Russia: Nobel Prize-winning journalist Muratov donates medal to support Ukrainian refugees
A movement of high symbolism but also substance by Dmitry Muratov who donates the medal from the Nobel Prize for the support of the Ukrainian refugees.
Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov , one of the two Nobel Peace Prize winners in 2021, said on Tuesday he would donate his medal to an auction to raise money for Ukrainian refugees.
The newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where Muratov is the director, said in early March that it would remove material about Russia's military action in Ukraine from its website due to censorship, responding to threats of prosecution of journalists and citizens who deviate from the line.
"Novaya Gazeta and I have decided to donate the Medal of the Nobel Peace Prize 2021 to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund," reads an article published under Muratov's name. "There are already more than 10 million refugees. I call on auction houses to respond and auction off this world-famous award."
Muratov and Novaya Gazeta, a newspaper critical of the Kremlin, said five things needed to be done immediately: "Stop the fire, exchange prisoners, hand over the bodies of the dead, set up humanitarian corridors and provide aid, and to support refugees ".
Muratov, who co-received the award with Maria Resa of the Philippines, co-founder of the Rappler news website, dedicated the award last year to the memory of six newspaper journalists who were killed for their work.
