Daylily Hemerocallis Species and Hybrids
Daylily is one of the easiest tuberous plants to grow and has hundreds of cultivars with flowers ranging in colour from the original yellows and oranges, through to red, burgundy, pink, mauve and white. Plant new bulbs 10cm deep into compost-rich soil with good drainage. Water regularly until the clump is well established when they will be quite drought tolerant. Divide clumps in autumn if they become too big or dense. The flowers last for one day only (hence the name) but each clump produces many flowers so the display is long-lasting. The added bonus of these flowers is that they are edible. I have quite a few growing in my garden and find the yellows have the best flavour: sweet and crunchy.
