Russia: Seven people die after stomach tests - Two arrests
At least seven people have died after undergoing medical examinations of the stomach, in which an uncertified chemical was used. The chief doctor of the diagnostic center and the doctor in charge of the radiodiagnostic department were arrested.
At least seven people have died in Russia after undergoing medical examinations at the Counseling and Diagnostic Center No. 1 in St. Petersburg, in which an uncertified barium substance was used, the authorities announced today, Friday (4/3), which arrested two doctors of the center.
According to the Commission of Inquiry investigating the case, between December 2021 and January 2022 seven people lost their lives. The statement said that "for a long time, the center provided medical services to the world using an industrial chemical, which was not registered in the state register of medicines and did not meet the conditions of safety of life and health of consumers.
According to the Russian press, the adulterated product used is barium sulfate, a substance that patients take to be able to do x-rays of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine, according to the Athenian and Macedonian Agency.
The victims, according to testimonies published in the press, began to feel bad a few hours after the examination.
On January 28, the Commission of Inquiry announced the deaths of the first three patients, claiming that 23 people had health problems, each of varying severity, after examinations.
The Investigative Committee announced that it had arrested the chief doctor of the diagnostic center, Yevgeny Popov, on the charge of "negligent homicide", while today the responsible doctor of the radiological department was arrested.
Inspections have also begun, according to the announcement of the Investigative Committee, to the company that supplied the industrial chemical, while investigations are being carried out by those responsible.
