Bulgaria: Fire in a nursing home - 9 dead
Inmates at a nursing home in Rojak, Bulgaria, lost their lives when a fire broke out in the building. Many of them inhaled smoke. An investigation is underway into the incident.
Nine people were killed in a fire that broke out in a nursing home in the eastern Bulgarian village of Rogiak and some of the inmates were injured by inhaling smoke, a senior Interior Ministry official said.
According to the Athenian and Macedonian News Agency, the fire started from the wooden roof of the building, late tonight. The nursing home was home to 58 elderly people, according to Tihomir Totev, head of the local fire service.
"When the six fire trucks arrived, the roof was engulfed in flames and black smoke was coming out. "Firefighters started removing the inmates, but unfortunately some of them lost their lives," he said.
The causes of the fire are being investigated.
