Austria: Four dead, one missing from an avalanche
Unusually dangerous day in the Alps due to the heavy snowfall of the previous period, followed by warmer weather conditions. Two avalanches in a few hours.
An avalanche in an area bordering Switzerland has killed four people and a fifth is missing, on an unusually dangerous day in the Alps following heavy snowfall followed by warmer weather, a spokesman for the services said on Friday (04/02).
Another avalanche earlier in the day swept across a ski slope at the popular resort of Selden, where five people have been rescued so far, said Patrick 'Ortler, overseer of the Tyrol state emergency services control center where the two avalanches occurred.
Another man who was swept away by the deadly avalanche near the town of Spice, on the border with Switzerland, suffered minor injuries and rescue helicopters from Switzerland and Austria have been deployed in the area, he added.
It is not yet clear what activity the victims of the avalanche were involved in or where they came from, Ortler said.
