Top 10 Scary Ouija Board Urban Legends

10. The whole town went insane
In the 1920’s the population of a small town in Southern California went insane after they fiddled around with an Ouija board. It all began when the police arrested seven people after they stripped nude and began to act completely insane and unstable. Over the course of the next few days, the insanity spread like wildfire throughout the town. The police officers were even found stripping down naked and running into stores and banks while yelling hysterically. The town hall officials were terrified that this insanity would spread to other nearby towns so they brought in a ton of mental health specialists to examine all of the people who went insane. Even though they weren’t able to come to a conclusion, the government didn’t want to take any risks so they banned Ouija boards within their town limits.

9. Never play the Ouija board in a graveyard
When you are playing with the Ouija board, you are contacting whatever spirits are around you. So logically, if you are playing with your Ouija board in a graveyard, you are taking a risk. When you are in a graveyard, you are literally surrounded by spirits. So the chances of you contacting an evil or wicked spirit increases. You also shouldn’t use Ouija boards at the scene of an accident, mass death or murder. That’s because the amount of violence that surrounds those places are more likely to attract spirits or demons who want to hurt you.

8. Figure 8 ironically
Alright, so there are a lot of ways that you can tell if your Ouija board session has gone horribly wrong. One of the major tell-tale signs is when your planchette moves through the alphabet or numbers, hit the corners or makes a figure 8. If your planchette begins to move across the board in any of these patterns, it’s probably a good time to say goodbye, bathe in holy water and go see a priest. These are all signs that your Ouija board has been taken over by an evil spirit or demon. But the worst-case scenario is if you see the planchette move in a figure 8 position because the evil spirit is letting you know that they have control of the board. If you see the figure 8, you are supposed to immediately end the session by saying goodbye and hope that the evil spirit lets you go.

7. Never burn an Ouija board
According to a popular urban legend, you are never ever supposed to burn an Ouija board no matter what. If you decide to burn an Ouija board, prepare to suffer from the consequences. Apparently, if you set an Ouija board on fire, you anger all of the spirits and ghosts who have made contact with you and then they are released from the board and into your house. A lot of people who have tried to get rid of their board by burning it have reported that when they set the board on fire, it made a loud, high pitch screaming sound that haunts them while they sleep. And another person reported that after they set their board on fire, they found one piece of the board survived and it was the word yes. So don’t try burning your board unless you are prepared to suffer.

6. Release Spirits into your home
If you manage to not get possessed by a demon after playing with the Ouija board, that doesn’t mean that you won’t have any negative consequences to deal with. You could easily release a bad spirit into your home. It is believed that Ouija boards act like portholes to other dimensions and when you open up the board, you have no idea who you will be communicating with. Some spirits might appear to be friendly, but spirits are compulsive liars and they will say or do anything to trick you. After you have a session with the board you might start to hear strange noises, things might start to move around in your home or your electronic devices might even start to work on their own. Either way, you’re going to need a lot of holy water and prayers because once a demon or bad spirit haunts your home, you will have a tough time getting rid of it.

5. You could become possessed if you play with the Ouija board
It is believed that when using an Ouija board, you are putting your life in danger because you could be messing around with spirits or demons who have the ability to possess your body and soul. There have been countless reports of people being possessed by ghosts and demons after using the Ouija board. Over in Columbia 20 students were rushed to the hospital after an Ouija board session went horribly wrong. A bunch of these students became hysterical and started to faint after they played with the Ouija board mobile app. They had a demonic look in their eyes and they were shouting “the devil is going to take me.” Doctors couldn’t find anything medically wrong with them so they have brought on a priest to help these possessed students.

4. The Planchette
According to the spooky urban legend, if you look through the planchette you will see all of the spirits that are surrounding you while you are playing with the Ouija board. Um… no thanks, I personally would rather not see all of the creepy demons lurking over my shoulder but I know people are curious and they have probably tried this. Some of the older planchettes don’t have a viewing glass so I think this urban legend became more popular when the Ouija board movies were released. Next time you are brave enough to play with the Ouija board, try looking through the planchette and let me know what you see. I’m actually really curious to know if this is only an urban legend or if its true.

3. Always dismiss the spirit
If you have ever played with an Ouija board, you know one of the major rules is to say goodbye to the spirits. If you don’t do this, very bad things can happen. According to the urban legend, if you don’t firmly say goodbye to the spirits, the portal remains open and they will be able to pass through and do whatever they want to you. Another urban legend claims that if you don’t say goodbye, the spirits will demand that you give them a sacrifice and if you don’t give them one, they will send demons after you. Coincidentally, a lot of people who have failed to close the board have reportedly gone insane and now live in mental institutions. So lesson learned, don’t ever forget to say goodbye or better yet, don’t play with the Ouija board at all.

2. The Ouija board can make you do things against your will
Apparently, if you mess around with the Ouija board and you don’t use it properly, demons or evil spirits can take control of your actions and thoughts and force you to do things that you never thought were possible. Take for example the murder of Brian Roach. He was slaughtered by his mother in law back in 2001. When the police interrogated her, she said that she was playing with an Ouija board with her two granddaughters and the board told her to kill him. Later on, she also tried to kill the youngest daughter because she thought she was being possessed. And then over in the UK, Paul Carroll drowned and dismembered the family dog and his wife and kids took a bunch of prescription pills after the Ouija board session and tried to set the house on fire.

1. ZoZo the demon
ZoZo is one of the most infamous demons that is known to cause havoc and scary paranormal activity during Ouija board sessions. No one knows the history of ZoZo, but those who were unfortunate enough to contact ZoZo have reported terrifying experiences. He is most often contacted through the Ouija board and he has the potential to do some significant physical and mental harm to the users. One of the most famous encounters with ZoZo was with a man from Oklahoma.

He first ran into this demon while he was using the Ouija board with his girlfriend. At first, ZoZo was sharing information with him about the spiritual world so this made the man addicted to the Ouija board, but over time ZoZo becomes much more sinister. The man played so often that eventually he had a nervous breakdown and he was claiming that demons were constantly following him. ZoZo even said that he would steal the spirit of his daughter. When she nearly died, the man attempted to perform an exorcism to get ZoZo away from his family. But that just pissed him off even more. So now, he runs a website that warns people about the dangers of messing around with ZoZo the demon.

Top 10 Scary South African Urban Legends

10. Pinky Pinky
This is a creature steeped in the mist of folklore - known to many South Africans as a symbol of fear, rape, and torment. Its said to be half man, half woman, its origins date back centuries in Zulu history. Its said to have risen tinted skin and eyes with shocking pink hair. It is said to prey on adolescent girls, especially ones wearing pink, both in real life and in their nightmares and in real life. People say it tries to corner a girl and then speaks to her in a musical woman's voice and asks if the girl will play or be friends with Pinky Pinky. Some parts of South African society are dismissive of all this but authorities do take reports of the creature seriously. Headmasters have even closed schools in the past to protect their pupils from the so-called -myth- … police investigations are not uncommon when reports of the Pinky Pinky come in. Perhaps real rapists are murderers have contributed to the spread of this myth, but many locals will tell you there's no smoke without fire and the pinky really is out there.

9. The Ghostly Horseman
In the Tokai Forest lies the Tokai Manor. The story goes that in the mid 1800s it was owned by a man called Petrus Eksteen. He loved wild drunken parties and for him, New Year's Eve was the greatest party of them all. One New Years Eve, Petrus challenged his son Frederick in front of all the guests. He made a bet that Frederick to ride his favourite horse up the steep steps of the manor and into the house. His son did this and all the guests cheered. As he went back down the stairs, a slave rang the bell to signal midnight. The horse got spooked and tumbled down the steps, dragging Frederick to his death. This violent end is said to have bound Fredericks soul to the house - specifically in the way that he died. In the years since then, people who have worked or visited the house report hearing strange sounds - drunken laughter or the echoing of horse hooves. Then there are some who swear they've seen a man in old-fashioned clothes, galloping along on horseback in the forest, especially on New Year's Eve or in the early hours of the morning.

8. Highway Sheila
Residents of Chatsworth will know all about this famous ghost. According to them, Sheila was a young Indian girl who was trying to flag down people to help fix her broken car by the side of the N2 highway. A group of men pulled over. They sexually assaulted her, murdered her and then left her by the roadside. Her spirit is now said to be bound to that stretch of road - full of vengeance and hate for all the living. She now does what was done to her - terrorizing or even killing innocent people on the road. One story involves a young man who picked up a hitchhiker called Sheila. The man offered to take her home and noticed the temperature in his car drop when the woman got in. He offered her his coat. He dropped her at her home nearby, at which point she wanted to return the coat.

The man insisted she keep it and said he would fetch it in the morning. When he went back to the house the following day a middle-aged woman answered the door and the man asked for Sheila. The woman was baffled and said that Sheila doesn't live in here any more - the man said he had just dropped her off the night before. The woman said that was impossible, as Sheila had died years before. She told him where her grave was as proof. He rushed to the spot and there, draped over her gravestone, was the jacket he had given to Sheila.

7. Mermaids of the Karoo
The Great Karoo is a large desert in South Africa - it doesn't rain often there. They say that in parts of the Karoo, there are 5-year-old children who have never seen rain. It didn't always use to be like this though, 250 million years ago, this whole area was sea - today you can find fossilized in the desert as evidence. This seems to tie in with a local legend - that deep below the ground, in water pools in caves, there lies a mermaid. Legend says she has lived there ever since a great flood washed her there from the sea. When the waters receded, she was trapped. In local folklore, people have seen the mermaid for generations - she lures them in by promising their hearts desires to them before sending them to a watery grave. This urban legend picked up the pace when people pointed out that the ancient San rock paintings in the direst part of Karoo depict Mermaid like creatures. Skeptics argue otherwise but still, the legend of the Karoo Mermaid has been around for a very long time - and may continue for just as long.

6. Anti-Occult Police
You've heard of normal police, traffic police, and undercover police - but have you heard of Anti-Occult Police. In the 1980s and early 90s, South Africa saw the birth of a real police squad whose role was to fight back against satanic crimes. The founder of the unit was Dr. Kobus Jonker, also known as -The Hound of God- … he said that in the 90s, he was investigating more than 250 cases a year and believed there were thousands of Satanists active in South Africa. It was their job to make sure people who practiced Wicca were doing so without harming anyone else. There were documented cases of some traditional healers harvesting organs for people, in the name of their belief or simply for money. They often believed the victim must be alive when the organs are harvested, and they will try to find the youngest most innocent victim possible. The pain and hormones released are what gives the organ its power. In 2006, the Police unit was officially dissolved - although some people in South Africa feel they simply went underground to continue a very real fight against the occult.

5. The Lightning Bird
This is a mythical creature in a number of different tribal folklore. Its said to take the form of a black and white bird which is the size of a person. It summons thunder and lightning using its wings and talons. Its also vampiric and has an insatiable appetite for blood. The Bird is usually the servant of a witch or witch doctor and attacks their enemies. Some say it manifests itself as lightning to men and a bird to women. Although people fear the Lightning Bird attacking them and sucking their blood dry - some hope to hunt it themselves. You see, the fat of the Lightning Bird is said to be a great source of fuel or an ingredient for traditional medicine. However, killing it is said to be no easy task as the Lightning Bird is immune to gunshots or stabbing, you cant poison it or drown it - it can only be killed by fire. So, if you've ever wanted to hunt down and kill a vampiric lightning bird that can suck your blood dry - now you know how.

4. Green Point Light House
Built in 1924, the red and white striped Green Point Lighthouse is the oldest working beacon in South Africa - with all that history, it may not come as a surprise to some people that the building is famously haunted. The story goes that the tower is inhabited by a one-legged spirit simply called Daddy West. There was actually a lighthouse keeper by the name of West who worked there in 1901 - some believe this adds weight to the claims.

3. The Afterlife Prison
Pieter Gysbert van Noodt was the Governor of Cape Town in the early 1700s. During his time, four soldiers tried to flee his harsh rule. They were imprisoned and when they tried to escape, they were sentenced to death. The governor refused to overturn the sentencing and also attend the hanging. The last soldier to receive his sentence cursed the governor with his dying breath. When officers went to report to the governor that the execution had gone as planned, they found him dead. He was slumped in his chair with a look of sheer terror on his face. Locals blamed the curse but some went even further with it. They believe the curse was not only to kill him - but to tie his soul to the prison forever. These days, visitors to The Castle of Good Hope have reported seeing him roam the halls. They say he seems unaware of his situation - and stares at tourists as if they are new prisoners, ready to be executed for their crimes.

2. The Spook House
This old house in Cape Town has become known over the years as the Spook House. The story goes that in the 1970s, the basement in this house was home to a cult group. They practiced their satanic rituals down here, unbeknown to the people at street level. They eventually left, worried that their rituals were attracting too much attention. Although they were gone through, their energy wasn't. Some believe one of their victims still haunts the place to this day. Over the years, a number of visitors have spotted a translucent old man walking around the inside of the house. When the disappears, they hear doors swinging and slamming even though the air is still.

1. The Ghost of Elsa Cloete
She was a young Dutch woman who lived in the age-old Hout Bay homestead that now houses the Kitima restaurant. Back in the 1800s, they say she was in love with a British soldier. Her father prohibited her from dating and so the soldier hung himself from an oak tree near the manor. The girl died soon after as well, at the time - they said it was a broken heart. Its been well over a century and a half since these deaths but people who work there swear they see the couple. The staff at the restaurant occasionally witness bizarre occurrences. Thes include pots flying off their books on kitchen walls and lights dimming inexplicably. Others have seen the ghostly figure of a woman standing at one of the windows of the manor as well as that of a young man lurking near the oak trees, staring longingly at the house. The staff believes this to be so true that they frequently leave meals out for the couple and say they have seen them dine together - enjoying what they were denied in life.

Top 10 Scary Korean Urban Legends Part 2

One of the first Urban Legends videos we did was Korean Urban Legends - in many ways, it spawned the whole series. Its let us cover a whole bunch of different countries so I thought, why don't we return to Korea and take a look at some more. Some of you say that Korea has the scariest stories by far, let's look at some more and see how many others agree and this is the Top 10 Korean Urban Legends - Part 2

10. One Two One Two
The story goes like this. One night, a Korean girl named Sun-Hi was at school. It was late and she was studying in the library with a group of other students from her class. All the lights were on, but the rest of the school was in darkness. After a while, Sun-Hi went to use the toilet. She told her friends and then headed down the dark hallway to the bathroom. A few minutes passed and then in the library, the other students began to hear a faint tapping noise.

It was quiet at first but got louder. It seemed to be coming from the window. When they looked out, there, standing in the darkness, was a pale woman. She pressed her face against the window but kept her eyes shut. One of her long, crooked fingers was tapping on the window. Then, one of the students gasped in horror - the woman wasn't closing her eyes - she didn't have any eyes at all - there were just dark holes where her eyes should have been. Then, she raised her fist and smashed the glass.

All the lights went out. In the bathroom, Sun-Hi was about to wash her hands when she was plunged into darkness. There was silence. She was too far from the classroom to hear the screams as the woman slaughtered the other students. She stepped back into the library and stopped dead in her tracks. The bodies of the other students were everywhere. Shaking with fear, her mind raced as she tried to figure out what happened. Then, she heard footsteps coming from down the hallway. Sun-Hi dropped to the ground to play dead. She heard something enter the room. It made a rustling sound as it moved.

Then, there was a whisper -One, two, one, two, one, two- … Sun-Hi kept her eyes closed and prayed. -One, two, one, two, one, two- …. She felt the presence draw nearer and heard the voice getting louder -One, two, one, two, one, two- … as it came beside her, the counting stopped. Sun-Hi remained paralyzed with fear. There was absolute silence. After several minutes of this, Sun-Hi thought the woman had gone. She slowly opened her eyes. The woman was crouching directly over her, staring into her eyes. She had one pale, bony finger pointing straight at Sun-His face. -one, two!- she said, before plucking her eyeballs out with her fingers.

9. The Cuckoo Man
This urban legend began to spread around Korea a few years ago. There were rumors in schools about a crazy man who was terrorizing students: the Cuckoo Man. They say he would lurk in alleys and dark streets, lying in wait for his next victim. One story involved a group of schoolgirls passing by. They heard a voice saying -Cuckoo, cuckoo- … when they turned around to look at him, the Cuckoo man would savagely attack them. Some say he used a baseball bat, others say his weapon of choice was an Axe.

Either way, reports of this happening became more frequent. One of them involved 20 to 30 schoolgirls walking down a street when the Cuckoo Man jumped them and start hitting them with a baseball bat, one by one. He only stopped when the police arrived, at which point he fled into the night. Some say there is one way to stop the Cuckoo Man from attacking you. If you're walking down a street and hear a strange voice behind you saying -Cuckoo, cuckoo you must also reply with -Cuckoo, cuckoo- and then for your life.

8. MP3 Kidnappings
This Urban Legend appeared around 2010 and has been spreading in some form or another ever since. People say that kidnappers in Korea have had much easier jobs ever since people started listening to music on their headphones. It was around 2010 when listening to music like this became very widespread in South Korea - and that's about when the reports of kidnapping happened. People say that kidnappers were driving around dark streets, waiting to spot someone with headphones blasting music in their ears. Then, when the innocent person is distracted, they are bundled into the back of a car and taken away.

The phenomenon began spreading across the whole country and was even talked about online. Many blogs and forums told the story of a female middle school student who was walking around one night, headphones blaring. She was kidnapped by 3 or 4 criminals who wrapped tape around her mouth and assaulted her. They then returned her to the spot where they found her. Although these may just seem like stories, it has resulted in some South Koreans developing a real superstition about listening to loud music alone - especially when walking along dark and creepy streets.

7. The Handsome Man
The story goes like this. 19-year-old Karuko lived on the 14th floor of her apartment building. One night she was coming home late from university and took the elevator up to her floor. She was alone but a moment before the doors closed, a handsome man stepped into the elevator with her. He smiled and stood quite close to her. They chatted for a while and the man said he lived on the 13th floor. When they reached that, he got out and turned to face her. His smile turned to an evil one. He tilted his head and said -I'll see you upstairs- … then, he pulled out a knife and laughed maniacally as he ran up the staircase. Before Karuko could do anything, the elevator doors closed. She tried to stop the elevator by hitting every button she could, but nothing worked. When she got to her floor, the doors opened and there he was. She was never heard from again. Some people in Korea believe this is the reason why elevators now have a stop button - and they'll be happy to tell you Karukos story to show you why.

6. The Sesame Seeds
The story goes like this. One day, a girl was worried about her skin getting old and wrinkled. She was obsessed with improving the look of her skin. At first, she used normal products but then felt she needed more than that and started to explore stranger techniques. One day, a friend of a friend told her that if you put sesame seeds in your bath, they will help your skin stay youthful and glowing. The girl had heard a lot of techniques but not this one. Perhaps this was the secret method that would satisfy her forever. She rushed home and ran a bath.

After pouring in a huge bag of sesame seeds, she jumped in the bath - where she stayed for hours. Her family told her to get out of the bathroom but the girl refused, she wanted more time for it to work. Her mother grew suspicious and kicked the door down. To her horror, she found the girl in a shocking state. Every last seed had attached itself to her pores and wrinkles and send roots down into her skin. Her daughter had a calm but crazed look in her eyes. She was trying to remove the seeds one by one with a toothpick, but all that came out was her trickling blood, splashing onto the bathroom floor.

5. The Eyeless Woman
This urban legend comes from north of Seoul. There you can find a strip of highway that connects Goyang to Paju. Its called Jayuro, and it's a road that's notorious for the heavy fog that's been blamed for a number of horrific car accidents. At least, that's what the officials say. Many locals believe there is a supernatural cause behind the accidents. Many drivers have claimed to have seen a young woman, wearing sunglasses, stood on the side of the highway at night. It's only when they get close that the drivers realize there are no sunglasses, instead, her eyes are actually gouged out and hollow. The shock of seeing her sends drivers careering off the road and to their untimely deaths.

4. The Cockroaches
This South Korean Urban legend will freak out anyone with a fear of creepy crawlies. The story goes like this, one day, a girls stomach started to hurt really bad. She didn't see any reason for this and so went straight to the hospital. The doctors took an X-ray which appeared to show what they called -foreign elements- inside her. They took some more detailed X rays and discovered that what they were actually looking at was cockroaches inside her. Somehow, a cockroaches eggs had ended up inside her where they had hatched into fully grown cockroaches. They showed no signs of wanting to leave and had to be removed through surgery. Many people now check their clothes twice for cockroach eggs, unless they want the story to come true for them too.

3. The Dead Dream
According to some people, there have been reports in Korea of dead family members appearing in peoples dreams. One such story involved that of a man who dreamt his grandmother was beckoning him over while she was waist deep in water. He wanted to go to her in the dream, after all, he missed her and it was still his Grandma, even if she was being creepy. Something didn't feel right though, he felt in danger even though it was just a dream. The next day he told his wife about the dream and her eyes widened.

His wife explained what the dream meant. She said if you go into the arms of a dead person in a dream, especially if they're in the water, it was a sure sign that your soul was going to be stolen. The husband said he kept having the same dream, night after night - but each time, he could feel himself getting pulled closer and closer to her, he was only just managing to wake up in time. Then one day, they realized that they had kept one of the possessions in the house by accident instead of leaving her to rest with it. The family believed this is what tied her spirit to the house still - after they paid their respects once more, the men dreams stopped - at least for now.

2. Fan Death
There is a well known urban legend in Korean culture that fans not only cool people down, they can also kill them. They are said to do this in a number of different ways. One way is hypothermia. A person metabolism slows down at night and becomes more sensitive to heat. Some people believe this makes them more prone to hypothermia and that essentially, a fan really can freeze your death. Then, there's is the slightly more creepy reason - Asphyxiation. Some believe that fans will suck up oxygen and blow carbon dioxide towards the sleeping person. This will slowly kill the person in their sleep. It seems that this urban legend is very prevalent. In 2006, a South Korean government group warned of asphyxiation from electric fans and said they can kill people, especially elderly patients or those with breathing problems.

1. The Cockroach Face
Yes, were returning to cockroaches now for our final story. It goes a bit like this: a guy had some bad acne on his face. He was desperate to cure it, perhaps a little too desperate. He told his friends he would do anything to get rid of the unsightly scars the spots had left on his face. They told him to go see a local shaman who apparently had a very special method for treating acne. He didn't ask any questions like I said, he would do anything for a cure. The shaman sat him down and quickly told him what to do. He told him to find a cockroach before going to bed. He would have to put it next to his pillow just before going to sleep.

Sleeping with this cockroach by his face would make his scars go away. The guy didn't ask any questions and went home right away. He found a cockroach, left it right by his pillow and tried to get to sleep. The next morning, he woke up, looked in the mirror and was amazed to see that it had worked - his scars were all gone! But then, on closer inspection, he sees that the scar holes are not gone - they are simply filled - filled with dozens of tiny, oozing, cockroach eggs.

Top 10 Scary French Urban Legends Part 2

It's time to return to France to take a look at some mre creepy stories that people have overlooked. Why? Well because France is famous for its food and culture and wine - but maybe if we keep this series going for long enough, it will be known for its terrifying tales. Let's explore the Top 10 Scary French Urban Legends Part 2.

10. The Ankour

This legend comes from Brittany in France. Perhaps the best comparison to make for this being is that of the grim reaper. The Ankour is said to resemble the grim reaper, wearing a black cloak that covers his face. He also carries a scythe that strikes fear into the hearts of all who see him. Unlike the grim reaper though, the Ankou is not tasked with killing mortals whose time has come. His job is to guard the souls of the graveyard, to collect the ones that have been lost, and to bring them to his realm. No one living has ever seen his face, for to do so would mean certain death. His eye sockets are like smoldering ashes, glowing with an eerie light.

His eyes were removed many years ago by an angel who was angry when the Ankour attempted to rip the soul from a good, untainted man. He is said to drive a black cart or hearse, pulled by two horses. Some say it is the souls he harvests that end up working for him, loading his cart with bodies so that he can remove their souls later. If you hear his knock, a death in the family will come within one year. If a person finds a red mark on their door, it is a sign of an approaching illness - this became known as the mark of Death. Perhaps the scariest aspect of the Ankour is that there is always room for one more in his cart of bodies. Some say he has never stopped harvesting souls, and he will continue to do so forever.

9. Dames Blanches

Those of you who know a little bit of French might know this translates to the White Ladies. These mythical beings have been mentioned all over France and the best description I've heard of is that they're beautiful trolls - not because they look like trolls, but because they are said to live under bridges. They wait for young men who need the cross. They love to dance and will crawl out from below the bridge to try and dance with the men. They are charming and usually, the man agrees. If he does, they will dance and then he will be allowed to pass without any problems. The men who refuse though will be thrown off the bridge to their death. Many people believed this was the key to their terror - the survivors would always tell other people about the lovely woman in white at the bride who wanted to dance with them. The ones who knew their true terror would be dead and washed down the river.

8. The Tarasque

When you think of dragons, many jump to China - but France has it's very own. The Tarasque is a fearsome, dragon-like creature that has been mentioned in Southern France for generations. In medieval times, it was said to devastate the land. Those who lived to tell the tale said it was a dragon with a lions head, six short legs like a bear, an ox-like a body covered with a turtle shell and a scaly tail that ended in a scorpions sting. They say it has teeth like swords and as big as horns. Sounds horrible right? Well, the people of Southern France certainly thought so.

Legend says the creature would hide in the river and attack passers-by after sinking their vessels. The King of Nerlux was said to have attacked one with knights and catapults, but the creature was almost impossible to kill. Saint Marth charmed the beast with hymns and prayers and led it back to the city. The terrified people attacked it as it slept and the creature did not fight back, ultimately dying right there. The townspeople felt so bad that they rename their city to Tarascon in the creatures honor - a place that you can still visit today, just keep one eye open as you sleep.

7. The Kidney Thieves

The story goes like this. A man in Paris once had too much to drink and when he stumbled into his home, he forgets to lock his door. The next morning, he woke up naked in his bathtub which was filled with ice. Next, to the tub, he found his phone and a note that read -Call an ambulance right away and don't move!- … there was also a bottle of champagne in the ice and a national health insurance reimbursement form stapled to the note. The man panicked but had no choice than to follow what the note said. He called the ambulance which took him to hospital. The doctors were shocked to find that someone had surgically removed of his kidneys. He used the form to claim back the money in medical fees and got 30,000 euros. Many people in France have spread this scary story of organ thieves who are sometimes willing to pay a fair price, but they'll always take what they want by force.

6. The Vanishing Hotel

The story goes like this, two couples were driving through France on their way to Spain. To break up the journey, they decided to stay for the night in Montelimar in France. The hotel was full and so they set out to find a new place to stay. They stumbled across a street with old-fashioned buildings and advertisements for a circus. They found a hotel with some vacancies and decided to stay there for the night. They were surprised to find the hotel had no elevators or telephones.

Every door had wooden catches on the doors rather than locks. There were bolsters instead of pillows on the ben. The plumbing was very old fashioned but seemed somehow new. Their bed sheets were made of calico, a cheap looking fabric that hasn't been used to make linen for centuries. The windows were even worse, they didn't have any glass, just shutters. Despite the strangeness of the hotel, they stayed the night. The next morning at breakfast they saw 3 people enter the hotel, a woman in a long old fashioned dress with button boots.

Then there were two French policemen wearing old uniforms. Their hotel bill was very cheap, less than 10 percent of what they were expecting. Nonetheless, they enjoyed their stay and decided to return to the hotel on their way back from Spain 2 weeks later. This time though, they couldn't find it. The cobbled road and the old-fashioned circus signs were still there but the hotel was gone. It had disappeared. When they went to develop their holiday photos, all the ones they had taken of the hotel were missing. They weren't even just blanks, the photos physically didn't exist anymore. It was like the hotel had never existed at all. Their details have been verified by a number of historians but nobody has ever been able to offer an explanation for this mysterious time slip.

5. The Matagot

In Southern France, people say the Matagot is an animal spirit. The interesting thing about this creature is that it takes the form of any animal it chooses. It is often a black cat but can also be a rat, fox, dog or cow. They are generally evil but can sometimes bring wealth into a home if it's well fed. Traditionally, a wealth bringing matagot must be lured with a fresh chicken. The new owner must then carry it home without looking back once. If the cat is given the first mouthful of food and drink at every meal, it will repay its owner with a solid gold coin each morning. However, there is a catch - nobody can keep a matagot forever. They say if the owner is dying, they will suffer a long and painful death if they do not free the Matagot.

4. The Gargouille

The story goes that this creature was a terrible sea serpent who emerge one day from the Seine river and began to spew water about the countryside. It created a giant tidal wave and whatever the waters did not kill, the dragon devoured for its meal. Its name literally means gargler for this reason. One day, the archbishop of Rouen intended to put a stop to the problem. He knew the creature lived in a cavernous lair on the banks of the Seine river, and he intended to travel there to stop it from rampaging any more. Nobody wanted to help him - they said it was suicide. Instead, he took with him two prisoners who were already condemned to death. When they got there, the beast attacked them ferociously.

However, the archbishop made the sign of the cross with his fingers and the dragon fell docile. They then bound the dragon by its neck and led it back to town. There, the people condemned it to die by fire because it had killed so many with water. The fire raged for days until an enormous pile of ash was left behind. They cast the pile into the river from where the beast has originally come from. Ever since then, the drains that divert the rainwater from the roof of the local church building have been decorated with images of the monster, as a reminder of what the people suffered through.

3. The Beast of Gevaudan

This fearsome creature is not steeped in the mists of time from thousands of years ago. It's fairly recent and well documented, which perhaps makes it even more unnerving. The beast was described as a sort of werewolf, half man, half beast, that prayed on people in the 18th century. The first report came in 1764. A young woman was tending to her livestock when the creature attacked her. It makes several attempts before being driven away by her own cattle. She testified that the creature was a large, wolf-like thing with reddish fur, small ears, a dog like head and a long tail. At the time, people thought this was just a one-off event, but they were wrong.

Just a few days later, a 14-year-old girl was killed by the beast not far from the first sight. Her body had disappeared, presumably devoured whole. Now it was serious, the villagers began to panic and the attacks got more brutal. There were several reports that peoples heads were being snapped off by the beast. The legend grew so big that even the King heard about it. No matter how many hunters he sent, the attacks kept happening. In the end, in 1767, 300 hunters finally tracked the beast down which required a silver bullet to finally be killed. Some say that they got it wrong though, that this was just a large wolf, and the beast or its offspring may still roam the hills of France.

2. Les Lavandieres

This French urban legend has been spoken of in Northern France for centuries. The name translates to the Midnight Washerwomen. They are said to be 3 old laundresses in Celtic mythology. The old women go to the water's edge at midnight to wash the clothes of those who are about to die. Those who saw them say they were smalled, dressed all in green and had webbed feet. This also led to them being called the Night Ducks. They are a terrifying omen of death to all who have seen them. It can mean a death in the family or the death of the person that sees them. Despite their appearance, the Washerwomen are said to be agile and strong - almost supernaturally so. In other Celtic cultures, if you can get between the women and the water, they will ask you 3 questions which you must answer honestly if you do, you will be given 3 wishes. However, due to their ominous relationship with death, many people will turn and run and the first sight of them.

1. Feu Follet

You may have heard this called by other names in English such as the will o the wisp or the Jack o lantern. Its some sort of atmospheric ghost light which appears in shades of a faint blue glow. Other times it can be yellow, red or green in appearance. It appears suspended in the air, sometimes flickering and often appears just briefly at night above cemeteries, swamps or bogs. Aside from its ghostly light, feu follet are generally harmless. However, beware, as these wisps are said to be spirits of the dead or supernatural beings. If you try and follow them, they will lead you to your death, and perhaps you too will become a wisp.
