"Door" to Erdogan: Biden excludes Turkey from digital summit on democracy
Joe Biden invited 110 countries to his digital summit for Democracy, with Turkey out of the list.
The Joe Biden invited the leaders of 110 countries to participate in the digital meeting to be organized in December for the Republic, including the main Western allies US , but also in Iraq, India and Pakistan, according to a list posted Tuesday on State Department website.
In the resounding absences, Turkey , with Biden closing the "door" to Erdogan , leaving the country out of the session. China, a key US competitor internationally, is also missing from the list, while Taiwan has been invited, which will undoubtedly anger Beijing.
In the Middle East, only Israel and Iraq have been invited to the digital summit, hosted by the US president, on December 9th and 10th. Arab countries that have traditionally had close ties with Washington - Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates - are missing from the list.
However, Joe Biden invited Brazil, ruled by the far-right, highly controversial President Zaich Bolsonaro.
In Europe, Poland will be represented, despite rising tensions with Brussels over the rule of law; Hungary has not been invited by the highly controversial Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Niger are among the invited countries.
