Russia: Nine years in prison in Navalny for new sentence
Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny will be left out of active politics for years to come after his new conviction.
A Russian court today sentenced jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny to nine years in prison on fraud charges in a ruling that will keep President Vladimir Putin 's best-known opponent out of active politics for years to come.
Navalny, who was also found guilty of insulting the court, is already serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in a prison east of Moscow for violating terms related to allegations he says were made to thwart his political ambitions.
Navalny, who was also fined 1.2 million rubles ($ 11,535) by the court, dismissed the latest case against him, according to the APE-MPE, saying she was politically motivated, and pleaded not guilty.
