel was on the police's radar and he was a suspect in the Elizabeth Short murder because of an incident that happened in 1945. His secretary died of a drug overdose, but the police thought that Dr. Hodel had killed her to cover up some financial fraud. The police weren't able to prove anything conclusively and Dr. Hodel was never charged.

After his father died in 1999, he wrote several books on the Black Dahlia murder arguing that his father is the real killer. For his investigation, he had the handwriting on Boomhower's purse compared to his father's handwriting, and the examiner said that was highly probable that it was the same handwriting. The theory of George Hodel being the murder of Short and the other women is still controversial. It is even unclear if one person is responsible for all the murders and the disappearances. Unfortunately, there's a good chance that these cases may never be solved.

10 Creepy Urban Legends From Around the World
1. Meat Is Murder (Germany)
The legend goes that in post-war Berlin a woman who was walking through a crowd one day saw a blind man struggling. She offered to help him. He told her he was trying to deliver a letter - would she take it for him? It was on the way she was heading, so she said 'sure'. She set off with the letter, but remembered to check and see if the blind man was doing okay. She caught sight of him without his glasses and cane, hurrying down an alley. Feeling suspicious, she went to the police. When they went to the address on the letter she'd been given, they found bags of human flesh. The letter itself read: "This is today's serving". 1947 was known as the "Year of Hunger' in Germany, a country recently decimated by World War Two. People avoided starvation by eating what they could find: dogs, cats, rats, frogs, snails, as this rumor attests to, people.

2. The Well To Hell (Russia)
In 1984 a team of Russian scientists drilled deeper than ever before into the Earth's crust. It was on a remote peninsula in Northern Russia that hell was purportedly discovered, 12 kilometers below the surface. Supposeedly they through a point that reached 2000 degrees when the drill started sspinning strangely. They lowered their microphones in to take measurements and listened. It was then that they heard thousands of human voices, all screaming in agony. Were they souls trapped in hell? An explosion followed and a winged devil burst from the hole in the ground, killing 13 of the workers.
The story was reported around the world, but originated with a Christian group in Finland that heard of the experimental drilling. As might be expected, this is an exaggeration that has compounded over the years.

3. The Crying Boy (UK)
In 1985 The Sun newspaper in Britain printed a story title 'Blazing Curse of the Crying Boy'. The Crying Boy in question was a painting by Giovanni Bragolin that was found in perfect condtion after a house had been burned inside out. What's more, a firefighter at the scene said he knew of numerous other fires where the 'Crying Boy' painting had been. An investigation was carried out, but not before panicked members of the public began throwing their paintings onto bonfires. Over 50,000 versions of the cursed painting had been sold at this point. The investigators found that the paintings were varnished with flame retardant and so survived the fires. Although this didn't explain why no other varnished paintings were turning up.

4. The Lucifer Statue (Philippines)
Satan standing triumphant over Angel Michael makes for an odd sight in the Catholic Philippines. This is the grave of Don Simeon Bernardo, who ordered the statue be placed there on his death in 1934. Bernardo was tortured and, as a result, didn't have particularly rosy view of the world.

Locals say the statue was initially much smaller than it currently is and has been growing over the years. Others say that the demon files off at night so the wrought iron cage has been places around the statue to keep it from escaping. Phone to vandalism due to its irreligious nature the damaged statue was replaced by a slightly larger version in the 1970s and protected from abuse by a large cage.


5. Kaala Bandar (India)
Fifteen years ago mass hysteria swept the city of Delhi in India. During a 5-day period, the terrifying Kala Bandar roamed the streets. It pounced on people in the middle of the night, gouging their arms and necks. Described as 4 feet tall, with the horrifying face of a chimp and bearing iron claws, it was given the nickname the 'Monkey-Man of Delhi'. One man even fell to his death when he thought he saw the Monkey-Man. Another eyewitness described the terrifying situation: "The creature had its hands on my tights when I woke up. When my mother picked up a broomstick, it jumped out of the balcony". No monkey, man or monkey-man was ever caught, but the legend of Kala Bandar lives on, frightening children.

6. Under The Bed (USA)
This is a classic from the USA, a teenage girl is home alone and starts to receive strange messages on to her phone. She keeps ignoring the messages and carries on watching TV, putting them out of her mind. When the messages become more threatening, she phone the police, who trace the messages and tell her that they are coming from within the house! Just a story, right? Well in 2014 one 16-year-old girl started receiving some pretty scary texts. But she thought it was all a joke. She went to bed and just before she fell asleep she received the text: "I'm in your house!" The man had broken in and was hiding underneath her bed. Thankfully though, the police caught him in time.

7. Sacamantecas (Spain)
In Spanish, Sacamantecas means 'fat extractor' and is a kind of disguised monster or drifter that steals the fat from children to feed on. The myth is thought to have begun with Spain's first recorded serial killer, Manuel Blanco Romasanta. In the late 19th Century, Romasanta was convicted of killing 13 people. He rendered their fat in order to make high quality soap, which he then sold - along with the victims'clothes. Romasanta was only one of several people caught for selling human fat in this era and so the myth of the Sacamantecas was born and used to frighten children into behaving.

8. The Black Volga (Poland)
The Black Volga was a classic Russian car and signified wealth and status in the Soviet States during the Cold War. If one was ever seen stalking the Warsaw cith streets, people would flee because it was said that the people inside kidnapped children. No one ever saw who was driving them. One story suggested that the Soviet leader Brezhnev was mortally ill and requested the blood of children to keep his hold on the empire. The Volgas, which were associated with Soviet officials, went out to abduct children and drain them of their young blood. Other versions of the story described the blood being sold to wealthy Arabs to cure leukemia or spoke of vicars, nuns, Satanists, and even the devil driving the car and making children disappear.

9. El Chupacabra (Puerto Rico)
The goat-sucking, spiny and reptile-like Chupacabra was first seen in 1995 in Puerto Rico. This modern legendary beast is thought to drain the blood, vampire-like, from the livestock of Central and South American farmers. The uproar around the first sighting, in which 150 animals were killed, led to a year of weekly chupacabra hunts around Puerto Rico. To unearth the origin of this monster, Benjamin Radford of the Skeptical Inquirer tracked down Madelyne Tolentino, the woman who first reported seeing the creature. He had a hunch: there was a sci-fi B-Movie called 'Species' that featured a creature in the final act that was remarkably similar to her description.nWhat's more, Species was set in Puerto Rico, it came out in the weeks before the first Chupacabra sighting, and Madelyne Tolentino had watched it.

10. Kuchisake Onna (Japan)
Japan never fails to disappoint with creepy myths and ghosts. Kuchisake-Onna is the malicious spirit of a woman who wears a surgical mask. She appears and asks you: "Am I Pretty?" If you say no. she kills you on the spot. If you say yes, she removes her surgical mask to reveal the her mouth has been slit at the corners like The Joker, and then asks:"How about now?" If you say no, she cuts you in half. But if you say yes, she slits your mouth to look like hers. This tale caused widespread panic the the late 1970s. Schools arranged for students to walk home in groups because of their fear of being attracked by the ghost. There is even a rumor that a coroner's report from 1979 showed a woman who'd been hit by a car - in pursuit of a child who had her cheeks slit.

When you think of assassins, you probably think of agile, methodic, secretive characters that hide in the shadows, but as it turns out, some of the deadliest assassins of all time were not only not that secretive, but they had some of the craziest methods for carrying out their work that you will not believe. 10. Axe-Wielding Bear
17th century Swiss political leader Jorg Jenatsch's murder might be the most bearish assassination in history, pun intended. Jenatsch was a vicious Protestant leader with contempt for Spanish Catholics. He even pinned his political rival, Pompeius von Planta, to the floor and murdered him. Well flash forward 18 years to Carnival in the town of Chur. Jorg is drinking with his entourage, all in costume, so no one thinks twice about inviting a man in a bear costume, who's wielding an axe, to the revelry. Jorg tried to shake the bear's hand, but it was Rudolph von Planta, son of Pompeius in disguise, who shot his father's murderer in the stomach, and yet, Jenatsch still grabbed a giant candlestick and was able to fight back before eventually just dying. You know, I get it, the guy was in a bear costume, all snugly snugly, oh how cute, but the guy was holding an axe. Yep, nobody would have saw that coming, big sharp axe in your face.

9. Exotic Dancer Spy
World War I in Europe was an incredibly dangerous place to be, and in the rationale of the time, no place for a woman. But don't tell that to Margaretha MacLeod. This German intelligence officer is considered to be the greatest woman spy of the 20th century, but what's most interesting is that she went by the name Mata Hari, an exotic dancer who performed the dance of seven veils across Europe for English and French soldiers. MacLeod had a Dutch passport, so she could freely travel around wartime Europe, taking many high-ranking officers as lovers, many of whom she murdered before stealing military secrets. Hari ended up passing along her stolen intel to the Germans, that led to the deaths of almost 50,000 French soldiers. Even after she was caught as a spy and executed, she was a flirt, blowing a kiss at the firing squad before they shot her in 1917.

8. She-Tiger
Just like Hari, this person used her femininity and sexual prowess to fight for Basque independence from Spain in the 1980s. Known as La Tigresa, meaning The She-Tiger, she was a dedicated commando in the ETA, which stands for Basque Homeland in Liberty. She was responsible for 23 deaths. Specifically in 1986 at the age of just 20, La Tigresa set a car bomb in Madrid that killed 12 civil guards, another car bomb that killed five civilians, and seduced a police officer in order to gain access to police stations, before shooting him and another five police officers. In 2003, she was sentenced to 2,000 years in jail, but in 2011, apologized, and unbelievably was released early in June of 2017.

7. The Iceman
Richard Leonard Kuklinksi is considered America's most prolific contract killer, nicknamed The Iceman, because he froze his victims to hide the time of their death. He was only ever convicted for two murders, but claims to have killed up to 250 people over 30 years. That means one murder every six weeks. Kuklinski was the go-to killer for the Gambino mafia crime family, and unlike many other serial killers, he had no routine. Specifically, he would use guns, knives, bats, lumber, tire irons, ice picks, fire, cyanide, and even his bare fists, that he claimed he did for the exercise. Oh yes, getting a good one in today. The strangest thing is that when he wasn't murdering people for money, he was a family man living a quiet life in New Jersey. He was even an usher in his church, but his luck ran out in 1988 when he was sentenced to two life sentences, but freely spoke about his crimes up until his death in 2006.

6. The Superkiller
Agent 47 from the video game Hitman was actually inspired by Alexander Solonik, known as The Superkiller to the Russian criminal underworld. As a Soviet special forces member in East Berlin, he was tasked as an assassin of NATO diplomats. Believe it or not, what landed him in jail was not murders, but a rape conviction, and he ended up breaking out of the Siberian gulag and became a hit man for hire. He immediately started taking out high-ranking Russian mafia bosses, protected by armies of bodyguards, and he'd either do this as a sniper from great distances, or show up at nightclubs and kill his target and crew with dual pistols blaring. Police eventually caught up with him in 1995, but he ended up taking out five cops with a hidden machine gun before eventually returning to jail, escaping again, and created his own 50-strong assassin squad in Greece. Eventually he was found strangled in Athens in 1997. How appropriate, an assassin was assassinated, that's just irony.

5. Caesarea
In 1989, Palestinian political organization Hamas's chief weapons maker, Mahmoud al Habu, shot an Israeli soldier in cold blood. However, Israel had the last laugh in 2010, after Habu's body was discovered in the luxury Al Bustan Rotana in Dubai. His cause of death was a brain hemorrhage, which seemed improbable, so Dubai investigators looked into it. What they discovered was that 27 people from Massad's Caesarea unit flew in under different passports and left soon after. A German immigration attorney ended up discovering that multiple people in the Caesarea forged identities and documents to acquire German passports used to enter Dubai without notice. Seriously, these people must be really good at what they do, because I can't even bring a dang bottle of water through the airport, it's like I'm a criminal.

4. The Cartel Hit Man
Martin Corona's book Confessions of a Cartel Hit Man, released in July of 2017, details his violent life as an enforcer for the Arellano-Felix organization. It was this organization that inspired the movie Traffic, with their sadistic methods like Mexican stew, where they stuffed men into 55 gallon drums of hot lye. Corona was recruited to David Popeye Barin's death squad in 1993 after he saved Ramon Arellano's life fighting off 40 gunmen sent by the El Chapo Guzman, with a single AK-47. This guy's like an assassin Rambo. He tried to retaliate against El Chapo inside the Guadalajara Airport, but missed, but he still continued on to a long and lucrative murder for hire spree on both sides of the US-Mexico border. He would often wear disguises to trick his victims, like nerdy glasses, but in 2000, he turned on his bosses, working with the California Justice Department to dismantle the AFO.

3. The Camel
Jesus Ernesto Chavez Castillo's street gang, Barrio Azteca, were the Juarez drug cartel's go-to hit men until 2014. That was, until Castillo testified against his former boss, Arturo Gallegos Castrellon. Chavez confessed to 800 murders, but says that he lost count, and claims to have had a daily murder quota to instill fear in cops, politicians, and the people of Cuidad Juarez, the murder capital of the world. His confessions came after Mexican police allegedly tortured him with electric shocks to the testicles. But killing wasn't enough to please his boss, Castrellon, so he would often dismember and behead his victims, leaving their bodies in public places to make sure he made headlines. Unbelievably, since his imprisonment at the end of the drug cartel war, the Juarez murder rate dropped by two thirds.

2. The Political Assassin
Photographer Burhan Ozbilici's stark image of Mevlut Mert Altintas with a gun and his finger in the air while Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov lies dead beside him, was declared 2016's photo of the year. The Ankara Modern Arts Center was hosting an exhibition created by the Russian embassy on December 19th, 2016. Ambassador Karlov was a few minutes into his speech about improving strained Turkish-Russian relations when a man in a suit shot him nine times in the back, shouting "revenge for Syria and Aleppo." The gunman, who engaged in a 15-minute shootout with police before ultimately being killed, was Altintas. He was an off-duty member of the Ankara police riot squad and a member of the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda. Man, even police are assassins, you can't trust anybody.

1. The Lady Killers
Kim Jong Nam was a playboy living in exile when he was suddenly poisoned in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia on Valentine's Day 2016. His assassins were Indonesians Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, who sprayed the poison in his face, claiming it was a prank. The reason that they were so unsuspecting was because Miss Huong was wearing really casual clothing, specifically a sweater that said "LOL" on it. Well, getting sprayed in the face with a V.X. nerve agent isn't exactly LOL. It's more like OMG.

10. Delphine LaLaurie

Perhaps the real inspiration for American Horror Story season three, Delphine LaLaurie inspired her slaves to commit suicide. The reason? They were trying to get away from her lucid torture schemes. LaLaurie would keep droves of slaves on the brink of death and starvation, seemingly for her own enjoyment. Sadly, LaLaurie was never arrested, and although rumors of her atrocities run rampant throughout New Orleans, she never suffered the same way she treated those around her.

9. Belle Sorensen Gunness

No, it’s probably not because gun is in her name, or the fact that her children look terrified in every family photo. In what can only be described as ‘gold digging pioneering’, Belle would murder family members for money. After murdering her husband and two of her very own children and cashing in on their life insurance, she moved to Indiana. There, she dropped a meat grinder on her next husband’s head—and then advertised in the paper that she was looking for yet another husband. In gold digging irony, suitors rushed to the ever increasingly wealthy Belle, who murdered them all. Eventually, her whole estate burned to the ground, killing her children and revealing dozens of corpses for police to find. The weird part was, her teeth were found in the ashes—but her body wasn’t.

8. Amy Archer’s Murder House

Amy Archer-Gilligan murdered the elderly for fun. It’s horrible to hear out loud, but listen to this: in the early 1900’s Archer’s Connecticut home for the Elderly and Infirm saw 60 deaths, not including the deaths of several husbands. Eventually, family and friends of the deceased elderly caught on that Archer was feeding poison to her patients and was sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder. She died in 1962 in an insane asylum. Asylum sounds too nice for someone like that.

7. Lavinia Fisher

Notoriously famed as the first American serial killer, and perhaps the inspiration for American Horror Story season five, Lavinia Fisher and her husband ran a hotel that—can you guess?—made fun out of murdering guests. What started as murder and robbery turned into an all-out killing spree. It took local police years to nail Lavinia and her husband for their crimes, and the two were eventually sentenced to death in 1820.

6. Jane Toppan

The further we get down this list, the more we see several things. First, women seem to have bored of serial killing as time has gone on, and second, if a woman is a nurse or part of a medical environment, buyer beware! Jane Toppan was no exception. She is famous for casually experiment on her own patients for her own enjoyment. Now, take that sentence seriously, because this next statement might gross you out. She later told authorities that she felt sexual pleasure in watching her victims die. After killing close friends, her landlord, and her sister, time finally caught up with Toppan and she was sent to Taunton Insane Hospital, where she likely Taunted the world for being foolish enough to send her to a place that would give her another 30 years of life.

5. Bertha Gifford

The ‘Textbook’ Case - Falling in line with the majority of serial killers both male and female—Gifford fits the typical profile of, ‘Oh, she was nice and gentle’. Her murderous rampage is a complete surprise’. Gifford was a quiet and unassuming person who apparently was feeding arsenic to patients. No wonder American folklore is drenched in the blood of terrifying hospitals, insane asylums and medical wards. It seems like one in three had a vicious murderer traipsing around in it. Gifford’s body count made it to almost 20 before she was caught.

4. Dorothea Puente

And the modern era of female serial killers. If you’re in the shipping industry, it’s usually a bit taboo to open packages. Well, in 1985, a handyman failed to open a box given to him by Dorothea Puente to dump—and it was a good thing he didn’t open it, as it contained a decomposing human body. Luckily, fisherman found the body days later and reported it to police. After searches began to plague her premises, Puente suffered a devastating blow when police found seven dead bodies buried under her boarding house—where she had been doing most of her killing. She died in 2011.

3. Nannie Doss

Wait a minute. There’s a female serial killer with eleven bodies to her name and her first name is the word we use to describe a profession that takes care of children? Wow. Who okay’d that one? Nannie Doss married at sixteen, and then murdered two of that marriages four children. Unlike virtually every other husband on this list, that guy ran, but the Doss wasn’t done. Doss used this marriage to murder her grandchildren for insurance money. As if she were pissed about the first one getting away, husbands two, three, four, and five were all murdered. Wuornos claimed self-defense in the face of rape for years—all while she openly plead guilty to the actual murders. With seven counts under her belt, she was sentenced to death in 2002 by lethal injection.

10. The Iceman
An ice man was discovered in the Alps in 1991 and it was estimated to be over 5,000 years old. But, after his discovery, seven of the people who found him died over the course of thirteen years and not by natural causes. For instance, one person died in a car accident, another was killed in an avalanche, another died from accidentally falling off a cliff and another from a blood disorder. The Iceman curse is currently one of the most famous curses of modern times.

9. The Crying Boy Painting
This painting of a young boy was set on the walls of multiple homes throughout Europe. But, many of the homes the painting was placed in became the victims of fires and explosions. Even though the homes would be burned down to the ground, The Crying Boy painting was always found to be completely intact in the aftermath. But, what's really bizarre about this "supposed curse" is the fact that the painter of the painting from Madrid said that he had made the painting of a wondering orphan whose parents have died in a house fire.

Even a priest had warned the painter that the each home the boy was led into was destroyed due to a fire at one time or another, the painter did not believe him and took the boy into his studio to paint him. This curses phone number has been the number of many people throughout the 2000's up until now. But every single person who had the number has died. The Blarney Stone in Ireland is notable throughout the world not because it is a curse, but on the contrary because it is a piece of good luck. Kissing the stone means that good luck will come to your life. But, it does not apply if any part of the stone is removed or stolen. In fact, if that becomes the case, bad luck with ensure. People who have stolen a small piece of the stone have reported suffering from depression and bad financial conditions among other things. 1. Tecumseh's curse
This curse was bestowed upon every american president in the White House. Elected every 20 years from William Henry Harrison up until John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The curse originated when William Henry Harrison, governor of Indiana Territory in 1811 broke a treaty with chief Tecumseh. This led to a war between the US and the Shawnee in which many of Tecumseh's men were killed and Harrison's reputation continued to grow. Finally, Tecumseh cursed Harrison to death when he was elected to the White House, in addition to every president elected after Harrison every 20 years.

Sure enough, every president elected each twenty years died while in office. Harrison in 1840, Lincoln in 1860, Garfield in 1880, McKinley in 1900, Harding in 1920, Roosevelt in 1940, and JFK in 1960. President Reagan who was elected in 1980 was the victim of an assassination attempt, but survived. Supposedly breaking the curse as George W Bush, who was elected in 2000 and survived as well.
