The fascist Metaxas sold weapons to the "anarcho-communists" and the socialist Sanchez to Erdogan!
The Spain-Turkey agreement caused irritation and obvious embarrassment to the current political potential. This is what happens when illusions prevail.
"What evil did we do in Greece to kill us with its ammunition?"
Francisco Franco, May 1938
Salos in our country from the Sanchez-Erdogan agreements and the excellent Spain - Turkey relations at all levels. Shock and embarrassment. Because everyone - and above all Europeans - feel exposed to this inevitable and expected development.
Everyone knows this but they comb their words and do not publicly express what the people for whom they are cut understand. That interest, money and profit are the fuel for all the decisions of the strong and the weak.
Top of the ridiculous and hypocritical dance, the European Union of course. On the one hand, it urges EU member states not to equip countries that threaten war with other countries, especially EU countries, and on the other hand, it extends its institutional retaliation to the public.
In other words, he admits that it is impossible to stop the sale of weapons, e.g. in Turkey, because arms sales are based on transnational agreements. Therefore "the decision to stop arms sales concerns the sovereignty of each Member State"!
This clear statement-confession by Joseph Borrell, the Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, was made shortly after the Turkish invasion of Syria.
This statement was not needed. We know this: For years now, Germany has been selling arms and support to Turkey. Italy, England, the Netherlands and Spain are doing the same. By concluding agreements or discussions in order to reach transnational agreements on weapons systems, investments and wider economic cooperation in general.
Their interest and economy are paramount. New jobs, growth and political benefits within each country. Okay, they sign - not all - and no vulgar human rights declarations in Turkey and that's it.
Socialist Sanchez's Spain in particular maintains excellent economic ties with the Erdogan regime. More than 600 Spanish companies are currently operating in Turkey, while a large Spanish bank, BVVA, which recently acquired Turkish Garanti, is providing significant assistance to its neighbor's winter economy.
Therefore, the standard condemnation statements of representatives of the local socialists (G. Papandreou, Loverdos, etc.), which target Sanchez, are laughable. Well, they do not say anything in the air about the attitude of the Union to show that their critical sword is on alert.
SYRIZA's reaction is even worse. He accuses the Mitsotakis government that "it did nothing and did not take the appropriate initiatives to overturn the decision of Madrid".
It is as if it is in the hands of Mitsotakis or Tsipras if he was prime minister to do anything on this issue. In the background, the Germans and the rest of the company smile ironically at such statements.
The Spain-Turkey agreement and multilateral cooperation also dispel the famous myth of unity and joint action of the countries of the South. When the Memoranda were imposed, the attempt to consolidate the front of the South made some sense, in order to overthrow or alleviate somewhat the dynastic memorandum restrictions.
But the allusions to political alliances with an adhesive political sign move in the realm of utopia. Ideology and humanism are tested in practice. And there they are exposed without value cover when it comes to state behavior. The financial interest is paramount. Public or private. End of story.
… The title of today's note reflects exactly this: in the Spanish Civil War, the intelligent capitalist Bodosakis earned inconspicuous sums by selling weapons to the Democrats who were fighting against Franco.
He did not care where the weapons went. That's why he later started selling ammunition to the Franco regime! Profitable cynicism does not care about borders and political signs. This is the ισμό internationalization of capital.
Metaxas openly supported Bodosakis despite some European states pressuring the dictator to put a brake on arms sales to the "anarcho-communists". But the country had a huge economic problem and Metaxas saw a lifeline in the businessman's activity.
Common but true: Regulators of the behavior of states are their diverse interests and their economy. Really harsh, cynical and icy. The rest, ostensibly institutionally, as a result of principles, namely European ones, are revealed funny and hypocritical. Rotten material for "popular consumption".
