5 Most Mysterious Sounds Ever Recorded
5. UVB-76 Numbers Station
UVB-76 is a mysterious shortwave radio station that broadcasts on the frequency 4625 kHz. Also knows as The Buzzer, it broadcasts a short monotonous buzz tone that repeats 25 times per minute, 24 hours per day. The buzzing is occasionally interrupted by cryptic voice messages in Russian and conversations can sometimes be heard in the background, meaning that the buzzing is generated by a device place behind an open microphone. Theorized to be a spy station or dead man’s switch, the true purpose of the station has never been confirmed, though it may act as a channel marker keeping the frequency unoccupied until it is needed to relay coded messages from the Russian military.
4. The Bloop
The sound was powerful enough to be detected by listening stations more than 5,000 km apart. In 1997, undersea microphones operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration detected an unusual ultra-low-frequency sound. The source of the sound was triangulated to a remote point in the south Pacific Ocean west of the southern tip of South America. While the audio profile of the sound resembled that of a living creature, it was several times louder than the loudest recorded animal. This has lead some to speculate that the sound belongs to a massive undiscovered creature, though recent analysis points to an i cequake as the source.
3. The Hum
Mysterious, low-frequency hums heard all around the world have baffled scientists and driven residents crazy for decades. Now striking a disparate set of locations, widespread reports of the sound first appeared in Bristol, England in the 1970s. studies have shown the hum to often occur at a frequency between 40 and 80 hertz around the world and only about 2 percent of the people in a given area can hear the sound. There are many theories as to the cause of the hums, ranging from mass hysteria to low frequency military communications or even noise caused by mating fish but a true cause has yet to be discovered despite real danger – 3 suicides have been linked to the maddening hum in the UK.
2. Mystery Booms
Unexplained “booming” sounds have been a source of mystery throughout history. Also known as “mi stpouffers,” they are commonly described as sounding like cannon fire. Particularly common in waterfront areas, these sounds have been heard from the banks of the river Ganges in India to waterfronts in Japan and the U.S. Common explanations range from meteorites to earthquakes to sonic booms from top secret aircraft. Natural phenomena might be the most likely source of the booms as they have been heard since the early 1800s.
1. 52 Hertz Whale
Often described as the world’s loneliest whale, the 52-hertz whale calls out at a frequency of 52 hertz, a much higher frequency than the vocalizations of most other whales. Scientists are certain that the sonic signature is that of a whale, but the exact species remains a mystery. While the whale’s movement patterns match no known species, certain characteristics have lead to speculation that it may be a blue whale hybrid. First detected in 1989, the solitary whale continues to be heard every year and remains the only one of its kind.
