A man tried to get into the Pope's jeep
A man tried to jump in the light white jeep carrying Pope Benedict XVI around St. Peter's Square
There was an uproar in the Vatican on Wednesday when a man tried to jump in the light white jeep that was carrying the Pope around St. Peter's Square. The man, who is German and has psychological problems, managed to surprise and approach the pope one meter. This is the first serious breach of security at the Vatican since Pope Benedict took office in April 2005.
According to Vatican sources, the man was unarmed and his goal was not to harm the Pope, but simply to draw attention to himself. Pope Benedict was standing in the open jeep and looking to the left of the crowd, so he did not notice the man who tried to get in the car. The episode lasted about 15 seconds. The German, after being questioned by a Vatican judge, was transferred to a psychiatric clinic in Italy.
