Three people suspected of belonging to the Basque separatist organization ETA were arrested on Thursday morning in France in the Banier-de-Bégor area of the Upper Pyrenees, according to a police source. The arrests were made by the counter-terrorism sub-directorate of the judicial police in co-operation with the local police authorities and were the result of intensive investigations.
On Tuesday, ETA announced that it was ending the ceasefire, raising concerns about possible attacks in Spain. France called the decision of the Basque separatists "bad news" and assured Madrid of its full co-operation against terrorism. On Wednesday, in response to the announcement of the lifting of the ETA ceasefire, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Tapatero called for "political unity" in the "field of the fight against terrorism".
