The border crossers
The popularity of beers from Mexico and Central America is growing, so we decided to put 16 budget-friendly lagers into a tournament-style blind taste-off, said Jim Vorel in PasteMagazine.com. The big names—Corona, Modelo, and Dos Equis—were all knocked out early, and when super-smooth Victoria fell to the eventual winner, these were our toast-worthy Final Four:
Imperial
In Costa Rica’s top finisher, “crisp, crackery malt blends nicely with some subtle hop notes.”
Pacifico
Mexico’s Pacii co is “the portrait of neutrality,” a crisp lager whose only flaw is a slight lack of character.
Bohemia
The taste-off’s runner-up, also from Mexico, “never lacks for character”: It “checks both malt and hop boxes simultaneously.”
Famosa
Our surprise winner, from Guatemala, is “shockingly tasty” characterized by the greeny, spicy hop flavor of a Czech pilsner.
