Italy: Euthanasia of a quadriplegic patient was approved for the first time
"I feel like they took a weight off me," said Mario, a quadriplegic patient. Euthanasia was allowed after the clear will of the patient, his irreversible condition and unbearable pain.
The Italian health system of the Marche region, with its capital in the Elbow, gave the "green light" to the "medically supported suicide" of a quadriplegic patient.
This patient, who the Italian media conventionally calls "Mario", is a former truck driver. For ten years, due to a car accident , he is quadriplegic, he has paralyzed his whole body.
The "bioethics committee" of the Italian health system was based on a decision of the country's highest court, according to which "medically supported suicide" (euthanasia) can be allowed if there is a clear will of the patient, his condition is irreversible and his pain intolerable.
"I feel as if they have taken a weight off me," Mario told relatives, according to La Repubblica.
