State Department: US citizen killed in Russian attack in Chernihiv
An American citizen is among the civilians killed by Russian fire in Chernihiv, as confirmed by the State Department. At least 53 people lost their lives.
The State Department confirmed on Thursday that an American citizen had been killed in a Russian attack in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv.
According to the Associated Press, the State Department did not immediately confirm the identity of the American, who is at least the second US citizen killed in the conflict, after the murder of journalist and director Brent Renaud last week.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said today that an American citizen was killed in Ukraine, where the Russian invasion is underway.
"I can confirm that an American citizen was killed. "I have no other details about you other than that," Blinken told reporters during a news conference.
Chernihiv police said on Facebook that there was a heavy artillery attack in the city and that an American citizen was among the civilians killed.
In Chernihiv, a city north of Kiev , at least 53 people were taken to morgues in the past 24 hours as they were killed during heavy Russian airstrikes and ground fire, the local governor told Ukrainian television on Thursday.
