10 Unexpected Things That Could Cause World War 3

10. An Accident
Imagine a full scale global war all caused by… mistake. Well this is what a think tank, erm, thinks, anyway. According to the Express, a 2018 report by the Eurasia Group looked at the biggest threats facing the world. It highlighted North Korea as ‘the world’s most obvious risk of a geopolitical accident’. It was a claim based on the missile tests undertaken by the state and that, in addition to the pre-existing elevated tensions, if something goes wrong when conducting these tests, even by accident, it’s likely to ignite a conflagration.

While the report concluded that the possibility of war caused by accident in this way remains unlikely, it’s nevertheless possible. Back in 1980 World War 3 almost DID actually happen by mistake for a similar reason. That year the US warning center detected an incoming nuclear strike. As such, counter mobilisation got well underway - Air Force bomber crews got ready for take-off and the National Emergency Airborne Command Post taxied into position for a rapid takeoff. Luckily, though, just a few minutes later, officials realised it was a false alarm likely to have been caused by a computer glitch, making it a very close call indeed.

9. Revenge
Yep. It seems even world leaders can be pretty petty when it comes to conflict. In 2018, Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military officer and double agent for the UK’s intelligence services, and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in Salisbury in England with a Novichok nerve agent.

Following the incident, the Express reported that the UK’s intelligence agency had warned that Britain and its allies would take REVENGE on Putin’s regime for the attack after it came out that Russian spies were believed to be behind the attack. What exactly this revenge will entail, who knows, but, needless to say, launching a revenge attack on one of the BIGGEST powers in the WORLD could certainly lead to a full global scale conflict.

And Russia are no better themselves. In 2018 the superpower vowed REVENGE against America. Russia’s Ambassador Anatoly Antonov warned Donald Trump that there ‘will be consequences’ for the US-led military strikes on Syria. The Ambassador tweeted that ‘A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences. All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris’. Very worrying indeed.

8. Artificial Intelligence
They’re making jobs, they’re TAKING our jobs and now they’re causing war. OK so maybe the last one isn’t happening right now but it certainly could in the future. Over 70% of the US fears that robots are taking over our lives, one of whom is Elon Musk. Aside from tweeting back in 2017 that artificial intelligence poses ‘vastly more risk than North Korea’, he also took to the social platform to affirm that competition to AI superiority at national level most will most likely be the cause of WW3. And he’s certainly not alone in thinking these automotive beings will cause the next global conflict.

One of Asia’s richest men, Jack Ma, claims the First World War was the result of the first technology revolution, with the invention of airplanes and chemical warfare, the Second World War was the result of the second revolution and, you guessed it, that the Third World War will be the result of the third technology revolution. Ma believes the spate of technological advances could cause a new global conflict between major powers looking to assert their dominance.

7. Brexit
You may think that Brexit only has ECONOMIC impacts, but the POLITICAL impacts of this decision are ALSO something to worry about. Back in 2016 when the UK was deciding whether or not to leave the European Union, the then-Prime Minister David Cameron warned that Brexit could trigger World War 3. In a speech to voters, Cameron argued that the European Union has helped to anchor peace and stability across the European continent by binding member countries together, helping reconcile countries which were once at each others’ throats for decades.

But speculating over the possibility of the UK leaving the EU, Cameron said that to leave would be a sign of Europe’s decaying solidarity. The Prime Minister reminded voters that leaving the EU would allow for the possibility of tension between now-friendly neighbouring EU countries, as we have seen before in the previous two world wars where Britain went head to head against neighbouring France and Germany. Now that the UK HAS decided to leave the EU, however, only time will tell if the Prime Minister was right to worry.

6. Water
We may not all be directly affected by it but the world is in the midst of a water crisis. Why? Well alongside climate change, it’s MAINLY because of overuse from human consumption. Over the course of the 20th century, world water use grew TWICE as fast as world population. With an exponentially growing population and increased demands from agriculture and industry, researchers estimate that this water crisis is only likely to get worse. So bad in fact, it could lead to another World War.

That’s what environmentalist, Rajendra Singh thinks, anyway. He bases his claim on the relationship between terrorism and water: Where terrorism is active, there is usually a scarcity of water. Therefore the worsening water crisis could lead to more terrorism which could spark World War 3.

A prime example of this is Syria. A long time ago, the country had very good agriculture, but after Turkey built a dam, it led to water scarcity in the country. Now, of course, it’s plagued with terrorism and violence. Similarly, ISIS has been reported to have attracted much more support from water-deprived communities than from those that are better-resourced. Needless to say, heightened tensions and violence could be seen on an even larger scale if the water crisis continues.

5. Territorial Expansion
You may not necessarily think of territorial expansion as a MODERN reason for war, yet the desire to occupy more land is STILL as rife in TODAY’S society just as it was in the previous two world wars. OK so WWI started because, among a variety of other reasons, Austria wanted Serbia to itself. Then there was WW2 which, in part, involved Hitler seeking territorial expansion, or ‘Lebensraum’, [lay-ben’s-row-m] as it was known, to make more space for his Aryan race.

So could history repeat itself? Could WW3 be caused by the same desire for nations’ territorial expansion? Maybe - There’s certainly no shortage of nations wishing to extend their boundaries and control a larger part of the planet. Israel wants the remaining Palestine, SEVEN countries have laid claim to parts of Antarctica and India has its eyes on Kashmir. What's more, according to The Straits Times, almost ALL Filipinos believe it’s important for the Philippines to regain control of islands occupied by China in the disputed South China Sea which China is still expanding its control in.

4. Geoengineering
As if climate change hasn’t caused enough problems for us in recent years. Well, here’s another one - that trying to resolve climate change may end up CAUSING World War 3. OK so it’s not THAT simple. It all comes down to a process called geoengineering. It’s the deliberate large-scale manipulation of an environmental process that affects the earth's climate which seeks to counteract the effects of global warming. Ideas include fertilising the oceans to stimulate the growth of algae to absorb excess carbon dioxide, blocking sunlight or spraying salt water high into the atmosphere to ‘whiten’ clouds in the Arctic region so they reflect heat back into space. So far so good, right?

But geoengineering researcher Juan Moreno-Cruz said that the threat of war never is out of the question when it comes to geoengineering. That’s because weather hacking in ONE region could have NEGATIVE impacts in ANOTHER. Therefore, if geoengineering IS going to happen, then all countries would have to be informed and agree since some areas may be more negatively affected than others. If they don’t, however, it may just result in global conflict.

3. The Bigger Picture
Could it be that World War 3 is simply just part of what has been planned all along? Could fate be its cause? Sounds strange, but bear with us. Many people have offered PREDICTIONS that World War 3 will happen. None, though, perhaps QUITE as renowned as future-caster, Nostradamus, who boasts an impressive record of making seemingly accurate predictions. For example, he foresaw the rise of Hitler. He wrote ‘From the depths of the West of Europe, a young child will be born of poor people, he who by his tongue will seduce a great troop’.

Pretty eerie right? About as eerie, in fact, as his prediction of the 9/11 attacks. He wrote: ‘Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth will cause tremors around the New City. Two great rocks will war for a long time, then Arethusa will redden a new river.’ So what about World War 3? Well in his 1555 book ‘Les Propheties’, Nostradamus tipped 2019 to be the beginning of an apocalyptic war that would last almost THREE decades. It reads: ‘Twice put up and twice cast down, the East will also weaken the West... ‘The big war will start in France and all Europe will be attacked.’ Hmm.

2. Food
Not only is the world facing a WATER crisis, we also have a massive food crisis on our hands. In fact the crisis is SO big that organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations say there won’t be enough food to feed the world’s population when it soars from the current seven billion people to NINE billion - all by just 2050.

According to the UN, we rapidly need to increase food production until then. Unfortunately for us, though, we find ourselves in a time when increasing food production is becoming more and more difficult. That’s because of severe weather events like droughts and floods, economic hardships and political unrest in underdeveloped countries.

Torreon Creekmore, of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity in the USA, noted that when crops fail and prices rise, people don't have the money to purchase food. That in turn can lead to stealing, then riots, mass migrations and social unrest. All of which are perfect conditions from a war to be born. As there is no clear consensus on how to end the food shortage, Usha Haley, a professor at West Virginia University, indeed DOES corroborate this in believing that the next world wars could be fought over this lack of food.

1. Money
The saying goes that money is the root of all evil. And if the belief that it will cause World War III is anything to go by, it certainly is just that. EU political economist, Hardy Hanappi, fears there’s a ‘frighteningly high probability’ of a devastating global conflict erupting this century because the current economic situation is one which has unnerving parallels with those before the outbreak of World War 1 and 2.

According to a paper by the economist, the era of capitalism which tied countries together and flourished after WWII is now coming to an end. It’s now feared that the rise of populism and nationalism could undo these ties between countries and plunge us into a world where competitive nations end up at each other’s throats, ultimately sparking a devastating conflict.

The academic detailed scenarios in which this conflict could arise. Firstly, he speculated a ‘truel’ between China, Russia and the US, which is likely to be a nuclear war. He also speculated that civil wars could erupt all over the world and even that the next big conflict could pit the ‘rich’ world against the ‘poor’ world."
