Intervention Tapatero for the termination of the ceasefire
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Tapatero calls for unity against terrorism, after the lifting of the ceasefire announced by ETA
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodrεςguez Tapatero has called for unity in the "fight against terrorism", following the lifting of the ceasefire announced by the ETA on Tuesday.
The Socialist Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Luis Rodrεςguez Tapatero, speaking in the Senate on Wednesday on the first day of the ETA ceasefire, formally called for "political unity" in the "field" of the "fight against terrorism".
"The unity of the democratic forces is an essential value" in the "field" of the anti-terrorist struggle, "he told the Senate, referring to a topical parliamentary question. " I will use the same vigor and determination to address the EDF threats, which I, after all, sought in pursuit of peace, " Tapatero said.
For his part, opposition leader Mariano Rajoy highlighted the Basque issue as a key opposition issue to the socialist government, urging the prime minister to "clarify" to avoid "misinterpretations" following the ceasefire.
De Juana in prison again
Meanwhile, ETA executive Inaki de Juana was again jailed on Wednesday in what analysts say was a "hardening" of the government's stance on ETA as soon as the group called off the ceasefire. De Juana, head of the "Madrid Commando", has been sentenced to death for 25 people in the 1980s. He was released after a hunger strike to avoid becoming a Basque hero. A recent photo of him with his girlfriend, published by right-wing newspapers, upset their audience. In recent months, a massive demonstration has taken place in the Spanish capital to keep de Juana in prison.
