The UN High Commissioner for Refugees expresses its sorrow over the shipwreck with the three dead and the dozens missing near Folegandros.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed its sorrow over the recent shipwreck near Folegandros .
The international organization states that "although the search and rescue operation of the Greek Coast Guard continues, there are fears that no other survivors will be found" and speaks perhaps "of the worst shipwreck that has taken place this year in the Aegean".
"This shipwreck is a painful reminder that people continue to take adventurous journeys in search of safety," said Adriano Silvestri, the organisation's assistant ombudsman in Greece.
"These tragic deaths can be prevented, among other things, by introducing legal and safe alternatives that would prevent people from resorting to traffickers," he added.
The UNHCR estimates that from January to the end of November 2021, more than 2,500 people lost their lives or were missing at sea trying to reach Europe.
